World renowned autism authority Dr. Ami Klin takes a deeper look at autism beyond its widely acknowledged genetic origins. He explores how autism results when the evolutionarily conserved and developmentally early emerging mechanisms of social adaptation, such as the mutually reinforcing
choreography between infant and caregiver, are disrupted.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I don't see the comment you were responding to, but wanted you to know that your father is admired and respected by many in the autism field - several of my clients just love him, having seen him present. He's a brilliant man.

Watching in 2021 and this has not aged well. This ableist view of autism is on the way out, but not fast enough.

at 16:28 how he points out "it's as if they brought into this world the reflex that orients them to people but it has no traction" - prioritizing therapies (like Relationship Development Intervention) that focus on nonverbal facial communication + neurosensorimotor programming (HANDLE and MNRI reflex integration) makes so much sense in light of this discovery.

@Superdiza: I think it's well accepted that much of the "growth" is due to an increase in diagnosis, esp. at the "high functioning" end of the spectrum

This was an interesting talk. I have four adult children all who are on the autism spectrum; IQs from 152 - 89. There is so much research on the subject but little practical advice and support for parents as they try to help their children. I am now getting my doctorate involving autism and schooling; something that was very difficult for my children. Open research to practical applications of the studies so parents are empowered to help their kids and teachers are educated enough to teach them.

There already exists a 'cure' in the form of intensive behavioral treatments. What is so revolutionary about Dr. Klin's talk is that now we have a compelling avenue from which to make an early diagnosis.

next question-is there really a growth or is there more diagnosis? are there more docs who can diagnose autism? i mean, my dad has it, my grandpa has it-i have it too. but my dad and ma grandpa never were diagnosed (bud had luck and met women who were very empathic and in a sense complimentary to them, so helped them with interactions with neurotypicals-which they gave to their children-to learn and behave correct (as good as possible^^)

It's 2020 now...rates are currently reported at 1 in 54 US children. RDI still only approach I'm aware of that addresses the processes he is talking about.

autism is not a mental illness, and disorders that are characterized as 'mental' are rarely purely psychological or 'mental. there are neurophysiological, neurosensorimotor components to everything in the DSM.

Interesting- if you look at the explosion of AU disorders going on in Special Ed right now its pretty scary. I wonder if a contributing factor is the way that kids are often dropped into paid daycare often within a few weeks of birth. There is no way that a paid daycare worker is going to be able to make eye contact as much or interact as much as a parent even with the best will in the world. Makes me wonder if some kids who would have had minor oddities fixed by parents instinctively providing more attention now grow up 'on the spectrum'.

I'm sorry, that's not the case with autism. 'oddities fixed by parents instinctively providing more attention' Individuals with autism are not wired the same way as a neurotypical individual and there's absolutely nothing wrong with this. Those oddities or quirks are their ways of coping with a world that is so over stimulating. Taking that calming mechanism away because it seems abnormal isn't going to help them. More people are being diagnosed because it's becoming more recognized and more trained individuals are available to the public. Autism wasn't around when I was a kid, that was only 20 years ago, but if it had I probably would have been diagnosed and my husband definitely would have instead of shoved in special ed but not really being mentally deficient in any hard way. It's such a huge spectrum with each case being different that it's no wonder we're only now realizing more people fall under it. I think understanding and recognition will help people feel less disconnected and alone. An 'Ah ha' that's why I think like this? It's okay, there are others, so many others who feel the same? That would be such a relieving feeling.

themostdismal, not sure what your point is? I'm simply stating that autism involves basic neurophysiological components, it's not a 'mental' disorder. There is overlap between professions and terms, and autism originates at the level of physiology (including brain and nervous system development). There is even research now showing that children with autism have differences in how their lungs developed.

Let's keep things civil. That is a bigoted remark. He speaks very clearly and with a slight accent and he is soft-spoken. He also mentioned that he was raised in an institution. He has come a long way wouldn't you agree? The man is obviously a winner since he is successful in his field. And the word is "enunciate."

Yes, MDMA is of therapeutic interest for treating the co-morbid conditions associated with autism--things such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation--but not so much for the disorder of autism itself.

This talk is really interesting. So many people misunderstand autism! Running around screaming about vaccines and mercury just distracts everyone, when we really are close to a cure!
