The consumer spending numbers seem way off the mark. The Australian economy is surviving on government activity, subsidies and student migration. Most students will leave by 2026, and government spending will keep increasing through 2025-26. Interest rates will remain high and any Aussie with a stable salaried job will feel the pinch in December 2024. I just met a federal government employee who is 40+, single, owns his own home - this person travelled to Melbourne for the first time in his life, and that was his top expense this holiday season. Not encouraging when someone earning Au$1,40,000 a year can’t afford decent vacations in Oz.
