After this match Becker became No1 in the world. Way too late I would say.

Agreed. Plus this is where he also started loosing it. Became number 1 and it was end of road for him. He runs outside after winning they found him sitting outside on a bench. They had to drag him inside for ceremony. A good man, extremely talented but needed mental help. In the end, bad marriages, but financial decisions and then jail. My favorite player, wish people around him had taken better care of him. All the best for him now. Hopefully he uses therapy and good financial advice.

...i think he was on his peak in '89 and '90! He made Wimbledon (for the 3.rd time already) AND also won the US Open (also against the boring Lendl)! And also in '90 he take 5 titles (but no GS)! (...in '88 he won 7 titles...) ... Anyway - he will be always the BEST german player EVER! There will be never no other in germany (also not this stupid Zverev - maybe HE will never take 1) who can win 6 Major Titles...
@tobiastorres-ly7lb Жыл бұрын
@@tommytk72 His decline of sorts imho started after the wimbledon final of 1991. And this decline was largely limited to Grandslams (1992 - 94), because he was still a top ten player 1992 - 96 and won a lot of tournaments. On Carpet he was still a great player who could and would beat the very best. Then late in his career he had a run of three good GS events 1995/96 that led to his 7th Wimbledon final and his 6th GS title. Between 1992-94 he was in a GS draught, he didnt reach any finals. I believe it was mental (loss of focus) after having reached the No 1 spot in 1991. It also bore 2 names: Agassi and Sampras, these two hold a combined 7-1 edge in Slam matches over Becker, denying him many titles and/or runenr ups at various GS events. (1990 US Open SF, 1991 FO SF, 1992 Wimbl QF, 1993 Wimbledon SF, 1995 Wimbledon Final, 1995 US Open SF). His peak year imho was 1989, a shame he didn't finish No 1 that year as Lendl held on to the top spot by winning a series of minor events. But the ATP acknowleded Becker and named him player of that year at least.

I think the decline starts After Wimbledon 91 with a very frustrating final defeat against Stich. 92 and 93 were his weakest years especially ad the GS. He has mentally and privat issues. In late 94 he slowly regained motivation and Fitness and peaked in 96 with his win of the AO. That time Agassi an Sampras weren‘t in best condition. So Becker had a great chance to win Wimbledon 96, but sadly he got injured with his hand. Showing great Indoor Matches with Sampras in late 96 he had a strong believe to become no 1 again in 97… But he lost first round against next gen player Moya. He lost all his Motivation and had no Chance against Sampras at Wimbledon 97. Overall best and typical Becker was in 89 and peaked again 96 but in a more powerfull way.

Lendl was your classic bully on thecourt, and he admitted as much on many occassions, deliberately hitting opponents who came to the net as hard as he could, all in an attempt to intimidate his opponent. With Becker, he was up against a player who was bigger physically than him and could hit the ball as hard if not harder. Becker, however, was mentally stronger than Lendl. In Grand Slam meetings, he owned Lendl
@ForGoodnessSake3G Жыл бұрын
The grand slam head to head between Lendl and Becker is majorly impacted by the fact Becker never faced Lendl at the French, mainly as he only once progressed to the business end and never reached a final. Clearly Lendl was a far better clay court player, one of the greatest ever as his multiple tournament wins testify. As for the 5-1 head to head, 3 were at Wimbledon where 2 of those were incredibly close and one of tbose was only won by Becker thanks to the rain delay. At the US Open it's 1 each and at the Oz another tight match that Becker won. None of that amounts to owning another player at a slam. It amounts to squeaking past and avoiding meeting on GS clay, a surface where Lendl did 'own' Becker outside the slams. Just clarifying! :-)
@FrederickJohnSebastian Жыл бұрын
@jonmortimer5831 thanks, but what did you clarify which the 5-1 record didn't already communicate? Many self-serving excuses for Lendl were offered, I'll grant you that. At Wimbledon, Becker wins routinely in straight sets in 1986, a comfortable four sets win, which just as easily could have been straight sets win in 1988, and the rain delay match you speak of in1989, a rain- delay which affected both players, yet Becker wins comfortably 6-4 and 6-3 in the fourth and fifth sets. You cite the French, and it is true, Becker was not as effective on clay, but Lendl? His win in 1984 was a fluke: McEnroe self-destructed at the crucial moment of victory in the third set . Something Lendl could appreciate as he choked against a badly cramped Michael Chang who beat him serving underhand. Lendl put forth a bully facade to cover his mental fragility in key moments. In 1982, 1983, 1984 it was not uncommon for him to mail-in the last set like he did against Connors anc McEnroe at the US Open. When he was bullying players around the court and his forehand was on, he looked imposing to be sure, but against a player who was not intimidated, like Becker, he lost. Mentally, Becker knew he could beat Lendl and Lendl knew it as well. The Aussie Open was tight? After spotting Lendl a 6-1 first set, Becker wins the next three 6-4. 5-1 Becker head to head in Grand Slams says it all.

Becker was too weak on clay to face Lendl in Roland Garros or other tournaments on clay, otherwise the statistics would have been different. He always met Lendl in his favorite surfaces...
@FrederickJohnSebastian10 ай бұрын
@diegofrancescocalvisi6935 clay was lendls favorite surface? Don't think he'd agree. Surely hard courts were his favorite? 8 US Open finals in a row, winning 3 of them. On carpet he was very happy: his high ball toss was not bothered by wind so his serve was effective. Think he made the finals at the year end championships 9 years in a row? The French Open was home to one of the greatest upsets in modern tennis history: his loss to Chang, who was cramping and served underhand. Clay blunted his power forehand and serve more than the other surfaces mentioned above. Becker played him on carpet and hard courts and beat him at the AO, USO, and Masters finals.
@diegofrancescocalvisi693510 ай бұрын
@@FrederickJohnSebastianYour message is correct, but also mine. The point is that on clay Becker was very weak (although paradoxically he was raised on this surface), whereas Lendl was very strong. Lendl won three Roland Garros (he could have won more, for sure, including the year in which he lost by Chang, and he did not play another one to prepare Wimbledon) and many tournaments on clay. To conclude, the head to head balance could have been more clear if Becker was better on clay, but he was not competitive on this surface. Exactly the same happened with Edberg.

@@danguee1 I'm well aware that I stated the obvious and it certainly wasn't my intent to knock either player. The truth is that the comment section is not for genius statements. Those are best reserved for other contexts. Besides, when it comes to tennis, I've noticed that pretty much everything has been said. The only real genius lies with the players themselves, their strategies and ability to execute. Perhaps with the coaches as well. I should add that labeling someone a "moron" on the basis of a single comment, without knowing anything about the person, is itself a moronic display. Before coming to any conclusions you need to get to know the person. Barring that, you suspend your judgments.
