With a 15 year old on the spectrum, we have been through many avenues of sensory issues. It takes time to sort out the child's needs (as you stated) and it changes as they get older. Your emotional state brought back memories of many issues past and present in thinking I was a bad mom also. It's hard not to have that thought but always remember you are not alone. I hear so many stories with our support group when it sounds like my story. Keep up the good work mom! You are making a difference for Nate and other families watching! Thank you!

Great video Jess. Your videos have been so instrumental in teaching my kids about autism and I have seen them interact with special needs children with grace they have learned from you. This Christmas I bought my friend’s autistic child one of those foot roller/massagers. He’s so in love with it and pulls it out when he needs to calm himself. Momma loves it too 😉

I have not finished the video yet (watching as I comment) but I was thinking I should add my own suggestions from my experiences: -Chewable jewelry. If an autistic person needs lots of oral input or chews on stuff like clothes, it's worth a try. You can start with baby teething necklaces since they're more readily available and cheaper. But once you figure out if you like something, chewigem, ark therapeutic and stimtastic have great chews. (just 'cause i'm at that part right now: jumping does not only feel good on the legs/feet, but also gives vestibular input - the same input we get from rocking and spinning!) -having sunglasses, ear defenders and anything like that available. I have these in my backpack usually. -For those around an autistic person, it can be useful to tell the difference between a meltdown or a shutdown. Most people know about meltdowns. Shutdowns are kind of a coping mechanism as a response to overload where some senses shut down, as the name implies. That makes you less responsive, either super sensitive or not sensitive at all, moving can be hard. -what you mentioned about staying calm is a great example of how autistic people actually can have A LOT of empathy! Mirroring other people's emotions - even if it's an animal, or a character on TV - is actually pretty common with autistics. It's awesome to hear you talk so fondly of things that help your son. Lots of parents of autistic kids see these things are "chores" and "burdens" :( sorry this is late, But hey, all month is autism acceptance month :D

Happy World Autism Day! I love watching your videos and this one was a great one, my daughter Lily was diagnosed with autism at 14 months old and has a lot of similar sensory issues your son has. My daughter is now 4 and it's fun to see what works for other kids on the spectrum

Oh my God yes. Mini trampolines and eReaders saved our sanity. I don’t worry about screen time either, both of my autistic kids are doing well academically so I’m like “meh.” Oddly, we have always had better luck at senior restaurant (like Dennys) or ethnic restaurants. They figure out my kids are different and accommodate.

My daughter was diagnosed on April 3, 2019. She is going to be 3 in Sep. this video is very helpful. Thank you for making it. I am going to try the sleep suggestion. The scariest thing she does right now is run. She has ran in the street several times and doesn’t seem to understand that it’s dangerous.

That is scary! Nate has gotten better with time on that. I still hold his had whenever we are out in a parking lot or on the street because I still don’t fully trust him. Prayers for you guys! A diagnosis is scary but awesome! It opens doors for help.

Loved the video Jess. I cried when you was talking about potty training and you started crying. I'm having trouble getting my daughter potty trained she's 5years old. She hasn't been diagnosed with autism yet but we know she has sensory issues. We went back in November for an austim test but i feel like they rushed us though the test and didn't really listen to me. I told them how much trouble I'm having potty training her and they said since she don't hold her pee for long periods of time she's not ready to be potty trained. How can a 5years old not be ready to potty train? Something has to be going on somewhere. They said at the testing that they don't think she has autism then when I got letter in the mail from testing place it said they believe she shows signs of OCD. I haven't seen any signs of OCD, I have talked to her Dr and friends that has kids with autism and they all say they believe she has autism. So I have talked to her Dr and we are getting a new autism test at a different place.

I'm so sorry, Mama. I am praying for you have a better experience and doctors that listen to you. I am here for you. Potty training is so so hard. Just keep being patient. She will get it. It just may take longer for her. HUGS!

My kids don't have autism but still have meltdowns in public sometimes. It's just part of a kid being a kid. I was literally standing in line to check out once and someone told me I needed to leave with my child.

I have gotten more mindful about people in Walmart when I hear a kid screaming now... before I'd get so aggravated and be like "good lort, can you not teach ur child any better than that.. little spoiled brat..ridiculous" (in my head, or under my breath). Now, I'm like, "well, idk the situation, i'm sure the mom is doing what she can - and this is just a couple minutes of annoyance in my day.." (I have to work in retail stores.. the joys)

My daughter is the same way with the bathroom thing. She never has a problem with going #1 but she has a little something in her undies at school from #2 but no problems at home. I ask her if she needs to go but she always says no. Some days I use to have her sit on the toilet for a while because I was so worried she wasn’t going for long periods of time. Also don’t worry about the people staring. I deal with the same stuff and u are not alone. My sister in laws sister always tells me I need to spank her butt and this and that. I ignore them. My kid is mine and I’m her mom and I know her best and what she needs. And you know what your Nate needs so ignore the mean people. You’re a great mom and I’m right there with you. Much love. ❤️
