It doesn't surprise me that the book has been labeled "timely" when the institutions that bore it's literary concepts are timeless in a sense. Racism, colorism, etc being so ingrained in American culture makes it so that stories such as these are always right on time.

How ironic. Yesterday, several libraries were out if this book near me. That very night, an old episode of the Jeffersons was on. Jenny's bro returned after 2 yrs of being in Paris. Jenny is dark complexion. Her bro was so light he could pass for white. While in Paris he chose to pass for white. He returned to the states to find who he was. Jenny was jealous of him. She questioned why she couldn't be the one with the white complexion and take advantage of the opportunities the complexion afforded.

Race race race race....is there a black author who writes books that don't have anything to do with someone's color? Jeez I want to support them but there needs to be more variety in what these black authors write.

Yes there are, but also you’re forgetting it’s a big part of their lives. How they’re perceived and treated molds their art a lot of the time, and unfortunately they don’t have the privilege of living life care free. But to answer your question, there are.

@@worldtree2027 I'm black, and not to be mean to you because that's not my intention at all, but your comment is one of the reasons why I don't like the racial books. A lot of times they just put these thoughts in peoples minds that really aren't true. Race is not and never has been a big part of my life. I live a normal life and I had a great childhood. There's more to black people than the struggle. There are middle class black people and there are rich black people. We don't all live in the hood, and growing up I knew very few black people who did. These stories make people think that black people are all disadvantaged and that we all live in a struggle. It just isn't true, and that's why as a black girl I always felt more connected to the white protagonists than the black ones. I'm not saying writers can't ever talk about race, but for once it would be nice to read about black people who's story is not centered around their race.

@@ranip7644 It depends on experience but especially in successful black individuals there’s much more adversity than those who aren’t. Non black authors don’t usually have exclusive issues deeply routed in their upbringing that dictate the way they share their art. And for a lot of people those experiences can be the driving force or motor for their ambition so when they’re on they choose to share things like that to bring attention to it or to vent. But not every black artist or author is like that so it’s not as if they’re a monolith, but the reason the ones that go in depth with real social issues are revered the most is because they highlight things that touch us in a different way than your traditional fictional book about made up crimes or super heroes. Also I’m mixed btw, just wanted to share my perception about it and provide a “why” answer to your question. I appreciate the courteous and curious dialogue though.

@@worldtree2027 Yes I agree. Experience does play a part. That's probably one of the reasons I feel this way about it. And yes, great dialogue. Have a blessed day 😊
