There is a little issue with the Viribus Unitis sinking. This is my recall. There could be some imprecisation here and there but still: It was no a torpedo boat. The torpedo boat logged around a manned torpedo. The Manned Torpedo entered the Harbor with two saboteurs, Raffaele Rossetti (the same engineer that developed said manned torpedo) and Raffaele Paolucci, on board during the night. The two places a 200 Kg charge on the ship and were discovred and captured immediately after. This was around 4:40 AM. The sunk the manned torpedo that had another charge on board. This one later sunk a support ship when it exploded at around 6:45 AM. Now this I cant be sure that is true but the story make sense: Once under custody they discovered that the Battleship was no longer austrian as was the entire fleet. Basically the fleet was handed over when they were on their way to target so they had no way to know what was going on. So they warned the Crew of the charges and asked to abbandon ship. They said that the charges were to blow at 6:30. They didnt and the Crew of The Viribus Units resumed its stations. The Charge detonated around 15 minutes later taking the ship down with most of the crew that made it back, including the commander, Janko Vukovich. The two italian raiders managed to survive, probably due to them being better swimmer than most, and were liberated a few days later when the Italian Navy occupied Pola. The Two received a compensation of more than a Milion Lire as the law dictated. Later on they devolved part of the sum to the Family of Captain Vukovich that after the loss was in a precarious economic situation.

I have been binge watching every episode of this show just so that I could be caught up in time for the 100th Veterans’s Day. It was worth the five months of time! Thank you, Great War. You have shown me what we can do with History!

I discovered this channel in early 2016 and went back and binged all the episodes up to that point to get up to speed. That took about two months to complete. With the end near as Germany stands alone the writing is on the wall. I only hope that the channel will continue through the peace talks and well into the Treaty of Versailles so that we can understand the interwar period better. As George S. Patton said, the politicians always do things half-assed and leave us with another war to fight.

I can't recall the title, but I read a history of the Armistice which claimed American and English commanders (it hinted they may have wanted "war stories" were sending soldiers into german machine guns literally right up until 11:00am on the 11th, can you tell us more about this?
@rabihrac6 жыл бұрын
If this is true it would have been gruesome !
@colinkelly54206 жыл бұрын
Its largely an exaggeration. The Armistice was signed at 5:20am on November 11th, but the attacking Allied armies were already on the advance by 4am in most cases. Given the communication technology of the time, and the need to send physical runners to the advancing units, most Allied divisions did not get word of the armistice until hours after it was signed. The 2nd Canadian Division didn't hear about the armistice until 9:40am, over 4 hours after it was signed and a mere 2 hours and 40 minutes until it was to go into effect. The majority of units, upon receiving word of the armistice were also instructed to dig in and wait out the remaining time to 11am. Essentially, the large majority of men who died on November 11th were killed because combat operations began early in the morning (as was standard practice at the time) and word of the armistice did not reach units until hours later. While it can't be proven there were not attacks by some commanders going on right until 11am, by and large most Allied units halted and dug in when they got word of the armistice that day.

How would we remember Kaiser Wilhelm now if he had taken that suggestion, and charged into no mans land to die for Germany, as he had made so many die?

Kaiser didn't want this goddamn war either, though. So can't blame him
@SpadaccinoLuciano6 жыл бұрын
@@kestutisvaiciunas8663 You can absolutely blame him. He was the Kaiser for Pete's sake. He sent thousands to die while he sipped tea in Berlin.

And yet he didn't do anything to stop it - same as the Tsar: too much is tied up to the war that any last minute changes is outright impossible to take effect.

Tell that to Fahreddin Pasha... The absolute madman refused to surrender Medina, by appealing to his dreamy visions of the Prophet. His soldiers were finally forced to mutiny (early 1919), in order to end the hostilities. P.S. Please, make a special for the two Ottoman sultans and the Three Pashas.
