Id say they're not incapable of anything. But I have grown up with my non-verbal autisic brother my entirely life. There is no chance he would be able to be in a movie. A documentary sure, but not the kind of movie Sia is trying to make. Im glad she is wanting to showcase this part of the spectrum however I'm very nervous the work has not been put in. 😔

May I ask how it's offensive, when there are some autistic people who are high on the spectrum who do act very similar to that? I genuinely want to know. I don't think it's mockery if your intent is serious and well meaning. It is mockery If you're going around dancing and making expressions to make people laugh. It's called acting. People are hired and paid to act. Though I do understand why people are upset, as people like to use the disabled as inspiration p0rn, and there should be more positive representation of them, but no one said anything about previous movies about disabled people up until now. So I'd like to hear everyone who has an issue with this movie, I'd like to hear their thoughts on previous films about disabled people.

I feel like her reasoning behind choosing a neurotypical hurt the community more because 1. It was obvious that Maddie was chosen beforehand 2. The fact that she played it off as if the original girl she cast had a “difficult” time is EXACTLY THE POINT 3. Pushing through that so called difficulty would have highlighted so many important things in the daily struggles people with autism go through 4. She could’ve learned so much empathy and understanding of the realities of autism that would’ve been imparted through the movie if she went with someone who TRULY UNDERSTOOD

I really want the actor that she “almost” hired to come out and speak about this.. I think it’s absolutely: ridiculous, lazy, and incredibly ableist that she made an executive decision like that.. she could’ve found SOMEONE autistic to fill in this role. Or spoken more with non verbal autistic people to see their opinion on the matter of someone with lower support needs representing them in a movie over a neurotypical girl. She really should’ve known to put more thought into this, this is delicate subject matter that she doesn’t experience. I don’t see why people think that autistic people should be grateful for representation when it seems like it’s lazy representation..

I 100% appreciate your comment and your support to showcase those with autism, but she would not have been able to speak to someone with non-verbal autism because, they're non-verbal. They don't speak. There is no way someone with non-verbal autism would have been able to play this role. But I agree with this video that the casting was lazy. I dont believe she searched high and low for the right person to represent this side of autism. Autism is widely showcased as "if you have autism youre highly intelligent and have special skills". People forget autism is a spectrum. No two people are the same. But casting someone on the spectrum would have been hugely beneficial to her as someone like Maddie will never be able to understand the mindset. Its a shame. This side of autism needs to be broadcast more but I worry this is not the way to do it. If people want to watch an amazing resource about Autism, I recommend watching Louis Theroux documentary on Autism.

Lucy Anderson I did not mean to be redundant or rude by saying that 😭 communicate is what I meant. But, I do want to say that when she would be communicating the she herself would still be speaking, and the non verbal people would be using whatever communication line they use besides speaking. Please though I know they don’t speak and it wasn’t meant to be rude.. I don’t believe that though. Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. I think that disabled people should be allowed more agency and credit where it’s due. I don’t think she did either, it really shows and it’s disappointing. I definitely agree, as that line of thinking most autistic are like that, I didn’t get diagnosed until I was 21, and I’m 22. There’s definitely other factors as to why I got a late diagnosis but that’s one of them! I wish more people would remember that autism is a spectrum and it simply doesn’t present that same as it does in others. Which is why I think she didn’t search that well for someone to play the main character. I think the whole spectrum should be broadcasted more loudly. Especially coming from women. Which is why I think it’s a complete shame she didn’t bother having the main character played by an autistic girl/woman. I will definitely check that out!
@hellkitty98
@hellkitty98 3 жыл бұрын
Rosey Rose I argue that should’ve given the main role to someone autistic NOT just to make it more believable, but because not many autistic people get opportunities like this. It’s so ironic that A LOT autistic people have a hard time getting and maintaining a job.. and she didn’t give any autistic women a job to play this role. Plus I don’t know why people argue that “actresses can do a better job” like okay and? Maddie is a dancer. How can she portray an autistic girl better than an autistic actress?.. I act almost everyday and I have by putting on a mask pretending I’m neurotypical 🤷🏻‍♀️ of course I don’t compare to actors and actresses on the big screen but yeah I think a lot of people can. So you think that just because autistic people can’t handle stress “as well” as neurotypical people that they shouldn’t be allowed to have roles like this? I’m not hating, I’m criticizing her. Anyone is allowed to criticize things, people, and people’s actions. I’m sorry you don’t agree with what I’m saying but I’m not sorry for sharing my opinions on the matter. And I’m back in quarantine so I can keep sharing my opinions until I’m bored of it.

@@hellkitty98 oh gosh I didn't think you were being rude at all !! This is why its so nice to have open conversations without people getting mad at eachother. For example, I didnt know you were autistic, and now I do, I view some of the things you mentioned differently because you speak from the POV of someone with autism. I speak from the POV of someone with a non verbal autistic brother, and he in particular I know would never be able to do something like this as his communication is next to nothing. He cannot speak for himself therefore I have to represent him as best I can. I need to also listen to my own words when I said its a spectrum, everyone is different and I cannot speak on behalf of all those non-verbal.❤ I feel this movie could have be an amazing opportunity to learn about this side of autism and I hope it doesn't misrepresent the autistic community as its so special.

As a woman with ASD who spent 15 years of my life attending up to 20 hours of dance lesson per week, one of the things that pisses me off the most was when she said it was “more compassionate” to cast Maddie. Neurodivergent people have had to adapt to the messed up systems of neurotypical society just to survive. There are those who are absolutely capable of doing such a role, especially since it would be a role personal to their own lives. And also, her response tells two things 1) she wasn’t willing to adapt her production process to accomodate an actually autistic person and 2) she looks upon them with pity, which means this is all straight up saviour-ism designed to give her clout and profit. If she truly cared about the topic and people she’s representing, she would have used her influence to cast a neurodivergent person and accomodate them as much as possible. She’d stop using condescending terms like “neuroatypical” and “sPeCiAl abiLiTIEs”, and stop talking as if the autism community should be GRATEFUL for any representation they get, even if it’s stereotypical and destructive as hell. We’ve seen this typecasted version of autism countless times before.... the time for more nuanced examinations of neurodivergent people is long overdue. High masking people need more representation, and those who are lower masking need empowerment, not to be alienated through depictions as being mystical, exotic concepts. Oh, and her not knowing Autism Speaks is considered a hate group and telling people that AS’s crimes are fake news is such bullshit. They’ve been under scrutiny for years, long before even her “three years of research” (which probably only amounts to statements from out-of-touch or flatout ableist “experts” and a single anecdote from an acquaintance who likely didn’t have the ability to say no to a multi-million dollar singer/songwriter).

I just hope everything will get a positive turn around because this portrays a huge problem in filming industry I was not aware of. @@GeoJoe2000 Hey, thank you. :) I just had to communicate my thoughts because this makes me so sad how she dealt with it. I think it is not problematic making a mistake but it is really important to be able to apologize and this is the best she could do for now. I believe she was just overwhelmed by the wave of critic because after working 14 years on this movie she probably always thought she would do the autistic community a favor but obviously there is potential to grow (and donate money from the film to advocacys that are not Autism Speaks). Maybe just a better and transparent communication should have been done because as I see there were critics in 2017 when it was announced that Maddie would play the role. Three years in which there was a way to communicate in a proper way why. I know I have nothing to do with that but I got the feeling I have to apologize for all of this and I hope you are well.

A different version he was in AA and had an interpreter there. Either way I don't get the impression that she interacted with him outside of that setting. Also she wrote this in 2013 based on a single page story that she wrote in 2007 so I don't even know what timeframe it is that she was interacting with Stevie.

There's a cool thing I read somewhere that said something like if you are a white writer write about black characters, but don't write about being black. If you are a straight actor don't write about being gay, but write about gay characters, and if you're fully abled, write about characters that have disabilities, not about being disabled. This film wouldn't have been made without sia's support, but if you had an autistic actor, playing the autistic character, at least it wouldn't feel like autistic people standing by and watching as neurotypical people tell the world what autistic people are like, without knowing the reality of what it's like first hand.

Im a bit older than many making comments and have seen that the past actors would get Oscar's and accolades for playing these roles, but there was not the voice of the communities to that the Internet brings to say they where not getting it right. I think the performance comes off mocking as people understand its a hollow experience. It's sad that the entertainment industry is slow slow to catch up.

As she didn't write it originally as a musical (producers gave her extra money to turn it into one) some reviews said that they were getting into the movie and then it would break for a musical number. What's the point in making a movie like this especially in 2020 if you're not going to hire a autistic actress? Then I keep seeing ignorant people making excuses like Autistic people can't handle working in that setting as if all of them are unable to work. That's not true! They can dance, sing and act just as well as everyone else too. This movies portrayal of autism is one big giant stereotype.

Wasn't professional or adult behavior how she lashed out-- definitely needs to grow up... People can take a movie trailer however they want- I mean the actress doesn't have to be autistic, but if the trailer comes off as condescending or mocking/ignorant in some way-- then yeah people are going to comment on it. If the main character was deaf, and she got no input from actual deaf people & anyone deaf felt like it was mocking the community they'd have the right to comment on their feelings of it. I commented that I wouldn't watch a movie a few years ago (forgot the name) based on the trailer-- it was supposed to be a scary movie but pretty much all the trailer showed was people running & screaming seeing a bed shake....wasn't convincing at all that it was supposed to be a ghost/demon or something terrorizing people. So I said it looked like a waste of money, and i wasn't going to bother watching something that boring looking. That's the point of movie trailers though, to decide if the viewer wants to spend time/money watching the actual movie. If you're one of the ones mad someone doesn't like the trailer, and said they don't want to watch the movie then you have issues not the people who aren't impressed with the trailer. Nobody is obligated to watch her movie or even like the trailer. If she is portraying autism-- anyone on the spectrum has a right to speak on the trailer/movie as well wether negative or positive anyone can criticize her work however they feel about it. Especially being a public figure she should expect at least a handful of people to hate the trailer..no movie trailer is loved by every person who watches it.

Autism Speaks didn't work on the movie and wasn't on board Long after the film was even finished, I chalk that up more to ignorance than malic, also I think her responses are reasonable because while it is understandable why people are mad, she's trying to reassure people that it's not like that and wait till it come out and watch it, if the movie sucks, I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't to avoid seeming wrong, I personally don't have a problem with Maddie playing the character as long as she plays it right, the thing that worries me is that I've never seen Maddie as a good actress so her performance coming across as mocking could be because of that

Without having looked at the trailer (but hey, you didn't watch the movie, so I guess it's ok to critisize anyway 😉) I just want to share some thoughts with you. The first argument you make I've heard others make, and I just want to say that as an actress it is my job to *act*. Actor are acting, aka playing someone they're not, so the actor doesn't have to be autustic to play it, just as you can play blind, deaf, lame, a person with glasses or a person from another country than you're from, without having these traits. I don't know much about Sia, I like her voice and some of her music, but isn't this her story to tell? She's producing, taking the blows, putting herself at risk. If you don't like it, maybe create your own story? I heard she tried working with an autustic person for the lead, but it was too intense for her, so they had to go with someone else. Do you know how expensive and time consuming it is to work with someone, only to have to find a new actor, and maybe to have to continue doing that? Yes, there are actors out there, but did they audition? Otherwise, how would she know beforehand where they were or if they were good? You can have your opinion, but I hope you know all autustic people aren't the same? Some people don't look different from "normal" people. Just a few things to have in mind. Maybe we should judge a movie by the story or the acting, by the actual movie? I'm not defending her personal behavior towards people, it looks pretty bad sometimes, although I don't have the context, but wouldn't you be upset if people critisized your work based on what they think of you, without even looking at the work itself? Just something to think about. I hope you'll have a nice week. 🙂 Kind regards, from an actress (who probably has autism herself)
@AutisticAllie

Thank you for sharing your thoughts which, unlike many others, aren't malicious in nature. I really respect that. I think the problem I have is much of the conversation around the trailer. Her complete disregard for autistic/neurodiverse people who have valid criticism demonstrates that, regardless of how the entire film depicts autism, she undermines and actively silences the autistic community. A lot of circumstances come into play here, but she's not trying to build bridges. The example she's setting is the exact OPPOSITE of what we want for better media portrayals and artistic representation. That's just disrespect. My opinion sure doesn't represent ALL autistic people, but those are just my two cents.
