Decreasing the symptoms and suffering of children with Autism is the goal of this video. Improving an ASD symptom score by even 10% can make all the difference for some families. This video discussed research showing that changes in diet can lead to a significant improvement in ASD symptoms.
Autistic children often have trouble adjusting to new food flavors and textures. This is one of the few times I recommend Keto shakes & soups to use as you transition them to a keto diet. Keto Chow has a large assortment of flavors and very clean ingredients.

Raised mostly vegetarian, I always had gut issues and mental hellth issues. For 25 years I sought help, to no avail. Diagnosed bipolar, I tried all the meds, to no avail. 2.5 years ago, I heard Amber O'Hearn and Mikhaila Peterson both mention that their mood disorders improved on a carnivore diet, and I switched immediately. It was shortly after that that I finally figured out that what I'd been struggling with all my life was ASD. Indeed, my moods have calmed down, my body feels good, and I have become relatively functional and relatively happy. Well into my 40's, I feel like I am at the beginning of my life. Thank God I didn't kill myself. Over the years, not a single professional mentioned diet. Thank God it is in our awareness these days.

I have been living with an ASD child for 15 years. ASD kids often eat only 5 to 10 foods. AS they age they become more and more defficient in minerals and vitamins they need to develop. I encourage you strongly to avoid all the highly processed carbs with soy products in them. We put our whole family including our ASD son on a keto diet in May. The changes are amazing. He has better focus and less tantrums. He actually told me that he prefers this way of eating. If your child is only going to eat 5-10 foods, make sure half of them are meat, eggs, and cheese.

Hey... As an adult diagnosed with Aspergers (almost 20 years ago now) I find this video intriguing. Having started Keto around four months ago, trying something with what was apparently a lot of sugar in it brought back some unpleasant traits that lasted for a number of hours. Not fun. I did find the medical language a little jarring: since ASD is a lifelong disorder (which in itself is jarring, who wants something that makes up part of their personality to be discribed as ‘disordered’?) traits feels better than symptoms. For me, the references to little ones made it seem like adults were excluded completely from consideration, which is sad. The effects on children are hugely important, but those same children become teenagers and then adults and will still have ASD, and will still need the benefit of the Keto lifestyle... thanks for covering the benefits though, it’s good to have the links and other information. There was a lot that was new to me.

Anything that is different mainstream will always label as a disorder. God knows we can't be normal! LOL! It is frustrating, but I think that mainstream could learn a lot from autism Spectrum people! Long before any healthcare person started to recognize in me ASD a young child with non verbal ASD saw it in me and I was the only adult she totally connected with. She saw it less than 5 minutes. Interesting enough, she had never said mommy or daddy, but saw me in a park one day and yelled my name out across the whole park! She knew me and my name. She knew a lot more obviously that she wasn't speaking, but she knew I was more like her.

As a fellow late-diagnosed Aspie who has a daughter with Autism, I slightly disagree; the "disordered" behaviors are those that cause undue difficulty and limit one's ability to develop. I don't think anyone would argue that being nonverbal would be considered a "trait" rather than a disorder. Likewise the inability to understand facial expressions and body language or difficulty concentrating in active environments (over-stimulation) can only be described as a "disorder." On the other hand, the way my Aspie brain works now that I've learned my "workarounds" are absolutely advantageous and have given me abilities that most other people can't even understand (see Temple Grandin's visual/sensory talks for examples).

@@cassandraotroy6325 I know you made the comment one year ago, but autism is caused by too much serotonin. The media has confused people and told them that serotonin is the happy hormone, it's not. Too much serotonin causes autistic behaviour, lowering it will help autism. It's part of the reason people on keto feel better, because starchy carbohydrates raise tryptophan in the brain and convert into serotonin. Fructose doesn't have the same impact on insulin, and fructose binds to tryptophan and lowers your serotonin levels. So a keto diet with some fruit on the side could help

I am 60 years old Autistic and normal birth. Fortunately, as a child my parents were not aware because girls were not Autistic. However, even though I have learning difficulties, dyspraxia, speech difficulties, chronic anxiety and ADHD, I was treated the same as my siblings and in an era when food was homecooked. All of us were weaned onto whatever meal our parents were having e.g usually meat and veg, fish and veg, eggs etc which was moulered into baby food. As toddlers we had child size plates and utensils and had to eat at the table as a family. We were not given a choice of what to eat. We all ate the same meal even though I was not fussed on meat or fish, I had to try whatever was placed in front of me. I did not starve or die. Luckily then there were no McDonald's or fast food takeaways (not that my parents would have fed us those foods if available). We only had treats on weekends and sugary foods were limited. Breakfast was boiled eggs and soldiers or porridge. We ate a lot of sardines lol because as now fish was expensive. We were bought doing things such as jigsaws, complicated puzzles, word games, plasticine, solving problems, art colouring books, large rolls of paper, reading and encouraged to create things out of household things. If we had pets we were responsible for their care. We had chores regardless of age. My father took us on very, very long walks with the dog so that mum could do her chores (he did long shift work). We all had bikes (Dad recycled old ones for our Christmas presents). We were all encouraged to have hobbies and as I was obsessed with water, I went to swimming club and we children also went swimming on the weekend in summer holidays. I was obsessed with gymnastics but wrong build, but encouraged to go anyway. I loved it. I also did Judo. I did not go to these clubs to make friends, I was only interested in my sport and no one questioned it. I was allowed to be me. Also, I was told that they did this because, in my mother's words "If you were quiet, I had to have eyes in the back of my head". I was like a little pocket rocket filled with nuts and bolts. All these aforementioned activities require focus, concentration and also used up a lot of energy. However, my sleep was still poor, but with structure and set bedtimes, I was sent to bed at a sensible time in relation to my age. There was no tabtrums or bargaining because my parents would not tolerate it and we had timeout to think about our actions and consequences was mandatory. We were not sent to our room where we could play with our toys, we remained in the same room as everyone else. Tv was also limited back then but given all the above we had plenty to occupy ourselves. I especially loved anything I had to focus on and solve the problems which meant that I was very calm, quiet and relaxed most of the time, and the rest of the time my energy was used up with cycling, swimming, gymnastics and Judo. I think that what the Dr says about food for Autism is good. Not a cure. I would not be me. I do not want to be like neurotypicals they frighten me. I wss told my empathy is greater than neurotypicals and this causes a great deal of distress. I do not understand their motives or intentions. I think that for most Autistic children now the modern world is too fast, noisy and unstructured. In all honesty, I love video games but I know I would be addicted so I do not have a game station because I would do nothing else and my poor dog would never see daylight lol I listen to Audiobooks at night to help with sleep problems. Does not always work. I have about 3-4 hours sleep or none at all and crash. As an adult I love walking my dog 3-4 miles a day. Swimming is too noisy now and people are very rude. I do not like eating out because the food is tasteless, too sweet and salty. I do not like fast food or takeaways, but absolutely love homecoked traditional meals. I do not eat gluten and only have treats on weekends. I definitely think structure, lots if exercise and things that require a lot of ficus and attention is very helpful. Hope this is helpful.

We eat salmon, sardines, mussels, quinoa, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc. We are gluten intolerant too. We do not eat lots sugar. We have treat on weekends like when we was children. We like to research too what in food and what is good for mind and joints etc and since children always exercised. I did gymnastics, swimming, judo because I had lots energy and only sleep couple of hours. Still exercise. Walk our dog long, long walks because love nature and animals so much it is heaven.

I am a female diagnosed on Feb. 1, 2020 with ASD at the age of 51, my life and health changed for the better as finally I was able to do what was right for me. I had already started doing keto and IF in late 2019 instinctively, and quickly noticed positive changes, especially in my digestion and concentration. I have always been HYPER sensitive to light, noise, things on my skin, odors, emotions, medications, and especially the food I ate. Now, after watching this (yet another!) great video from Dr. Berry, so much more makes sense to me. I was put up for adoption at birth, so no breast milk for me! As a kid, I preferred meat and veggies over grains; and I craved fats, such as avocado, olives, butter, fatty meats and fish, cheese, salad dressing, and full-fat dairy products. Although I did love bread, it really only acted as a vessel to pile butter, cream cheese, olive oil, or peanut butter on to get the fat I craved. My parents (may they rest in peace) actually did me more harm than good, unbeknownst to them. On the weekends when I visited my adoptive father, he fed me a ton of whole grains and legumes, low fat/trimmed meats, fat-free dairy and salad dressing, cereals, and a lot of fruit. During the week when I was with my adoptive mother, I was able to get fatty meats and a ton of veggies with real butter, but my mom was a bake-o-holic. There were always fresh cookies, cakes, fudge, and the like when I got home from school, so you can see the problems with that. And having ASD as a kid and not knowing it, never fitting in, getting bullied all of the time, and just not understanding why, I was very overweight to boot. *Sigh* Eventually, at the young age of 13, I was diagnosed with IBS. That doctor told me to eat more whole grains and fruit! Obviously this was decades before Dr. Berry's book "Lies My Doctor Told Me" came out! (BTW - If you have not read this book - it is a must! During COVID, I am sure many folks have the time to read it. Also, it makes a great holiday gift for those you care about.) Anyway, in my experience, I have 51 years to look back on and see what did not work for me, which was pretty much everything our current "food pyramid" suggests we eat. Blech! I am now able to do a 3-day water fast or a 5-day bone broth fast without feeling hungry. I do not do IF or these 3- or 5-day fasts to lose weight - I do them to reverse the damage of the foods and medications that have wreaked havoc on my body for a half of a century. I have lost significant weight on keto as I am no longer obese, but I do keto for overall health - the rest of the weight will come off in time. But the BEST thing for me so far with keto is that the environmental sensitivities I experience with ASD don't seem to put me over the edge as much and I have fewer meltdowns. Also, I can sleep better without nightmares. Keto for me has been life-changing! Dr, Berry, it was one of your videos that got me to try keto a year ago. I thank you immensely for posting your videos! You are my Health Care Hero on KZbin!

I’d love to put her on a 30 day carnivore diet but my wife will have nothing of it. Thinks she needs more veggies to help her constipation (11 years old). Typical of many fathers out there we are treated like dumbasses when it comes to our childrenshealth . Does Your perspective see if I can make a difference by following something like this?

@@glorias4462 Low carb did a huge difference for me. And that’s what I was doing when I wrote this comment a year ago. But now I have moved on to only eating animal products, dairy very rarely, heavy cream, sour cream and cheese occasionally. Some spices ands herbs sometimes if my company really wants us to eat the same food, but mostly salt. Only drink water and one big mug of coffee in the morning. Often I eat ground beef, bacon, eggs and butter. This way of eating suits my autistic traits perfectly! It’s not much variety, which is huge plus for me, decisions are minimized and I rarely get bored with sameness :) The benefits have been great, I feel much more alive and have an easier time socializing, even though it’s not my favorite thing to do, my concentration is improved as with low carb. And the fact that I don’t binge eat or have cravings anymore is fantastic! On low carb I still snacked a lot in the evenings and was a bit obsessive with some foods, guess it was emotional eating, that is now gone because I eat to absolute satiety on meat and fat.

My nephew-in-law has two little boys five yrs old and under who are both autistic. Both born vaginally, they have two half siblings, through the mother who are fine. I believe it’s it genetic, as they have a cousin who was DXed as being on the Spectrum. Mom was commenting that it was very embarrassing if they had melt downs in public. Not all autism situations are fully genetic. I'd bet that the crappy diet the last 3 or 4 generations, leading to possible issues in the DNA and genetics, that only compound more, further down the line, due to continuously eating garbage, and even eating worse than the generation before us, is partly to blame for "genetic". I think that is the groundwork for these genetic issues. I've had many get upset with me, because they feel it's an attack on them, when I point out diet. I have tourette's and so does my 12 yr old. I also had a lot of the symptoms of high functioning autism. 2 of my boys are diagnosed as high functioning. My oldest has tics also. As long as I stick with keto and fasting, I do much better. I no longer have to spend a fortune on supplements for myself. I still give amazing supplements to my children that help also, because they still come into contact with junk at school and other people's houses.

Can you give the parents a honeymoon vacation and have the little one visit for a week and try preparing some keto foods in different ways like burgers? If she likes pizza maybe it's the cheese she likes. Eggs and sausage? Does anybody not like that???? Try the cauliflower crust keto pizza with veggies hiding on it. (a bit of a pain to make but this pizza addict managed to make the shift and I love it because it still has that greasy cheesy meaty flavor that I love. Best of luck - it seems a crime for parents to not take responsibility for their childs' diet.

They certainly celebrate their Autistic culture and wouldn’t want it to be talked about as something problematic or to be ‘cured’ is an albiest fashion. Having said that, of course all our children need fabulous nutrition starting with breastfeeding and especially those who are neurodiverse so their sensitive nervous systems can be supported and allow them to be their best Autistic selves and getting information to parents and educators about the proper human diet is key. Some great information here on things that can really support our children’s health but it’s really important people don’t parent shame. Not only do many parents not know this information but Autistic people have many complex challenges with food such as sensory sensitivities & anxiety around food that must be balanced as part of a big picture to reach a balance that works for them and doesn’t cause food aversions further down the line.

It was made a law in 1996 that grains have to be enriched. This means synthetic folate which competes for receptor sites with methylfolate slowing methylation further. Only organic grains are exempt from being enriched. Also choline is necessary for methylation. You can take all the B vitamins you want but without choline it just isn't going to work. Interesting. I watched The Magic Pill documentary. Great benefits from keto diet for autistic child. Just recently I watched Nina Teicholz mention B12 deficiency symptoms looks very much like some autism symptoms. Wondering if you found any research on that and if vegan or vegetarian women have a higher percentage of autistic babies. Agree, more research needs to be done. Thank you for all you do.

My son (5 yold) was diagnosed with level 2 autism (australia). I have followed a ketogenic diet for almost 3 years now and have seen an improvement in my health and thought perhaps it would be beneficial for children with autism. I asked my paediatrician about any dietary changes and he said flatly no. Most advice he provides is through prescription drugs to modify his behaviours. Many of the drugs have adverse side effects.

The reason the carnivore diet helps with autism and adhd has to do with insulin, let me explain: Autism is linked to high serotonin levels, lowering your serotonin levels will help you if you have autism. When you eat highly insulin stimulating foods (rice, pasta, bread) it pulls all the amino acids out of your brain, apart from tryptophan, tryptophan converts into serotonin, leaving you with an excess of serotonin and a lack of dopamine. When you don't stimulate insulin, your brain is able to pull the other amino acids in (tyrosine, phenylalanine and ect) and those are the amino acids that help you maintain high energy and focus, and when you eat lots of animal foods, you have an abundance of those easily absorbable amino acids. Those amino acids compete with tryptophan, so you end up with lower serotonin levels as a result. And lowering serotonin always leads to an increase in dopamine, which= High focus, good energy, yay I no longer need coffee, because coffee lowers serotonin aswell, same mechanism. So it also improves adhd. Carnivore diet=natural coffee=more discipline and self control=better behaviour Eating some fruit would not really bother you compared to starches though, fructose is slightly different than glucose, but too much fructose can lead to attention issues aswell (hyperactive foraging response)

My granddaughter has had symptoms of autism since birth, but diagnosed when started kindergarten. She is a food phobic child and will not cooperate with eating properly, but has had some therapy for that and has improved, but my daughter doesn't really try to get her over to a real keto diet. Fortunately my daughter is eating keto and losing weight and feeling better. Hopefully she will be able to continue to gradually change her over to keto. Husband is not on board and is on the spectrum as well, and his daughter is also on the spectrum. They are very adverse to eating any differently. His daughter eats lots of sugar and grains. My younger granddaughter seems to be helped with her melt downs and anger outbreaks using a psychosis drug. I think it is the easiest road for them at this point. I get sad about it though because as the grandma I can only say or do nothing about it.

Have you seen the movie The Magic Pill? You can find the full movie here on KZbin. It’s a documentary about keto and one of the families featured in the movie has a daughter with ASD. Her improvement during the course of the filming is astounding. When they changed their lifestyle she did not want to eat what they had and major kudos to the parents because they pushed through the tantrums and fits and she wouldn’t eat anything for five days, but after the 5th day she ate whatever they put in front of her. I highly recommend the movie. Probably the best documentary on keto I’ve seen

@@israelibyheart Yep, I was like that as a kid and as an adult to be honest! I was labeled as just being a picky eater, but now I am realizing as my docs are starting to look at ASD that I wasn't just a picky eater there was more to it. I would sit at the table for hours refusing to eat a brussels sprout or whatever they wanted me to eat. I never actually ate it either because they never managed to wait me out.

@@israelibyheart Yes, I watched it with zeal and my daughter and her husband watched it. They decided they did not want to handle their child in the same way as they did in the movie. I was very disappointed to hear that, but it is their responsibility and they are trying to do the best they can under their circumstances, however had I been the parent, I would have tried it the way they did in the documentary. Sometimes, no matter how much we want to help, we just have to step back and let them do what they do.

Think how kids would be on Carnivore. I am an angry woman, hyper, brain feels as though it is racing if I eat any carbs, sugars. If I eat Carnivore - I feel so calm and together. 53 now - suffered my entire life. Now I have my life back. So please give your kids more meat, more animal fat, more eggs, more home made bone broth. Sadly Keto way of eating is high in oxalates - so I wish Dr Berry would acknowledge this - because if a parent starts making things with almond flour etc - this is oxalates. I now know that my health and brain was destroyed from oxalates - once I learnt about oxalates I realise my entire way of eating for 20+ years was a daily toxic dose of oxalates. Thank you to Sally K Norton and Elliot Overton for helping me learn about this.

Proper birth and proper human breast feeding is healthy (either by biological mother or another lady if the mother isnt capable of breast feeding), I think that should be supported and all mothers informed. Best wishes to you and your kids.

THANK YOU for talking about autism! My son was born normally, breastfed, and had classic symptoms of autism that went undiagnosed until he was 5. At this point we put him on DAN protocol which cuts back sugar and cuts out gluten and dairy. Pumped him FULL of supplements including 2 kinds of carnitine and detoxed him for arsenic, lead, and mercury. After 10 years on that diet he had improved a ton: began being able to do school work after about 3 years and wanted to be social a few years after that. Seemed to plateau after about 8 years or so because we were still eating grains, nuts, and bad fats. Whole family went low carb/high good fats 2 years ago with 16/8 intermittent fasting plan and my son improved some more. He's 18 now: seems ok with butter, a little cheese and cream. Can play piano, draw incredibly detailed pictures, do basic math, spell, and read. Oxalytes in nuts seem to cause stimming. Am trying wheatgrass juice powder with him now and wondering about a low grade viral infection such as might occur with fibromyalgia or Lyme's. Long journey but worth it and it probably would have been shorter if we'd known to do keto FIRST!

Keep trying with the carnivore foods! Offer eggs cooked in every way, fried over easy is our favorite, ground beef is easiest for us, and goat cheese. So yes soft creamy foods are our favorites. Smoothies can be with bone broth protein powder, and snacks can be meat sticks, cheese, seaweed for iodine, or smoked salmon sticks. I have a picky eater, but he’s eating these foods instead of French fries , ketchup, and chilli. So it is possible to get them on a healthy diet, it just takes patience and trying out different snacks and cooking simple means. Bison lamb and beef all come ground. It’s so easy! Sausages are a favorite too non preserved.

You read my mind, I wanted to ask you about this! Didn't really know how to, but wanted to! LOL I grew up a bit strange. I was bullied horrifically by not only the kids in school but also the teachers. I am 56 years old. I have a condition called Albinism (although I don't have pink eyes as that is a myth that we all have pink eyes) and I just didn't connect with the kids at all and I say shit in the most blunt way imaginable, but don't know that it came out bluntly. I am clumsy as all hell and have even had to have a service dog to keep me upright. When I was 30 I was diagnosed with ADHD and now they are thinking I have Asperger's or high functioning autism. It actually makes sense! It would also explain the horrific bullying between the Albinism (for those of you that don't know what that is, you have heard us called Albino's. Don't call us that! It's rude!) and Asperger's and who knows if I actually have ADHD because it could just be the Asperger's. Obviously, breast milk is a little late now, although I can confirm that I was bottle fed. Also from what I have been reading science seems to be starting to tie Albinism together with Asperger's, but I didn't dig into that as deeply as I normally would deep dive a topic. I guess it is common along with the other issues like eyes and stuff a lot of us with Albinism also have Asperger's. So I was carnivore for about two years, when I got off track. I just wasn't feeling good and I moved at the same time 3000 miles. I am back on my Carnivore, and the Doctors are also trying to get my TSH down into a healthy range (it's going the wrong way though even with medicine). So I am a bit of a mess right now, but answers sure are nice! I will be staying on Carnivore or at least Ketovore now for the rest of my life as it will help with both my thyroid issues and the Asperger's. They did find a medicine that keeps me calm though, but I would love to be able to get off of that! Because of my hypothyroidism even though I was eating carnivore before I wasn't experiencing the calming effect of the anxiety before. A lot to process I tell you, but at least now I know I can find the right help.

It is technically not a diet although Dr. Nemechek does say to try to avoid the bad vegetable oils and some other things. The best protocol for autism out there that I know of. Our son is getting way better and there has been story after story of total recovery. Not that every kid will be recovered but oh man, so far our son actually sleeps well, poops well, is starting to copy a little, and is more social.
