Thank you SO SO much Ian for being willing to share your journey with the world. We live in Wisconsin and your videos are so powerful in helping our son who is 6 years old. The "meltdown" or what I would call "real" videos are incredibly helpful for all of us who have children with ASD. This is a huge learning opportunity. And while it may be hard to watch I can guarantee it was harder to film. I applaud you all and especially Ian for being so brave. Thank you all from our heart.

My daughter is 20 years old and has non verbal autism, adhd, anxiety, and pica. Growing up, she had many behavioral issues, was kicked out of a few class rooms, and a few doctors told me I should look into institutions before she became an adult. I cried many sleepless nights, but I never gave up on her, and after finding the right medications and changing my home environment to meet her needs, she has matured into a delightful young woman. She graduated high school, now goes to a day program and works to help the community. All the time, I get compliments on what a kind person she is. Please believe in your kids. They are so much more than a diagnosis.

Thanks for your help. We live in Italy my son is suffering from Autism and ADHD. He is 5 years old. In spite of the diagnosis and treatment, I note that in many Western Countries there are no training courses for parents. We must do everything from self-study, if there were no generous and diligent men like you, we would have remained without references. Thanks again for your availability and for helping us. I believe that, due to the increasing percentage of cases, it is necessary to put pressure on the institutions in order to guarantee family adequate training, especially for those who do not have the financial means to take advantage of the therapies. Thanks again.

Ian has really grown through the years. The original meltdown at the mall video was actually the first video I saw of yours when I first came across your channel, which was a few years ago. At the time I was going through some obstacles at home and at school. I also came across when you did a video about Connor and his social anxiety, which made me relate. I've noticed through the years Connor has grown and gotten out of his shell. And of course, sweet Alistair. Always funny.

There definitely is hope! We are 5 years post diagnosis and we have seen major progress as well. I was just commenting to a friend earlier today that after all the uncertainty and worry about how things would or would not work out, we are at a point that we can go and do fun family outings with ease and with very little accommodation. The only thing for us is that we tend to stay for shorter amounts of time than what most families seem to be doing. And that’s completely ok. 😊

Please don't take my answer as an offence. I do not mean to criticize or judge on parents of autistic children. I can only guess how hard it must be as a parent to see your child suffering and not knowing how to help your loved ones (no matter how hard you wish to!). Desperately searching for anything which could help. Maybe not taken for granted by "professionals". Maybe judged and criticized by "friends and family" who blame your education for the behavior your child shows. But: I do not really understand how the parents are supposed to be the experts. They are trying hard but probably don't know (can't know) what their children really need. I'd personally expect to find the "real experts" within the spectrum. Autism often looks very different from the outside than it actually feels from the inside. Maybe I misunderstood something. If that's the case, I am really sorry. But I'd really appreciate if you explain to me what I did wrong. This is the only way you can help me learn to improve. (social) misunderstandings are the story of my life :(

@Amanda Lee my son is two and he has meltdowns and he is so strong for me. He will be evaluated on the 29th of December. He is nonverbal and I know people say well he is still young but there is nothing. He has so many signs of autism. When he goes into the store he wears his sunglasses which helps sometimes with the meltdowns. At night is getting worse though for us because he stays up and rocks back and forth in his bed for hours. When he is upset he will rock back and forth on the couch for a long time. I am with you. We need to stick together ❤️. Because it gets trying at times but they are so beautiful and precious. If you ever need to talk you can message me on here. Remember to take care of your as well. @@coriettapadilla9977 Thank you for your kind words! We had our evaluation on Nov 14 and our son was diagnosed with Autism “level 2”. One thing the specialist said that really stood out to me was that many kids with autism have troubles with speech bc of tone or pitch of voice. So for example I have a higher pitched voice than his father. She explained to me that children with autism may hear that as two different languages. I compared it to talking to someone with a thick accent, we can understand some words, and some words we may not understand. I try to speak slower around my son now and I simplify my sentences so it’s easier for him to understand. Even with his diagnosis, they pretty much told us ~good luck~ because there isn’t a lot of help in the area we live. He’s going to get some occupational and physical therapy for gross motor skills. Speech is three times a week for 30min each session. I have printed out pictures of things he uses on a daily basis and made them into flash cards. We are working on using the PECS system (idk i spelled that correctly). Working on having him bring us the card for what he wants. He’s responding well to that so far and I also was able to get him to use a fork and spoon this week! 🤩 I’m glad we have this network of caring parents. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and stay in touch 💕 Let me know how your son’s appointment goes💕

@@ashleighg9070 thank you for your reply! You are right about warming up to the therapies. My son is FINALLY warming up to his speech teacher! We had him officially diagnosed with autism “level 2” on November 14. When we told family or friends, many of them replied with “Oh, I’m sorry.” There is nothing to be sorry about. Our son is very loving and a pressure seeker. He loves hugs and squeezes and all the attention he can get. We are blessed that he is healthy. I can imagine I’d be hard to deal with at times if I couldn’t speak what I was thinking! Autism teaches parents patience and kindness. I love the network we have. Your son is showing us strength. I didnt hve medication and therapy growing up, i was still able to learn to manage the "disorder". Takes getting used to the noises, new noise does surprise me but familiarizing is (desensitize, inoculate, whatever word you'd like to use, i`ll use familiarize) makes it better. Even young kids without autism hve trouble with new loud things, so we're all not that far from different, ours is just heightened. Autism is more than just a disorder.

My daughter is 16. We are both diagnosed ASD/ADHD. I replace the bathroom sink and cabinet yesterday. Daughter came home from school, saw the change and didn’t deal with it so well. A guest was over and didn’t understand why my daughter was so upset over an old dirty water damaged cabinet and sink. But it was the transition. She’s not as bad as when she was younger, as the would result in perhaps several days of severe meltdown until she accepted. Yesterday was just a bit of an argument and wanting the old sink back. She’s not medicated. Risperdone worked for amazingly me but I only did 6 months. I was violent and physically fought people. Smashed things etc. My daughter doesnt have the aggression I had/have persay so she can just be worked through lol. I on the other had No so much and a million times more agressive than my kids. We all use headphones in our house as a family. No therapies, except for me ( life skills) and mt other daughter speech therapy.

This brought me to tears! I'm in the eye of the struggle right now with my 7 year old. His main struggle is making friends. He is extremely social (by that I mean, he talks non-stop and always wants people around) but also socially awkward. He wants friends so badly but doesn't know how to interact in a way that makes sense to other children. When the other kids turn him away that is when the meltdowns occur. It breaks my heart. He's been in pragmatic speech therapy as well as occupational therapy for two years and I do see small improvements but each inch he moves forward, his peers move forward a foot (he isn't in any special class types so his peers are all neurotypical). It's like he's just trying to play an impossible game of catch-up. I'm sorry to be so negative... I really just wanted to say thank you for the message of hope. It helps.

You just told the exact story of my son too. He is going through the exact same issues. It's so awful to watch my sweet, kind boy go through such rejection because the other kids are more mature & just don't understand him. If you ever want to talk let me know. It sounds like we're going through the same exact experience. My son is 10.

I imagine the mall during the holidays probably makes your sons nervous, knowing how noisy and crowded they get (or used to) during that time.

It can be difficult so we usually go at quieter times during the day etc.

Amazing. Thanks for your inputs and this is just so amazing. I have a son 14 years old on the spectrum and he is currently non-verbal. I had no idea that there are actually pharma medicines which can actually help them. I will check them out and talk to our family doctor

This gives me so much hope. My 5 yr old girl, was diagnosed with level 1 autism in April 2022. its so nice to see a fellow autism family in Utah have success. I hope my little girl will get there one day. By the way, we live near Riverton, UT. Not to far from Murray.

Hey Autism Family! This is Bri bri Tacas2x Stay strong to the family! Ian is an amazing guy! As a guy with ASD, I can relate because I sometimes get sensitive with things, especially fire alarms or disturbing noises as of today. Stay strong Autism Family! You are never alone 😊! Never underestimate anyone and never give up!

Ian seems like a great guy! Even neurotypical people can become overstimulated and cranky in loud public places, I can only imagine how stressful it would have been for him. I'm glad he's able to experience the fun of the mall without becoming overwhelmed.

You are a hero to raise such a smart child. I have a seven year old son who we think is suffering from hyperoccussis, which is a condition that loud voices hurt him. We took him to ENT doctor, the doctor said his ear looks healthy to him. If it is hurting him, he thinks it is part of the autism symptoms. My son wears headphones 24 hours and 7 days of the week. Recently, we are thinking to homeschool him to reduce his exposure to loud voices. I wonder if Ian went to public school? And do you think homeschooling helps him deal with his problem better.

Ian goes to public school. We’d love to homeschool but currently don’t have the bandwidth.
