This was one of my best mate’s cars. The engine does indeed have a cam but it’s also been bored and stroked so it’s not a 2.8 anymore - really hope you can save it! Will be looking forward to seeing it restored. I don’t know what your plans are with it when it’s done but I wouldn’t want this car to get lost so would buy it if your plan is to sell it at some point!

Taylor, I love it when people come to me and say "I need a bit of welding, it's only the size of a £1 coin" then I stop them right there and say "I will be the judge of that once I let my grinder with a wire wheel on it see it" then once I do that I send them pics and they are amazed at how bad it really is. And they always ask for a price before I start but tell them once I clean all the area down then I will give you a price price coz I've been stung giving out prices before starting so don't do it now.

The spray bar bolts should always be replaced with new ones from BMW. About 12 quid for both. They have a very slightly different thread pitch so they 'bite' into the threads in the cylinder head a bit more. plus they have pre applied threadlock. Clean the head threads out with brake cleaner, torque the new bolts up to 12 nm, job done. Apart from a VERY light test with fingers or a spanner to check for tightness, leave them alone forevermore.

On my channel I just rebuilt my M20 head after it had sat in a barn for 30 years. The bores were scored and even had scoring on the big end bearings but I’ve reassembled everything, it runs great and doesn’t use any oil👌🏻

After moving to New Zealand from the UK in 2016 it has transformed my view of rust on cars as they don't salt here. I got £2000 off my 89 Nissan Pao as it has a 50p size bit of surface rust in the spare wheel well, that's it but even now i count that little bit as alot 😂

i had e28 as a project that is free of rust compared to my one. rear top sock absorber mounts had holes due to corrosion. rear subframe mounts had to be reworked crazy rust.

Hard to assess the condition of the block, but probably needs a sleeve on that cylinder. Nothing unsalvageable but needs to come out for a rebuild. Is the block aluminium or cast iron? More worried about possible rust/cracks in the block.

At the point of seeing crystalised coolant, personally I'd have changed my plan and pulled the engine but Taylor easily leaves me in the weeds for mechanical knowledge so this is just an opinion. Bodywork wise though for a 37 year old car with 200k+ on it, it's in excellent shape.
