The early diagnosis of Autism can significantly impact the quality of the life of the person. Therefore, it is essential to ensure an accurate and early diagnosis of autism. Unfortunately, autism’s diagnosis is delayed by several years in female patients compared to males. In this video we will be following the journey of Maya and how going undiagnosed can impact the life of young girls. We will also touch on current research that is making a positive impact on this field.
This video was created by McMaster University students Alexandra Marques, Armin Sariaslani, and Emilyanne Stocks in collaboration with the McMaster Demystifying Medicine Program.

My name is Maya, I have autism, add, anxiety and I’ve dealt with a lot of depression. Many people have made fun of me, I believed every word people told me. I’m a really sensitive person, I have always felt like I’m different. I love singing, drawing and I just love nature. I hope one day that I can show people how it felt to be me. I just want to feel that someone understands me.

omg same! im almost 27 and id like to get assesed but im like fearful of bringing it up cause i dont have the "typical symptoms" but i also have anxiety, depression, fear of social interactions and i didnt necessarily get bullied at school but i did ended up very isolated most of the time and had such a difficult time making new friends that id keep the ones that i had even tough they were super toxic to me cuz i didn't want to start over, the whole tought of trying to bond with new people was too scary to actually consider... i also had "panic attacks" when i felt overwhelmed... still do. my therapist siad they are anxiety attacks... idk ps. also i remember my elementary school teachers telling my parents that i "isolated myself" amd always had issues with being "a bit too blunt" another thing i remember that my mom absolutely denies but ik happened was me having "a fit" (i must have been around 8 years old,maybe a bit older) is my mom tellong me something like "whats wrong with u?? are u autistic or something" she totally denies this but its siper common with her, she says very insensitive things, regrets it later and proceeds to pretend it never happened so well that she actually believes it never happened

Im starting to get to know my authentic self now, but it’s very difficult. I’m very happy I’m aware of this now, but it would have changed my life if I had known about this when I was a child. About to turn 53 here, and just came to realize I am autistic. I'm afraid to go to my GP as I've heard so many horror stories of misdiagnosis, and I know there will be a cost associated with seeking official diagnosis. Hey Sarah, I felt the same when seeing a similar video and I'll soon have an appointment for diagnosis. I live in France, but maybe you can follow the same steps as I did in your country. I went to a psychologist and asked him to do behavior therapy with me, I explained all my social struggles. Later, I asked him if he thinks it might be possible that I'm autistic. He wasn't sure in the beginning so we did 3 pre-tests. They all indicated a high chance for autism, so we took an appointment in a diagnosis center. I haven't been there yet because of Covid-19 but will go there ASAP. I hope you find people that can help you with the way to your diagnosis.

I'm in Scotland, went to GP first, who did a pre assessment then sent referral for official assessment, took around 18mth due to Covid, depends where you are in the world, and if you're using NHS type system or private. Private is quicker obvs. But official NHS route I've been told is more recognized as official and therefore less barriers, when looking for accommodations. @NEW HOPE HEALINMGHOME I would never wish my daughter to be "cured" of her autism. Autism lets you see the world differently and can be a super power. She is an amazing artist BECAUSE of her autism. For those struggling with the down sides, she sees a counselor who helps her and saw a speech therapist who helped her learn rules of social communication. Medicine can also be helpful. Getting the diagnosis is the first step and learning more is next. It is sooo different in girls.

I always called children out for breaking the rules and unintentionally got myself in to all kinds of bother. In High School, teachers where constantly yelling at me and referring to me as lazy and a daydreamer. Going out your own front door is an adventure when your autistic. The fact I work in education now as an adult is the perfect epitome or irony. I’m crying right now. This story. Is exactly what I have gone though my entire life. I always felt like an alien, yet excelled in things which made people not believe me. Making friends too. The absolute worst. Even though I value friendship. I’ just finished my evaluation and was told I am on the spectrum, also adhd. I been so emotional all week. Im 27, a mom. Have a nurotypical presenting family. Thankfully my husband is the one who encouraged me to go though this. He knew I never had the support prior. My mom truly believed vaccines caused autism, and argued with my husband (who’s about to become a doctor) on this journey I chose. She felt since I’m successful. I’m fine. I won pageants. How can this be possible? Yet I look back. I had to learn to socialize. I masked so well…it’s painful looking back and seeing all the mask I worn to try to fit in (pageants I had no issue. I love dressing up, and feeling like a princess) I’m also a huge nerd. I always wanted to make videos, collect my dolls, make money on eBay. That was my teenage years. I’m thankful to know, and I don’t find it a bad thing as people like my mom do. I find it comforting knowing I was not alone and can find support. I’m not ashamed, I’m happy to know more of myself. Still a bit emotional over it but know there’s hope for me to understand better 💕

I'm 29, and these traits sound extremely similar to what I've experienced since childhood. I developed a great talent for art at age 11, and by 13, I was drawing perfectly realistic portraits. I'm very nervous about getting possibly diagnosed, because I hate leaving my home, and only leave home with my mother (I know, pathetic since I'm a grown woman). I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety in 2015 and spent 3 days in a ward for suicidal thoughts. I have a list of issues I experience, like dumb phobias, eating disorder (when I was a teenager), sensitivity to sounds, terrified of social interactions, no friends, mimicking other people's gestures, terrified of driving, etc, etc. When I'm making a phone call or having to talk to someone, it feels like I'm throwing myself off a bridge. It's super scary. Socializing is like skydiving.

I don't really tell everyone or people about my diagnosis. But I still get startled by loud chatter. When I was in college sometimes the classrooms erupt with loud noise when everyone is there and I remember having to get up and leave because it was pretty that particular day. It doesn't change when you get older you just learn how to manage and adapt to it better. So, for anyone that's telling you there's a cure, no there's not. You, as the human that experiences autism, learn how to adapt, manage it and accept as a part of you.

I wasn't diagnosed until my 30s, but I thought this was about me. The bullying (even as an adult), the exclusion, the anorexia, the suicide attempt and ideations are very common. I've experienced all of them and continue to have issues. I live in a major city but was told no one know anything about aspergers (or ASD-1) to help. I still can't believe therapist refuse to learn about adults with this when we have such a high suicide rate. You'd think they would teach psychology students about ASD. Apparentally they don't because no help in a major city is available.

When I first started seeking a diagnosis my therapist although supportive for some reason refused to say the word autism. Even when I would say autism spectrum disorder or autism he would only and say aspergers even though technically that's not a diagnosis anymore and has only recently moved to saying "your...uhh....spectrum disorder"

I’m 32, always diagnose as depressed. A psychiatrist told me that it was possible for me to be autistic. I asked to do a test, and then this other psychiatrist said “yeah, you look like you’re autistic, but you’re old enough so you don’t need a diagnose. You already know how to live your life, anyway”. I was turned down and I had to look everywhere to get a diagnose. And then, last week I got the results of a more exhaustive test and FINALLY got the diagnose as autistic. The thing is: if you don’t know why you’re struggling with maintining jobs or going to school, have difficult relationships with all the people that surrounds you, everything makes you sick and uncomfortable… maybe you actually NEED a diagnose so you KNOW how to live in this world! I hope everyone who watches this video and suspects they may have it, then go for it! Go for the diagnose! Don’t waste your young adulthood years in misery like me.

I had so much trouble relating to other people that I skipped everything that other people see as milestones.I didn’t go to school,find work that I could remain in,learn how to drive.I did marry when I found a man who wouldn’t press me to go out into the world...who would allow me to remain at home and safe,but I had no children,since I felt that I could not be an adequate mother,and didn’t want to harm them.Ive always felt like a alien,and felt that other people knew things automatically that I struggled and still struggle with.But I watch them carefully,and imitate them,so that no one will discover how truly strange I am.

I was born with autism. Since I was a baby, I never liked being touched, which made my mom cry because she thought that she was being a bad mother. I would only ever snuggle with her when I was sick. I didn’t learn to talk, walk, or get toilet-training down until I was 14 months. I was a bit of a wild child in my youth because my parents didn’t have the resources that are available now. Despite my challenging behavior, they never saw me as lesser. They have always loved me through it. I remember a time when I was feeling inadequate because my little sister was developing as a normal child and I felt like I had let my parents down for not turning out like her. My mom was horrified when she heard me admit that to her and told me that she wouldn’t have me any other way and that she loved me the way that I was/am. By the time I reached high school, resources were more available for me and I began to thrive more. I finally had teachers who understood me and didn’t see me as a frustrating burden because they knew about autism and how it affected me. I hated high school, but my teachers were very kind and patient with me. As an adult now, I have not reached the same milestones as my similarly-aged cousins and friends. I am not dating or married, I do not have children, and I don’t have a house of my own. However, I am working full time and have an apartment. Despite me being different, my family has never seen me as a lesser person. They love me for who I am. They even love the parts of me that I hate. I am very blessed to have that. Not everyone does.

I was recently brushed off & spoken to in what I feel was a harsh manner by a psychiatrist regarding my therapist’s autism diagnosis. I was told by this psychiatrist that I probably just have a personality disorder instead. I feel like this is common treatment for women, especially adult ones, when they suspect autism & actually go looking for it.
@robokill387

It's common with adult autism in general. Many psychiatrists only know about the stereotypical types of autism, and adult autism is so poorly researched/supported that many areas autism diagnosis process for *adults* involves speaking to your parents and observing you playing with toys like a child. It's ridiculous and needs to be talked about more. Is there literally any other diagnosis process for any other disability that involves interviewing the parents as an adult? It's infantilizing.

I didn’t know I had autism until I had to drop out of university when I was almost 23. I made it through three semesters, never passing a morning class, and never had more than two classes at the end of the semester. My GPA was 1.2, versus my 3.6 in high school. I was put on academic probation, but no one made any move to help me. Not until it was too late. In all the time I was in college, I never met any of the deans. Only one of my teachers ever tried in any way to help me because of my already-diagnosed ADHD. I went through most things completely alone, unless my boyfriend happened to be on campus. (We met online before I went to college, and he was the biggest reason I chose the one I did. We have been married for 13.5 years now.) Shortly before I moved out of the dorm, I did have an appointment to talk to one of the deans, but it never happened. To think day, I do not know who the deans were or what they looked like. I had to leave school because I could not get funding, due to my horrendous grades. Fourteen and a half years later, I still owe a lot of money and I have been able to pay off only a tiny bit. The fees keep building up more and more, and I have no idea how much I owe. I can’t do a thing about it. I have nothing to show for it. Considering the lack of help from such an expensive school, I honestly don’t think I should have to pay back everything. The school should have tried to help me with ADHD, and they should have noticed my autism much, much earlier. (I was homeschooled before university, so it was not as easily noticed.) I was obviously struggling the entire time I was there. The best grade I ever got was a B. Everything else was pretty much Ds and Fs, with a few Cs. Now, my other health problems have gotten much worse, and I can no longer work one day a week. I can’t find the help I need to deal with life. I look fine, so I’m obviously just being lazy, right? That’s how people have always reacted toward me. Even family members have turned against me for something that was not my fault. They also seem to treat me as “less” since my diagnosis. I hate that, and it is extremely hurtful that my siblings no longer seem to care about me. I don’t have friends. I need to get my child evaluated, but I can’t figure out how, and no one is helping me. It’s all up to me, and I can’t handle it on my own.

I get very paranoid in public of what people think and say about me. I have people around me with similar issues like my best friend she is also autistic and her mother works for people with autism and other things, and my brother is dyslexic. I use to have a difficult time dragging myself to meet with people and make friends and actually talk and enjoy the time spent with them. I’m not diagnosed with Autism but maybe it’s possible. The reason I bring this to the forefront is because socialization can be painful for some people but I always kept this one thing in mind fear holds us back. It’s very possible your not going to know what shared interests you have with someone until you’ve spent time with them. The first meeting may be painful and maybe even the second and so on but EVENTUALLY, it will start to feel normal to have that person around like how you feel with your mama. Push through it and trust me eventually you will have formed a friendship. Friendships are like flowers. You don’t plant a seed and have a flower in 5 minutes. Keep trying. ❤️

Hi. I'm 14 and have autism. I'm currently homeschooling because my mom and the doctor are making me. I also have a hard time with friends. Every Wednesday I and my friends go to youth group together. The only thing is it's really loud and bright there. I always go and hide in the bathroom when it gets too overwhelming. When I come out my bff is mad at me because she thinks I don't want to spend time with her. I feel bad that I can't be there but when I am, I feel like I'm going to have a meltdown. I wish I could explain it to her. She doesn't really hang out with me anymore. Probably because as I got older, she realized I wasn't fun to hang around. I hate that. She completely ignores me. My other friend is really understanding and helps me through stuff. I love her so much and am so grateful for her. Sometimes I go on walks at 12 am and weird stuff like that. I always get into trouble when I get back but it feels like I can't help it. I hate when I'm barely hanging on to friendships, or when it's too overwhelming for me. I wish I could be like my friends so bad

Also back then in high school yrs when someone ask me how come I didn't drive a car or something like that I tell them about my condition I told them that im autistic or I had autism & finally some don't know what it is, some were afraid of me, some don't wanna be my friends anymore & some ran away from me, which hurts me alot.😢😢😢😢😢 But thank God that I got real friends (from the high school theater) & family that support me, loved me & accepted me for who I am as a shy & quiet autistic artist. 💖✌🏻☮

I’m mildly autistic and I had a similar story as a kid when I lived in California. No one liked me and everyone avoided me and my parents were critical towards me. My mom would make fun of me a lot. I was smart though which changed my life as an adult. I became quite wealthy off of stocks and crypto thanks to my smarts. I moved to Hungary a few years ago where my social life changed dramatically. I made several friends and even a boyfriend who proposed to me this July. My now fiancé and I live in Budapest now. Got a beautiful home in the old part of the city. The people here in Hungary are so down to earth here unlike in California where everyone was degenerate filth. Basically most people in the western world are trashy and mean. Eastern Europeans on the other hand are a complete opposite. Stay strong Maria don’t give up. If you look far and wide you’ll find someone. I thought I was doomed to me an outcast when I was a teen.

Right now she is a loner but it does not bother her. I do try to help her socialize, however, I think she just is not ready yet. Communicating is difficult for her, and she resorts to aggression. I’m sorry about your experience and, yes, the world is a cruel place, but know that you do have a place in the world. You mean a lot. Know your worth and forget about what others say or think of you. I am 43 and I just found out this week that I might be on the spectrum. My dad is 79 and was never diagnosed. I dont think he even suspects it. He just thinks he is weird. Everything makes so much sense now. I have always said that social interactions never made sense to me. The 10 therapists I saw in my life never figured out!! I have to say that I mask pretty heavily though. I taught myself so many scripts. Because I am always acting and have to go against what feels natural to me, I am constantly drained. Like the small talk. I have my small talk scripts and feels completely ridiculous while doing it but people seem happy. They like that I share mundane details about my life. I dont understand how they can find that interesting. But thats how it works in the neurotypical world so I go with it. I always always felt on the outside looking in. Now I understand why. Anything unpredictable overwhelms me. It can be very challenging. Again I mask. I hate lying but I lie about that sometimes. I have always been ashamed that life is so much harder for me.

I was diagnosed at age 30 and this story is almost identical to what happened to me when I was younger. I've always struggled with my weight as well due to my ADHD. I tend to do things impulsively sometimes. So, binge eating is impulsive... Which led to an eating disorder. No one knows that I have an ED, but I was pulled aside when I was in the psychiatric hospital about my eating habits. I found it hard to eat at the hospital because I really dislike the smell of cafeterias, which makes me feel like vomiting. My diagnosis has helped me, but also made me very sad because I knew that I had to change my expectations for my future. I still struggle a lot, but I'm doing better.

I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD and a learning disability when I was 6, and while my academic problems were accommodated, my social difficulties were not. I struggled all throughout my school years socially, with making friends and relating to other people. I was bullied relentlessly in school and by the time I was in high school, I developed social anxiety and depression. I also frequently get obsessed with certain topics and I tend to talk about them a lot until someone tells me upfront that they don’t care and wish to change the subject. I’ve never been diagnosed with autism but I do have a lot of signs.

I came here because I'm greatly confused in social situations and since being a preteen have noticed "autistic traits". This includes disconnects in communication with even my own family. I'm very surprised to find that anxiety, depression, and even eating disorders are common in autistic females because I've struggled with all three since my early teens! I also find myself easily overwhelmed and very sensitive to sounds. I'm not going to self-diagnose but I'm considering autism or Asperger's as a possibility.

And then the me who had eating disorders, major anxiety and depression, borderline personality disorder, after spending 16 years in general psychiatry, after seeking help for executive dysfunction and sensory overloads, meltdowns and shutdowns, got diagnosed after an entire life of being called lazy unmotivated and even spiteful and manipulative with my "tantrums"

I have never been diagnosed with anything because I've never even been to a doctor for anything mental. I am pretty sure that I have depression. Mostly seasonal though as it gets somewhat better in the summertime. I've struggled with what I thought was just sadness since I was nine. I still have suicidal impulses. I sometimes have meltdowns when I'm at home. I've never been good at having friends. I never understood what was wrong with me. This video makes me wonder if I might have Autism.

i meet pretty much all the criteria for autism and i relate to so many traits, but the thing that throws me is my social abilities. i’m not bad at small talk and i don’t mind it. i used to suffer with social anxiety in high school, but now i’m much better and chill with talking to people. i’d call myself an ambivert (i like hanging out with friends and don’t get burned out easily with them but i also love my own company). this makes me feel like an imposter because it seems being socially awkward and very introverted is a universal autistic trait. lol help

I’ve been made fun of my entire life. Words *did* take me down, and I’ve always been terrified of negotiating relationships or scared if people will make fun of my interests. I’m very sensitive. However, I believe myself to be kind, and very compassionate with my interests. I need people who get me. I love art, music, and a lot more! I just wish people would understand how tough it is to, well, be _me._

Hi, how can I tell someone that I think she had Asperger? She is my ex girlfriend (just breakup) who live with her parents we are still in contact… without they think I only want shittalk about her… she got many of this symptome copying mostly her mom, hate to left her home (we lived together), she getting nervous, want to go home asap, I feel she cant read emotions really well, tonn of silly routine like she have to watch disney movie to fall a sleep. non-autonomous, really naive on the first week she told me her credit card pin number and so, problem in every social situation, she got frustrated and turn silent front of other people, take everything direct!!! sometimes just turn off and stare nothing… just applied 8th different uni/course in last 5 year without finishing any of them and all because she wasnt able communicare there, only boy “friends” from the past many of them take advantage of her “naivety”. now she really mad at me, but I have to communicate it somehow.
@linden5165
@linden5165 3 жыл бұрын
You said she's mad with you currently. That means she will absolutely not want to hear this from you. If you suggest it now while she's upset with you she is more likely to reject the idea, associate it with her negative feelings about you and take longer to accept the possibility and receive diagnosis. It's far more likely to harm her than hurt her. It certainly does sound like she might be on the spectrum. Do you have friends in common that you could talk to so they could talk to her about it instead? But make sure you are only motivated by concern and caring of her and nothing else. Do not use it as a weapon against her or to blame her for your relationship not working. If you have no role or part in her life then you should probably just keep your thoughts to yourself and let her find out in her own time with people she feels better with.

My girlfriend also has aspergers, and she is a lot like your ex. Somewhat naive, acts childish, and stares in silence. Despite all of these things that I guess you consider faults. I see them to just be a part of her absolutely beautiful personality. Sure she can be a child sometimes but I am absolutely in love with it. I kinda see it as a way to get away from all seriousness of life. I mean when your girlfriend puts on the little mermaid for the 10th time and does a high pitch screech when her favorite character or smtg cute pops up, it really makes loving her worth it. When you date someone with aspergers you must be prepared to face these things and love them forever.

Man this is too similar to my experience. I didn’t realize that how many of these things affect my life on a daily basis. I’m Constantly mirroring peoples body language, have many self soothing/stimming behaviors, certain textures and smells really bother me and have a “slight” obsession with license plates (Hawaii, Oregon and Alaska are my faves...). That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I haven’t really noticed up until recently that I might be on the spectrum because it really fills in a lot of the blanks for things I’ve been struggling with my whole life. Hopefully one day I can try and seek out a diagnosis to get a more clear picture

@Clickwrap
@Clickwrap 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, shit pretty much hit the fan for me as soon as I hit high school. I had problems here and there, but nothing too explosive or major at the time, until I hit my teens. Then, the social climate just became so much more complicated and I couldn’t navigate it any more, no matter how much I tried. It was exhausting and I always failed. So I just gave up eventually. Withdrew even more and lost more and more friends over time until there was none. I also tried to kill itself (and failed) very similarly to the character in this video clip. I know I shouldn’t isolate myself, but I just don’t want to burden other people and I know I am so weird.. I’ll just uncomfortable the whole time I’m out and it’s so exhausting. So the cycle continues. I don’t really know what my breaking point will be for how lonely I am before I can’t take it again and they to end my life.

Because girls are usually better at copying social behaviors, we go undiagnosed. There are other factors of course but man, it would have been so much better to know that I was on the spectrum when I was younger rather than after struggling for years to keep up social and employment expectations, ending up in burn out and dealing with all sorts of health trouble from chronic stress. I was 33 before I found out I was autistic. We've got to get better tools in place both for diagnosis and for strategies to help autistics cope in a world that expects neurotypical behavior from people. That I could be labeled as anxious, stubborn, sensitive, highly intelligent or even mature for my age, stuck in my ways or even manipulative but never autistic when all the signs were present as a child, is incredibly frustrating. And I had to fight to even get an assessment done for myself. Because people laughed at me and brushed off all my struggles. That's got to change.

Hi im kiera this is my story: I am a 12 year old female who is getting tested for autism after 11 years of my parents asking for a test. I have dealt with many problems in my life such as anxiesty social anxiety and depression. Here is how my mum suspected that i have autism, at the age of 4 i used to stare into space ALOT so my mum took me for an epilepsy test and it was negative. Also i only like 3-4 actual meals and i get distracted alot. When i get excited/happy i usually talk in a baby voice.My attention span is short and i cannot stand still. I take situations very legitimately even if people are being sarcastic. At the moment i am dealing with depression which makes life alot harder. I mask my emotions really well so if i am at school and i am angry or sad most of the time i dont show it at all. I get bullied alot at school so i tend to be really quiet infront of people.Also if aomeone is calling my name my brain blocks it put and i dont respond until about five minutes later. And THATS how my mum finally got a test for autism for me which i have to take in september

I had to BEG my doctor to omease send me to a psychiatrist to diagnose me. I'm 20. I have been doing research for months about autism. My soon to be husband has autism. I never had decent friends, relationship or a boyfriend before him. My doctor says "what's the definition of "normal"? Aren't we all different? I don't want to put you in a box by calling you "autistic", you know?" But then she said that it'd be better if I get myself taken into an asylum/mental hospital. Isn't that like... Putting me literally in a box? How can I ever find a job, explain my difficulties to people/doctors/police/etc? Without having an actual paper in my hands that say I am officially autistic I will come over as lazy, tired, scared, stubborn, rude, dumb..... My mother didn't like what my doctor said. I'm gonna see a psychiatrist for the first time in January 2023. I'm so scared. Will they not believe me as well? Will they send me away? I've heard that autism testing takes months, up to years. Will I have to wait so long? My soon to be husband works at a special workplace for people with disorders. I want to work there too, I want to make a difference. I want to earn money and save up for our future house. We're both living at my parents' at the moment. .... I just feel like my doctor is laughing with my problems... 😢

This is 90% like me. How do I get a diagnosis? Is is expensive? Is there any aid? That disobeying rules is so me. I often reminded my classmates about the rules and asked them not to break them. However when the teacher asked me to help my classmates with homework, I would help. I have extreme sensitiveness to light, sound and smell. The dog scratching the floor from the Level above next door I could hear. Only I could hear and none of my family members could hear when I asked them to. I cry easily as I empathised and related to others’ sad situation. I need to “check” many times before going out. My intention was always pure however people turned and completely complex mine with their inputs…. I love numbers too. I’m obsessed with neatness. I will notice the movement in arrangement in a room setting. Anyone who “messed a little”, I would notice. However I often remind myself to be less ocd.
