*Disclaimer* I am not a mom! I never understood how people are comfortable enough to get into children, they don’t know, face. If I see a kid staring at me/in my direction. I’ll wave and smile, maybe say hi. But I NEVER invade their personal space. They deserve the same respect you give (or supposed to give) adults.

I agree!!! If anything I just usually say something to the parents ( aka, you child is beautiful or smart, etc). If the child speaks to me I will respond but I’m not going to be disrespectful and touch anyone’s kid. That is just out of bounds. I especially hate when people touch children’s hands!!! Kids put their hands in their mouths. They’re always eating a snack. DO NOT TOUCH THEIR HANDS!!! I love what an excellent mom you are. Ann is such a beautiful child. That place for her to play is awesome!!!

It's a shame how the world is..... I don't think there is anything wrong with speaking to a child.....they have to learn about other people at some point. American culture is getting so weird.... People don't want you to touch a kids hand and I remember adult relatives kissing me in the mouth all the time.... This has changed. I don't touch other people's children...everybody is so scared all the time.

@@lovejay3157 When my daughter was smaller people didn't really do that..... They would say hello...and ask her name. If they did....I doubt I would have thought it was weird if someone touched her hand. As long as people don't cross any real personal boundaries that made her uncomfortable.....I'm from a different generation..... Things have really changed.... So many young people lack social skills...

I have two sons and remarried when they were seven and ten years old. My husband's son is autistic. He's very high functioning and had more of a pervasive behavior disorder trait. He was four when our family blended. He is now 26 years old and thriving very well The reason that attributes to this is because we never raised him as if he was "handicapped" due to being diagnosed with autism. He has grown out of many of the traits he had as a child like the hand flapping, rocking back and forth, fixation with wheels on a toy and would spin the wheel for long periods of time, etc. It takes a lot of patience and understanding to raise an autistic child. Both my sons were very caring towards him and they all got along well. One thing I can say is it is crucial not to treat the child as if they have a "problem". We never gave special treatment to my stepson where as other folks on the outside who didn't understand autism wanted treat him as if he was disabled and baby him. When he could do anything just as well as any other child. Their brain just processes things differently. Never underestimate children, with or without autism or any other disorder that folks love to label individuals with. I do find it interesting that you call yourself an "autism mom". I never labeled myself in that way...for one, it just draws attention. Negative attention I would think. No offense, but Why not just be a "mom". As a mom we all have challenges. I know exactly what it is to raise a child with special needs and the struggle of finding that support within the school system and just the outside world. I think it's great that you've found support and all the things you are doing to educate yourself and others. My stepson was nonverbal for the first five years of his life but with the right specialists, programs and my husband's and my love, attention, patience and support we gave to him, he flourished. To see him today, you wouldn't guess that he has autism. There are only those one or two specific traits he still displays that one would know ...only if they've been around someone with autism. I usually never comment on videos but thought I would today. Thanks for sharing this private and personal part of your life. You are an exceptional mom to Anne and she is blessed to have you and your family who care so much for her. Just as I know you feel blessed having her as your precious little girl ❤️

My children haven't had an autism diagnosis so I can't speak from a space of knowing. However, I don't feel the need to explain or apologize for my children. Sometimes my kids don't want to speak because they're tired or teething or just not in the mood. Just like I have boundaries, I honor their personal boundaries as well. If they don't feel like speaking, they just don't. I don't think of it as rude (as some people will) because they can't communicate in the "formal" or "traditional" way. So to say "Speak when spoken to", imo, doesn't apply when speaking isn't their main form of communication right now (they're 18 mos). It's a little tough to explain this concept via text but my main point is that I don't think there's a need to explain why a child isn't speaking - it's no one's business. Similar when a man tells a woman "Smile". F$ck off. 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ ....and I'm sorry, if someone kept pushing my child to speak when it was clear that they don't want to speak, I would say, "Thats enough" very politely and keep walking. Just like if someone were pushing for a hug or a kiss. No is no. No further explanation needed.

It’s so hard trying to figure out if I should disclose if my daughter has autism in public as well. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t now that she is getting older(4 years) I find it difficult to explain to children because kids want to play with her all the time and they don’t understand how she plays. But that’s just apart of a autism mommy. I believe it gets easier as they get older because they understand more. You got this! She has you for a reason❤️

She wants to play with them but doesn’t no how to invite other to play with her yet so sometimes she gets frustrated or she’ll just play by herself most of time. It’s hard I’m hoping she will have a best friend soon that she can play with because she is my only and all her cousins live in another state.

Honneeeyyyy!!! I have two in ABA and when they do things that other people deem as normal and we're super excited because it's a huge milestone for them and we wanna throw a party!!! I get it!!!! I'm so excited when my two year old is using two and three word sentences and my five year old is using any words at all!!! I have to constantly explain to people that he's not flipping people off because he flaps and stims a lot and he postures with his middle fingers. He's being more compliant in ABA now so that's a plus. They both break EVERY toy they get. And the five year old attention seeks like nobody's business. It's tough. But we're blessed no less. I'm gonna tag you in a video of them playing together with a broke piece of toy as a comb. So cute. Thank you so much Vaughn. This means so MUCH!!!! 💕💕💕

It gives me another view on what my parents of children with autism go through on the daily.

I've said this before in other videos for other reasons but it's worth stating again b/c you continue to prove over and over again that you're just simply amazing ... all around ... as a woman, a wife, a mom, a sister, a daughter, a friend, an influencer, in every aspect of life ... it's just who you are. In a future video, do you mind discussing some of the initial signs that alerted you to seek medical answers? I've read that early diagnosis can help tremendously with development. The fact that you noticed some things before Anne was 1, without having any other kids around to compare her to, is remarkably intuitive. I have a couple of friends who have kids with autism and I don't recall that either was able to pick up the signs so early.

I know you didn't address this to me but I'm a teacher who has had to talk to parents about what I see in the class as well as the step mom of an autistic child who is now 7. This isn't in all cases but in my experience verbal delays, not making eye contact, socially awkward with peers, overly obsessed with a particular object, and many can be extremely intelligent in a particular subject or in the arts. When I taught kindergarten, I had an autistic student who read near a 3rd grade level, but he struggled socially and had a hard time transitioning from one thing to another. Hopefully, Vaughn can add to this.

Oh and I noticed it in my husband's daughter when she was about 3/4. She never made eye contact and expressed herself via grunts and screams. Also, she was extremely sensitive to noise like the hand dryer in restrooms, vacuums, ect. and was a VERY picky eater. We're talking more than the norm for a child. She was obsessed with Mickey and electronics. I hope this helps.

@@ltarleton7527 Thank you for your response, truly appreciated. I can totally see how the signs become more obvious the older a child gets, especially at that age where you expect communication. I believe this is where my friends noticed their something in their kids as well. Vaughn was able to discern before Anne was 1, I'm not sure I'd even know what to look for at that age. Now that you've mentioned eye contact, I can see that one.

For my daughter, she was around 1 when we knew. She was diagnosed with ASD a year later. She wasn’t imitating speech, she wouldn’t respond to her name. She would do repetitive things like open all the cabinets in the kitchen, would not play with toys, extremely sensitive to sounds/noise...

@@Titus2Chic you are welcome. Unfortunately, I wasn't around my stepdaughter until this age when my husband and I started dating and of course with school not until 5. Someone else responded about the eye contact and sensitivity to noise at age 1. There are also many books and articles if you suspect a child is autistic. I always say, if you suspect anything, take your child to the doctor. Again, I hope this helps you. It's so great to be able to inquire and learn on this platform. 😊

I'm a retired speech language therapist and I am so excited to see that play center. When I began my career, the Jose P law had just been enacted. Before then, children with disabilities weren't entitled to be educated, and for all but the wealthy, there was no options available for parents. It's a joy to watch Anne smiling and engaging while playing. You are an awesome parent. It's a learning process. Don't be afraid to gently educate people about Anne. You don't have to go into details but simply thank them for their interest and compliments on behalf of your daughter. One thing that I have learned about children on the spectrum is that failure to respond doesn't allows mean failure in awareness. I suggest that you read up on Temple Grandin (if you haven't already done so), who is a person with Autism and a wonderful voice for those living with Autism.

Watching vlogs like this brings back memories💓. My son used to scream when cashiers or waitresses would say "Hi!" to him😂 It was soo embarrassing, but I never let it stop me from taking him out to eat, or to go grocery shopping. Now he won't stop saying "Hi!!!" to people 😂 I used to get so anxious when we would go to the park, because I knew the other kids were gonna ask him why he doesn't talk or be confused when he can't keep up with the games they're playing because it involves following directions and role playing. Now instead of being anxious at the playground, I just keep a watchful eye and let him enjoy his life😊 I used to make him stop stimming in public because I hated when people would look at him while he was doing it or ask, "what's that sound?!" when he would vocal stim. Now when he stims in public, I don't even bat an eye. BUT, I will give a stink eye to people who gawk or try to laugh at him.💁🏿 Being a shy, introverted person, I hated getting unwanted attention, but because of my son being autistic, I have grown soo much! And in ways I'd never imagine💓 Some days are hard, but being an Autism mom is definitely worth it.

My 3 year old is non verbal as well and I politely tell people my daughter has autism to prevent any meltdowns. My 7 year old is also autistic but she’s high functioning and can be overly excited or too friendly. I have to explain to others as well. It’s a process but the girl’s therapist gives us cards to carry just in case we cannot explain. I totally understand. 💙

Hey, there Ms.Vaughn love your go it attitude you have for taking care of your daughter Anne. Your patience you have for your child is awesome. I know it took time for you to have this type drive in you. Your mother is such a blessing to your daughter Anne. The way she interact with Anne is incredible. Then your sister came along with you and Anne to the kids play gym for Autism and that was so cool. I see some growth in your child and I'm praying that Anne will continue to make great progress this year. Ms.Vaughn keep your spirits up and continue to have hope in Anne will talk more and understand things as she gets older. My neighbors next door son has Autism and just like Anne he didn't start talking until he was 4 or 5 yrs old. He didn't talk a lot at the time but over the years he speaks now. That was years ago now he's 15 years old and he's taking driving lessons with his dad. He helps with the yard work...yes, girl he cuts the grass and does the neighbors next door grass too. So, what I am trying to say is children with Autism do grow out of the things they go thru but, it takes therapy, time, patience and lots of prayer. I really enjoy talking to the young teen next door and he is so polite and respectful towards adults. Been to his birthday party and I had a wonderful time with his family and friends. His parents was surprised I came but, I been around children with different way (inability) of doing things growing up as a child. So, now all this is nothing new for me. Growing up my parents didn't shield me and my older siblings from playing with kids who were a little different than us. So, happy Anne is making great progress. Take care Ms.Vaughan and be blessed. 😃😃😃👏👏🙏🙏💖💖💖 P.S. I hope this message gives you some inspiration to dream that one day Anne will do great things in her life. 👍👍😇😇

I'm an autism mommy. My son is 22, some days I disclose other days I don't. He is verbal but may have difficulty expressing himself. Hats off to you and the entire family, it helps when everyone is onboard. My children help out tremendously. We all make the sacrifices to ensure his care because I don't trust anyone with him my husband is ALL about that baby just like yours. I love that you're sharing this because it's hard no matter where they are on the spectrum! Go Anne! P.s I hollered when I saw that little hand stick out and that cap hit the ground. Anne said you can keep the cap just ride me momma😂

HELLO VAUGHN, I’m and Autism Mom also I can relate to the people in public places talking to your child and your child not responding. It takes everything out of you not to tell them they have Autism. Yes I have been there too so I can relate. My son is older than Ann and he has improved greatly, so I know with prayer, you, therapy, and your support system those verbal skills will improve tremendously as she gets older. Other parents would look at me crazy or sideways when I told them my son said a word. They would look at me like “it’s just a word” But to me it feels like I have hit the lottery. So yes get excited about her calling you mommy and all the other milestones she is going to overcome. Your a great mom doing a great job with Ann and kiddos to your mom for being a loving, supportive and great person to all of you. God Bless #AutismMomsRock

Aaaawww! I feel so proud of you and Anne. My heart is so full that she called you mom. I LOVE the Colorwheel Playhouse!!! It looks very similar to the sensory room in the school where I teach. I wish we had one in my city. The number of children with Autism has skyrocketed here. I'm a teacher in an Inclusion school and this will be my 5th year as a teacher of students with Autism. I would love to take them here bc some our field trips don't meet their social/environmental needs. The number of autism centers needed within our public schools has hit an all time high, so that now schools are moving toward inclusion in my city. It's common on the East Coast, everyone else is catching on.

Y'all are incredible parents to Anne & have a good support system! Anne seem to try new things & at the same time do what toddlers do, tear up a room.😅🤩💖 Early intervention makes a difference. My grandson graduated this year to High School & early intervention made remarkable areas in his life. His vocabulary... is amazing, always melts me when we talk on the phone. He lives in a different state. When he was about 3 years old I introduced him to games to his liking on a computer, today he's tech savvy. The teachers were surprised he was advanced technically. I don't believe in saying what a child can't do without them trying, but maybe later when their ready.

Autism has different levels. My son is on a high spectrum. He is non-verbal, very destructive, doesn't sleep, wears pampers 24/7, which needs to be changed 7-10 times a day no matter where he is. He is almost six and you can imagine the level of stress on the family. He has an older sister who is going to be 10 in a couple of months. We are all carers in the house. As a father, I love him a lot and pray and cry for him all the time. There are things I wish we could do together which are not possible. Is like my whole world did not only stop but is upside down. I struggle to focus at work or go for trainings to enhance my career. It is really difficult, only someone who is experiencing it can relate. Our marriage is suffering as well as there is hardly any time to relax as a couple.

New autism mom here, our son was officially diagnosed a few months ago. My sister in law, recommended I watch your channel. Thank you for sharing this experience, because one thing I've noticed ( people don't talk about), I often times feel lonely in this new experience. It's refreshing to see someone sharing about many similar experiences we go through with our son (now 3 yrs old). I recently had a similar encounter while out and like Anne people (including kids) come up to our son and want to speak/engage with him. He is also nonverbal, and I fight the urge to share about his diagnosis for better understanding on their part. I know this is an old video, but what do you do when people try to speak with her today? I struggle with this often, because our son is a little cutey 😊 and people want to speak with him. I truly want to use these moments for awareness and to educate, but don't know what/how to say...please share your thoughts. Again, THANK YOU for sharing!

MsVaughn I have a couple of family members who are now functioning adults that have autism. I helped raise my nephew and we just kept talking and stimulating him. He eventually became his own person and works. My cousin also has it and with therapy she now sales jewelry and work a full time job. I hope this encourages you. Keep going. They definitely now show love in their own way.

That was our biggest fear when we first got diagnosis, Jase not answering people or responding like other children to hello and other social cues. We, well mainly me would tell people that he was on the spectrum. Some understand, some don't. My husband did not tell people and would just say he was tired or not interested. Now at age 8 he speaks to everyone, introduces himself and everything. Progress is always out goal and the smaller the accomplishments that more excited we are. Awesome job mommy!
