Autel Robotics X Star Starlink App & Radio

Also just learned from Matt at Autel that the "LOG" setting I'm seeing in the camera color settings is just what I suspected - a video flat file for superior professional color grading in post production. the features of this bird are astounding, and I'm still waiting to see it in the "flesh!"

Ha-ha! Like I said in my original video for the pre-production model, Autel Robotics is here to compete, not just cash in. They have put together a real, pound for pound competitor with the X-Star. The Premium is the way to go although you get most of these features in both models

Yup, I was torn between spending $200 less and losing the case and extended range, but then I figured that the extended range also would give me a more stable connection and the case for protection, instead of trying to figure out how to protect this bird...

Kevin, great news! I received my replacement X-Star Premium from Autel on Monday and took it for a spin last night shortly after sunset (still plenty of light), and started getting used to it. Captured some great video and stills. It's definitely a different beast in terms of handling from my Q500+, but that really simply gives me appreciation for the qualities of each. Also, this drone is fast as all get out! Pretty sure for a stretch that it was doing 35mph or better. Right up there with the Phantom 4 (I don't have one, BTW...) Anyway, looking forward to more vids from you on the X-Star!

Hey Kevin, I have a few novice questions. 1) If I am looking at the x star (premium or base model) vs DJI phantom 3, which would be the best choice? My ideal use are real estate videography and photography and aerial shots for other buildings. My experience is none (unless RC cars are applicable ;D ). 2) Is the 'pause' feature basically a hover feature? What I mean is does the drone hold position regardless of the wind and other elemental factors? If it is not, what would be a hover function? 3) For the Starlink app does the tablet/ phone you use have any effect on performance, i.e. if I am using a four or five year old Nexus 7 will it still work with the app or will I have to get a more modern tablet? 4) Any tips for a beginner? Could you upload a comparison of the color profiles in a future video?

Just in case anyone reads this, the Astro Tab A10 is not supported by the Starlink app as of June 2016. It would likely lag a lot even if it did, given the benchmarks I ran. I now have the Nvidia Shield K1 (2015 model) and it is more than powerful enough to provide a lag free experience.

hey mate... just a couple of Qs.... in terms of video feed distance, ( lightbridge power ) and, radio signal loss,,, how would you rate this bird?? can we rely on it when it comes to flying distances over 2kms?? video feed and radio signal??? thks

That will always depend on where you're flying. Having said that, I have flown my X-Star Premium out more than 1.8 miles and still had full signal strength for both video and radio. The X-Star has proven to be reliable for me every time I've flown it. I have no problem recommending it to anyone. For $899 (US), it's the deal of the season!

Hey Kevin; I really enjoy your videos. Very well done. Can you tell me if the X Star has no-fly-zones? And if they pevent you from flying? I live about a mile from a small municipal airport and have permission to fly. Thanks for sharing great videos.

Charlie Thanks for watching my videos Charlie and for the kind words. I appreciate them. So the X-Star does have no fly zones programmed into the Starlink app. It does not prevent you from flying but it does limit your elevation to 250 feet. This feature had been tested near large international airports and I have seen it work as I just described. I'm sure I don't need to remind you that you need to make the airport aware of your flights beforehand. It's been my experience that the municipal airport managers are happy to hear from you. I always make sure that I'm aware of the takeoff and approach directions for these locations and try to avoid any flights in those areas to avoid any issues. When you contact the airport, be sure to tell them when your flight will occur, maximum elevation you plan to fly as well as maximum distance you plan to operate. Be sure they have your mobile phone number in case something changes and an unplanned flight of a manned aircraft occurs. It's all about safety for you and users of the airport facilities. Thanks for the fast reply Kevin. I had a fly-away with my Chroma. Unrecoverable over the ocean. :-( I think the X Star would be a good choice for what I need. I have spoken with the manager several times. He contacted me once to get some vids of an osprey nest on the property of the airport. So I am quite comfortable working with him. He said not to bother calling everytime time I go up. He has no problems with drones. Just make sure to get permission the first time, and then go from there. He has seen some footage from others and knows they didn't get permission, because to date, I am the only one.

Charlie Very good. I have similar relationships with property owners and airport managers so I understand completely. I think you will be very happy with the X-Star for sure. Buy the Premium as it is the best bang for your buck. However, if you can wait, Autel Robotics plan on introducing a new camera with a 1" CMOS sensor as well as a new model. This is all due to happen around April. I've been pleased with the performance of the X-Star and I highly recommend that you watch FPVGUY'S video showing all of the available drone cameras and which performs best. Surprisingly, the X-Star outperforms the X3 camera on the Inspire 1. Watch his video though as he does some in depth, scientific analysis. Good luck with your purchase! I couldn't pass up a great deal I got at Caroliner Dronz. Frank gave me a great deal on a white XSP w/extra batt. My previous Chroma was white. I didn't have a problems keeping track of it. I haven't had the weather to fly yet. So I'm trying to learn what I can from your nice vids. Question; does the start motors button also shut them down? I like to "catch and release". The difference between the standard and premium is the video downlink. The standard uses WiFi and the premium uses a long range system with a 720p downlink. The app is the same for both. if it were me, I'd buy the premium as its the most bang for your buck.

ATTI mode can you explain how it work and what is it for?

Sure. Atti mode is the non-gps flight mode. The aircraft will maintain elevation using the barometer inside the flight controller. It will not maintain position in the X and Y axis though. it makes for some very nice panning shots as one you start moving, the aircraft will drift in the direction you were going without wanting to stay in place. Kevin, as a new X-Star Premium owner (when it arrives from Carolina Dronz next week), this is a great preview! I have the Android Star Link app loaded. It is v1.03.04. I'm missing the teaching mode and streaming modes. Not sure if that is because I'm not connected to the bird, or a version, or Android difference. Would you happen to know?

+Fair Weather -I just got my X-Star Premium Yesterday. The Android Version of the Starlink App doesn't have Waypoints, POI, Teaching Mode, or KZbin video Stream. The app is still in development so us Android users won't have all the features shown in this video until the full feature Android App is approved for final release. Autel Tech Support told me several more weeks before app is available with all features.

+Fair Weather That's not development related. It's a marketplace approval thing. The same thing happened when DJI released the Phantom 3 only it was Apple that delayed the app release. More later as I haven't returned to my shop. I did get an email today telling me the app was ready for both Android and iOS.

+Skylab Flight Systems Hey Kevin, one more thing is that the configurations and capabilities of the camera on the X-Star seem unlimited. As a photographer, I'm very interested in DNG and the video "log" setting, which I believe to be S-Log, which is basically a RAW version for video, if I'm right. The many framerates and resolutions that this camera has should make the X-Star a very powerful aerial imaging platform!

Mike Remvidas Hey Mike. Thanks for watching my video. The X-Star has a built in failsafe that will return the aircraft to its take off point should it lose radio signal. That takeoff point is called Home Point. Always make sure it is accurate before you take off and you should have no worries getting back should you lose signal. One thing to note about the "return to home" feature is at what altitude the aircraft will fly at while returning. In your settings menu, you can set that height to whatever you like. I always check mine before take off and compare it to my surroundings making sure that it will clear the tallest obstacle near the area you are flying. Thanks for the question. Fly safe!

you can calibrate by pressing and holding both take off and go home button for 5 seconds. Then the x star premium lights will begin flashing yellow, then you begin the calibration dance.

I watched your video again because its so informative, thanks. One question, when recording a video I know that I can get the video off the SD Card on the X-Star. How can I record it on my Samsung Note 3 at the same time I am flying. Is possible to record directly to my Phone. I do have the Starlink app installed but can not see where the setting is. Thanks

Vaughan Lundin Thank you for the kind words. You cannot record your flights directly to your phone. You can, after landing, download the footage from the camera without having to remove the micro SD card. To do that, you just need to view the footage. While doing so, you will have the option to save to your device. Now, if you're interested in rcording what is displayed during the flight, you will have to use a screen recording app but that records what's on the screen, not just the camera view. Hope that helps!

+Shawn Brasuell Honestly, I use an iPad Mini 2 and I think it's the perfect size. I'm not sure I'd personally want to go any bigger. Again, that's my preference. I've used my Google Nexus 7 on it too. Between the two, I will always pick up the iPad Mini first.

You shouldn't have to bind your radio to the aircraft as it comes from the factory bound. However, of you do need to rebind the radio, open up your user manual and follow those steps.
