I once rode the train from Ottawa to Edmonton; it took three days of around the clock travel. Travel between Alaska & the Lower 48 is by the Inside Passage in British Columbia. That allows ships to miss the stormy weather on the open Pacific, driving shipping onto a lee shore. That coast was known as the Graveyard of the Pacific. The Canadian Pacific Railway played a large part in the development of Canada. They built a transcontinental railway with a string of Grand Railway Hotels, hired Swiss people to introduce mountaineering and skiing to Canadians to make Banff National Park a big tourist destination, and established two fleets of ocean crossing passenger ships, so travelling between Australia or Hong Kong & the UK by ship & railway meant not having to sail around the dire Cape Horn. In its' heyday it would have been the worlds' largest transport network.

Being from Newfoundland and living in Ontario, my TCH travel has been from Ontario to Nfld , many times. I never tire of the beauty I see on my travels. Thats only the eastern half. I've never ventured west but I can only imagine the beauty. Maybe some day. Just a tidbit, back when TCH was done in Nfld it was just 2 lanes and the pavement was red. Most of the gravel pits were red rock and stone and when crushed for pavement iy came out red. Nowadays some of the highway is 4 lane and the newer areas are blacktop. I was surprised when I traveled to Ontario back in 72 to see black ashphalt highways ... :)

Yonge Street. In 1956, when I was 6 years old my father was transferred from Toronto to Red Deer, Alberta. I do not remember many fine details but he loaded up the wife and four of us kids in the car and off we went. But most of our journey was in the US. We crossed at Detroit and somewhere around The Dakotas returned north to Canada. I distinctly remember we took a rickety ferry across one river, passing through Moose Jaw (who can ever forget that name?) and also crossing through the Alberta badlands. Yea, before the Trans Canada, it was really rough and hard to drive across Canada. I experienced Canadian highways as a child before the completion of the highway, and it was a rough long trip.
@wjdietrich
@wjdietrich 2 ай бұрын
Yonge Street. The cost and difficulty of building the western part of the Trans Canada Highway was due to the terrain ( the Rocky Mountains) more than being "untouched", as most of Canada is(still). The Trans Canada crosses East/West not up into the North - there are very few roads, let alone highways, that go up into the northern 2/3rds (Arctic) parts(Territories) of Canada and much of it can only be reached by plane. Roads in these areas are mostly for the mining industries, have few inhabitants - so the cost is prohibitive. Canada's northern infrastructure and populations are limited more due to the terrain/geography(as is most of Canada) than the extreme weather - lots of forests,lakes,rivers,bogs - making it practically uninhabitable for humans. The Alaska Highway is NOT a part of the Trans Canada Highway, but was built/funded by the USA at their request, I believe, and then later compensated for by Canada.

Hey Aussie Tash, We drive on the right side of the road! Not the LEFT!! lol , we didn't copy the brits!
@juliansmith4295
@juliansmith4295 2 ай бұрын
Actually, we did "copy" the Brits, like every other commonwealth country. We only switched to driving on the right because the Yanks told us to in the 30's, and as always, we just did what we were told.
@terryomalley1974
@terryomalley1974 2 ай бұрын
@@juliansmith4295 That's not really accurate. The reason Canada switched to driving on the right was two-fold: until the 1970's, virtually all autos sold and driven in Canada were from the "Big 3" automakers in Detroit, Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Those companies weren't going to pay the added expense of an extra assembly line to build left-side steering for the Canadian market, which only 9% of the total North American market. Secondly, for trade and travel reasons, the Canadian highway system was set up to be interoperable with the US interstate system. It would have been highly confusing and awkward to have to switch to driving on the opposite side of the road just because you crossed the border.

I'm in Northwestern Ontario, west of Thunder Bay. I remember my father telling me about a trip to Winnipeg with my grandfather in the early 1950s. They had to go down into the United States and come back up into Manitoba (around Lake of the Woods). The Trans Canada was supposed to go through that area, but the crossing at the Ontario/Manitoba border was a nightmare.

Hey Tash, When they built the Trans Canada Highway, it was not a single road built from coast to coast. Sometimes it was a matter of upgrading and linking up existing regional networks. But it was a huge undertaking just the same. In Ontario, there are actually two routes. The one northern route is Highway 11, which actually starts as Yonge Street in Toronto and goes north and west 1,900 km to Thunder Bay. There is also a southern "Georgian Bay Route" that services the Great Lakes communities. I am going to post some pictures for you in the Today's Video Discussion section on Discord.

My dream was to see whales and we saw a big group of Orcas they were giving us a show. What beauties just amazing. There not a place in Canada I don’t feel at home. We’re heading to St-Johns in 4 days. We stay at least 3 months in a province.When. We leave the province we made friends and we know our Canada. I just love my country.

Left hand side of road was in BC and the eastern maritime Provinces of PEI, NB and NS until about 1923 or so. The Pan-American Highway (American meaning North American and South American) runs from Ushuala on the southern tip of South America to Prudoe Bay (on the Arctic Ocean) in Alaska. It includes the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek BC Canada to Fairbanks Alaska. When I was doing a job in near Inuvik, Northwest Territories we drove 150 km north to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. We ran into two men from Argentina on bicycles who did the Pan-Am Highway. They took a side trip to “ Tuk ” as the locals say. Later they were heading south to Dawson City (of Klondike Gold Rush fame) and then on to Prudoe Bay. They saw on the map they were going to go through Chicken, Alaska (near the Yukon border) and thought they might do a 150km (300km round trip) diversion North to Eagle and were wondering if I’d been to Eagle. Unfortunately I had only been to Chicken! After that they were heading to china by plane. They wanted to go to Russia but said they are “ crazy government” but China (Beijing) nice and very happy they come! The only other break before that was the the Darien Gap in Panama because it is roadless swamp, tangled trees, steep mountains and dense rainforest that no one has tasked yet. No doubt the fact that next door Columbia is a corrupt and violent country steeped in drug lords and general poverty 😢 ( so sad) has something to do with that.

Before it was the transcanada it was the Indigenous peoples trading trail, called the grease trail because we Westcoast native people took our ooligan grease to trade with our Eastern brother's and sisters. Also highway 16 is also a trade trail. You can still find trading trails here in British Columbia. This was taught to me by my foster dad and other WWII vets that I grew up under. The Maritimes of course is most interesting scenically and historically and Quebec is amazing - probably my fav part.

WRONG we drive on the right in both meanings of the work the right-hand side and the correct side of the road. but fun fact we used to drive on the left side may 1st 1924 the last of the provinces at the time concerted to driving on the right. newfoundland didn't start until 1947 but that was only 2 years before they became part of Canada. and wrong again a few people have walked that 7,000km terry fox tried it passed in ontartio a guy tried it last year blew out his knee in New Brunswick currently ryan keeping is doing it he's made it all the way from saint johns and is currently in Saskatchewan but he took a longer route to take his charity run through bigger cities like toronto he's doing 75km a day. there's a portion that cus through the CFB gagetown the military base in NB that was also federal land the military still needed to cross so they built over passes but let it drow over to also allow wild life to cross. that same section has fences down each side with one way gates off the highway for wild life too get off the highway yes hamilton is in Ontario the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) runs from Toronto to Fort Erie through niagera falls. the funny thing about that clip at 13:15 is that's in Toronto well Etobicoke highway 27 is now highway 427 so if you go to google earth find the qew find the 427 interchange and that's where that clip was taken
