Australians feel cost-of-living ‘gulf’ between themselves and Canberra

Sky News host Paul Murray says there is a “gulf” between what Australians see in Canberra every day during Question Time and what Australians “live” throughout the country.
“A lot of people come up to me on the street and they say they appreciate that we give you the data each and every night because you’ve got a busy life,” Mr Murray said.
“It’s about data and debate on this show.
“The consumer price index, which is just four per cent, however, the annual increases in your costs are 6.9 per cent, so see the gulf - well that’s you having to make up the cost.
“The cost of it keeps going up, and up, and up, and up, and up, but your wages don’t go up.”

My elderly mother in law likes mandarins. I went to Woolworths today and they were $14.99 a kilo. I live in Australia for 37 years and I never seen such prices. So sorry will be no mandarins for her for a while I suppose 😢

Lack of housing can be linked to Air B and B where owners removed their homes from the rental market due to tenancy laws in the favour of the Tenant not the owner. Labour gives a measly increase and takes it straight away with an increase of taxes fuel, alcohol, Medicare levies and so on.
@Kelly-oe8kr
@Kelly-oe8kr 11 ай бұрын
I don't think expecting a rental market to have a minimum standard is really favouring tenants, they're paying through the nose for substandard and oftentimes unsafe housing that the landlord wouldn't let their dog live in. Properties were removed from long-term rentals for short stay accommodation purely for the money. Why rent the property long term when they could make more in a single night than per week as a rental. Pure greed by the haves against the have nots.

Mining companies continue to make billions. Energy mining CEO s continue to rack in millions. Australia, such a resource rich country with so little population and so many economic immigrants. It has to do with our incompetent government and the tax system.

As prices go up .. I’m just buying less of everything … gets to a point where prices go up though everyone stops buying that effect means company’s don’t sell as much … that’s job losses where companies pull up the slack of not selling as that’s where costs are cut first .. people then losing jobs .. can not pay for anything ! It’s not a good scenario … at this point I have no answers if I don’t and I’m an investor .. then I can guarantee you no one will have the answers .. not even the reserve bank .. at the moment I see the reserve bank making loads of mistakes

Why are political donations ( bribes) still allowed? There is no need for it anymore and the gov should be working for average people instead of interest groups.

Jobkeeper boosted business profits. When jobkeeper stopped they needed to maintain profits. Businesses always need this 1/4 to be as profitable as the last 1/4. The only way to maintain profits was to increase prices.

Mass immigration by "skilled workers" which really means RICH, has driven house prices, and large number of other objects. I live in Canberra and am aware of a junior Indian doctor buying a house for $6,000,000! And our wonderful Government is still allowing 2,000 into the country every day

Interest rates are transfer of wealth from middle class to the banks and it's a lagging remedy, if super was increased 1% from wages instead the effect would be instant and the money remains with the person for use later.
@RumperTumskin

i.e. transferred to the super funds to be eaten up in fees, commissions, and margins instead of the bank? Then those same funds using the shareholder voting rights purchased with consumers' money to work against their interests?

What l find amazing ( sad really)is just prior to the 2022 election is when you started talking about cost of living/ recession. Never heard about it post 2022, when in reality it was hear from about 2018, covid delayed it but it was still here. The liberals put us into this and did nothing to get us out of it, but never once do you talk about this, why??, uncle Rupert won't let you. P.S my fuel still hasn't gone up yet salty,
