Hershey insisted on using fresh milk as opposed to powdered milk like European chocolatiers. As a result the milk slightly spoiled during the chocolate melting process. After new food safety regulations they could no longer use that method so they had to find something that gave it the same flavor without the risk of people getting sick so they had to start adding butyric acid to their chocolate. Contrary to popular belief, not ALL American chocolate tastes like that. There are thousands of chocolatiers in the U.S. and only Hersheys puts butyric acid in their chocolate.

A lot of people outside North America think Hershey's (and other American chocolates that try to mimic Hershey's) tastes like vomit. There's an actual ingredient/chemical reason for that, that I won't go into specific detail about unless anyone wants to know, but in short, it's because the US is so big that before fast commercial air transport, the recipe had to be tailored for longer shelf life to have time to distribute it across the country. The different recipe has a slightly more sour flavor, so if you didn't grow up associating that flavor with chocolate like we Americans do, the sourness can taste like vomit instead. If you eat enough American chocolate, though, you'll get used to the flavor and start associating it with chocolate, too, and that should allow you to focus more on the other ingredients' flavors and get a better sense of the overall taste of it.
