But autism burnout symptoms for those who do not know is a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by heightened stress usually occurring from life transitions or prolonged amounts of stress. Autistic Burnout can happen at any age of an autistic person's life and can impact a person's executive functioning and more.
Depression is a mental health issue where a person feels sad or feeling down for extensive periods of time which can affect autistic people also. For more information, use my references below.

I agree, autistic burnout and depression are two different things. I find, at least personally, that if I'm going through prolonged autistic burnout it will lead to depression. It's sometimes hard to tell when this transition happens. Very similar indeed!

Same here. My autistic burnouts always result in a depressive episode. I‘ve gone through it so many times that I can clearly determine now when the transition begins.

In the summer of 2019 I suffered a severe few months of depression/anxiety which lead to an awful burnout. I was so worried, I thought I had Alzheimer’s or something else along the lines, it was horrible, the worst few months of my life. I even considered ending it all at one point. I’m so glad I’m not at that point anymore and I’m so much happier now

For me burnout feels like a literal mental block. Like I cant reach the right parts of my brain.. I want to, I know I can, i just cant seem to do. Its very frustrating and I get mad a lot more. With depression it's just like my brain shrank and shrivelled. Almost like being dehydrated, I want to want to fix the problem, drink some water, but I cant figure out I'm thirsty cause the brain is all shrivelled up and dry which just makes it worse. I cant even get mad anymore, I just cry. I feel like you can do something about a burnout, address your needs and maybe have someone help you out a bit with awareness of those needs. Whereas with depression you just wanna isolate and it feels like nothing will make you feel even a bit better

Thank you for distinguishing both. Very helpful for me to know the difference as my eldest is autistic & I’m being assessed. It’s been confusing trying to separate as we both have depression/anxiety too! Take care ☺️

This is a great video! I agree with you that they are two separate things. I went through a long stretch of burnout (6 months) last year that I believe contributed to a bout of depression following the burnout. I really appreciate your content! 🌻

@@ReiverBlue1971 not really haha. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at age 7 (my mom NEVER told me or did anything about it). But yeah, it's kind of just like: oh, you have this condition and that is all, good luck 🙃

Depression doesn't even have to be caused by a life event, it can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Ex: Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder.

Uummm, didn't get the email marking a new post again, YT's definitely up to something. I have dealt with depression for well over 20 years now, been on just about every SSRI and a few NSRIs too, six rounds of CBT and these were bound to fail as the cause of my depression is my enforced masking over decades. As yet (since the discovery of my true nature ie ASD) it hasn't been able to respond to the change so far but I'm sure it will. As to the differences between them (if they aren't one and the same but for different causes) that's quite a difficult one to judge. They are almost identical with the cognitive element (executive function) being the true difference between the two. I find it A LOT harder to think and make decisions in burnout (as I become even more obviously autistic) and have extreme difficulty making informed decisions, even on stuff I do every day. It's a difficult one as I'm never truly out of my depression when I also get burnout. Staggeringly close though and, like everything else with the spectrum, I suspect it varies a lot from person to person. All that being said, burnout (for me) doesn't have the sucking dark maw inside that pulls in everything that is you, leaving you left with nothing

Hi I just found your channel! Me and my parents have always thought I have Autism. I recently went to try and get a diagnosis and got Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety, and Depression. I can't help but feel that there is much more to it then that. I have every symptom of Autism as far as I know. I want to get a second opinion but my parents won't do that right now. I am on the "higher functioning" side so it makes sense if it is hard to diagnose me with it. If anyone else has Autism and got misdiagnosed in the past please tell me your experience because I'm very confused and overwhelmed with my mental health right now.

Is it possible that after you experience stress for a long time that you get numb to it, even as an autistic person?

I'm researching on ADHD and autism but the symptoms are confusing because they are similar. I actually believe that I was wrongfully diagnosed with autism but is ADHD. That's why I'm researching to get it squared away. I am also trying to get enlisted too. I used to get stressed a lot and it definitely showed then. Not so much anymore since I was exposed to stress a lot thanks to family dysfunction.
