I came across a classic red-back spider the other day in my kitchen!
I just had to look at it under a microscope -
I was mesmerized by it's golden fangs...
Creepy, but cool.

They don't actively hunt you. Being afraid of spiders is so irrational. The VAST majority of spiders are non-aggressive, with the only species being documented to actually chase people are Sydney Funnel Web spiders. There are also very few medically significant spiders. There is absolutely no reason for you to kill them, like he said. Just because you're scared doesn't mean they're scary.

Aussie Redback. They're a black widow, but they're more potent venom than USA BW variants. US South Eastern Black Widow is most toxic in USA, but Aussie Redback puts USA SE BW Venom to shame.

Both the Black Widow of the Americas and the Australian Red Back spider are in the Lactrodectus genus but they are not the same spider. There are several widow species in the Lactrodectus genus like the Black Widow, Brown Widow, Red Widow, White Widow, Red Back etc. I believe there are somewhere around 32 species total and probably more that haven’t been discovered or classified yet.

Is it these in particular or just a widow spider in general? Because Red Backed Spiders, also known as the Australian Black Widow, are found natively in Australia, Southeast Asia and New Zealand but humans do be spreading animals everywhere.

@@13lilsykos Despite their similarities, they are actually two different distinct spiders; and I am sure that they're assuming the black widow is the same spider as the redback, and it is highly unlikely that the redback spider has made its home in Nevada.

When I was young I captured a white tail spider and trapped it in a specimen jar that was fully glass and has holes in it for breathing air. I even had it in my room at night. At first it tried to get out but after a while it just chilled. I even added some sand for a floor and insects for it to eat but it didn't seem interested, which makes sense now but obviously again I was very young then. My mother ended up killing it while I wasn't home, I was disappointed.

@@icyflow1876 its a black widow and a cousin of the American black widow from what I’ve read. there are a total of 34 different species of black widows which can be found throughout the world. Only two of these can be found in Australia, and both of these are easily identifiable; the Redback spider and the Brown Widow.

Black widows and Redbacks are pretty much identical in shape. Both species have a red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen. The Redback, however, has an additional red stripe on its back.

This is not a black widow, because it has its red pattern on the top of its abdomen. Black widows have it on the bottom of theirs. (This was for any of you confused)

To everyone saying it's a black widow, no, it's not. Red back spiders have a vertical red stripe on the top of their abdomen. Black widows have the signature red hourglass below their abdomen. Those are two different species.

redbacks have both a red stripe on their back and an hourglass underneath their abdomen. black widows only have the hourglass underneath. they're different species but are in the same genus latrodectus.

to be fair though, every spider or insect-sized creature will be terrified of you. if this spider bites you, its because it feels stressed. spiders are usually curious, and it would likely just walk along and explore you. just dont make sudden movements, or stress it out. of course, id rather not risk having a very venomous spider crawling on me, but the chance that they bite you is similar to most other spiders

Bites CAN be fatal, not simply are. There hasn't been a spider death in a long time because of anti venom and better treatments. You mainly just get very sick and feel like complete shit for a while, but that's about it. It's usually only fatal if you have an allergic reaction to the venom as well.

I used to work and live in Australia for a year and had huge respect for nature there. One day when I was working (as a car mechanic) we shook the back of the car to troubleshoot when my colleague screamed "watch out mate!" And there it was, about 5 cm from my neck hanging in it´s web. Safe to say that that spider did not get to just "run away"
