At WTL, Meddy said he'd be coming to net more this season & that he had been practicing his drop shots & volleys, so there you have it. This match took forever & yet we still ended the day session with time to spare (unlike Day 10). Bravo! Let's be real, the match was always on Meddy's racket. He could sense Hubi's resistance & knew to pace himself & take the long route to victory. Since Day 1, that has been the singular differential in every 5 set match the top 10 have played. Unfortunately for Meddy, data shows no one who has survived a super late match in the earlier rounds (like the one against Emil) has gone on to win the title.

Daniil Medvedev is an extremely difficult player to face. He hits way too many unorthodox shots. So the opponents even if they guessed the short would still need to take atleast one additional step to reach the ball because of the angles.

@throwinfitz11449 ай бұрын
Medvedev started to take the match back with variety. You need variety and strategy. Being a wall or blasting the ball won't work at certain levels. You need some slices, drop shots, redirection, spin, volleys, etc. You have to give the opponent different looks. This is why the big 3 have had the careers players dream of on tour. Even Novak, who is primarily a baseliner, will throw in slices, drop shots, and approaches every game. This is why Rublev, as talented as he is, will never win a slam. Nadal was talking about how he doesn't like the play from the new talent on tour. For all players, up and coming or even club level, learn to have a complete game.

That was hard to watch. Hubi had Daniil on the ropes at the start of the 5th, and Brad Gilbert was practically begging for Hubi to make Daniil work. Unfortunately, Hubi took his foot off the gas pedal, allowing Daniil to regain his energy and confidence for the breaker. This is just a lack of IQ at a critical moment. As Hubi’s own coach says, it’s Hubi who beats Hubi. Huge missed opportunity here imo but of course credit to Daniil for fighting through the fire. He earned it.

Amazing match. Hurkacz will regret forever have hit that forehand slice instead of a decent forehand on the final match point.
@got2bjosh9 ай бұрын
To be fair, the playbook on Meddy has LONG been to use slices, drop shots, & volleys against him. Hubi used them effectively throughout the match, however, players under pressure can err in their decision making. The drop shot worked for Meddy because he read Hubi's deep court position, was well inside the court when he executed it, & he disguised it well.
