I had never watched Tien play or even heard of them until the NEX GEN finals. I was super impressed at both his game and his tennis IQ. He played an incredibly good and smart game to take out one of the best players in the world. It will be fun to see how he does the rest of this tournament.
@kiabtoomlauj624913 күн бұрын
Never saw him play nor heard of him, either. The one thing that separated him from other young --- promising but young & inexperienced players --- is, as you said, his "tennis IQ." He was either too tired to swing really hard, given the chances... or it's his laid back, calculated approach (of making the other guy miss, NOT you making unforced errors trying to hit too hard, etc) that won him the match against one of the great of his generation, the #5. I immediately compared him to the once-promising Dennis Shapovalov of Canada, also a lefty like Tien here. But Shapovalov's so hot headed, he even struck the officiating guy on the head, IN HIS CHAIR, when there's no reason for him to hit the ball randomly (after play) as he did. And during play, Dennis would just hit so hard, & jump so high... he's constantly detracted from developing a thoughtful, controlled approach to playing tennis like young 20 year-old Tien did here.... I think Shapovalov once ranked as high as #11? on the ATP tour... (between 10 & 14) before he gave up on serious development... He's once ahead of Felix AA... as the two youngsters started quickly moving up the ATP ranking...

Tien slice to disrupt Med's rhythm then hit hard. If that doesn't work he let med goes offensive then slice again. Slicing is not dead yet.
@lukasky0313 күн бұрын
Slicing has never been dead but unfortunately a lot of modern tennis players emphasized power power power and underutilize the slice as a weapon.
@razgriz1ne1ne4813 күн бұрын
Its particularly effective against Medvedev since he's not only tall hes a flat ball striker , he can generate pace off a slice without extremely high risk of error, so he has to bunt it semi softly. This is why Medvedev had wins and a number of close matches with Nadal and Djokovic but Federer beat him easy
@breachr469613 күн бұрын
@@lukasky03 Slicing is only effective against certain players. You slice like that against some of the most aggressive hitters like Carlos and Jannik and they will slaughter you.

@@rapheatup Medvedev has lost so much confidence thanx to the rise of Sinner. Medvedev used to own Sinner but now Jannik owns Daniil. Last year’s AO final sealed Daniil’s fate when he’s up and cruising to his first AO crown then Jannik roars back from an 0-2 set deficit and sweeps final 3 sets to deny Medvedev once again the AO title just as Rafa had roared back vs Daniil 2 years earlier in AO final after Medvedev was up 2 sets to love and Nadal had denied him the Championship. There’s just so much close defeat one man can take and I think the scar tissue on Medvedev’s psyche due to these losses plus the misery Novak has dissed out to him through the years has just broken Daniil down mentally, psychologically & emotionally. Don’t even want to bring up Alcaraz. At least, Daniil did get his Slam at the 2021 U.S. Open when he denied Djokovic the calendar year Grand Slam.
