I just bought the same 2012 X5 Diesel at an auction in Ct. For $6600. I love the car. Had 1 issue with an electrical malfunction message. Lost all my gauges. And all the warning light came on. Cost me $650 at BMW to repair corroded wires in the rear hatch. Funny same exact color. Good luck with yours Randy! Great cars!

The BMW has a dipstick in addition to the electronic oil level check. Its on the right rear, near the bulkhead as you look at the engine. I had two of these. Also, the Diesel Exhaust fluid lasts a long time. The truck will alert you when it has 900 miles of DEF left. This will give you enough time to refill it.

That x5 might have a problem with the def system which can be costly, dealerships sometimes charge $500 to clean the def filter, it might need a new catalyst and both can be cleaned if you take it out and clean it with a high pressure water hose but you have to be careful with cleaning the def filter to much water pressure can destroy it, but the catalyst is expensive new 2k-5k depending on vehicle but you can try to find one used

Those newer looking parts towards the front of the engine is the EGV system that’s specific to this engine. I have a ‘13 with 86k miles and it’s runs perfectly. There is an extended warranty/service bulletin where BMW will replace the EGV system for up to 7yrs/100k miles from date of original service. It’s a big item too, $4-5k if you don’t get it done under warranty. There’s also a level sensor that goes bad in the DEF tank and you need to replace the entire system, not just the level sensor. Can be pretty expensive.

Under 30mpg? Wow. I'm getting 31-34mpg depending on how I drive (almost zero city driving) but I did a bunch of digging and found that the 2015 year was the best balance for me in terms of cargo space and efficiency. (of course, I am nearly always in Eco mode, because I'm boring) The USB port would be for Nav updates, and music playback (I've got a 128g stick in mine currently) The 'plumbing' on the front should be your EGR stuff. mine was replaced due to a recall this winter. The main DEF port on the passenger side is the fill to the active tank. the port on the driver feeds the passive tank, which should not need to be filled under normal operation.' ---- Hopefully that code stays away, but looks like a solid car. It would would take a considerable sum of cash, or nicer car to offload my F15 generation. ENJOY THIS ONE!

Funny to see those plastic pieces in the armrest glovebox, those used to go over the cup holder area and were connected and you could pull them to cover that area, and those are always broken lol. Even my uncles X5 Diesel same year with XDrive35 or 40d had that broken. All these sounds and everything are so familiar. The check engine light could be O2 sensors? Least thats what threw the engine light on my uncles X5 when it ran perfectly fine. He also had troubles with the Turbo later going out and other stuff all in a span of 2 months or so. He sold it really quick after that and recently got a 2006 ML 350 as the replacement which is at the service right now for annual service. Another great video Randy!

You took it for a song, Randy. Those diesel engines are very popular here in Europe, and in many countries, it is possible to do a DPF delete like in the USA. With that mileage, it is a risk to keep it longer, but for car flipping is ideal. Sell it for a profit and call it a day. 👍

A large Dealer doesn't generally work with finance companies on cars more than 10 years old. 6k is about what you should pay as redlight special at dealer auction at most for an x5 that old would have been 10k with no lights on the dash and a smaller used dealer would be the ones to get someone financed for it, and that still wouldn't be easy because its got more than 80k miles on a German vehicle. But it's an absolute steal at that price if you can retail it yourself and not have that CEL come back on. I would also recommend looking into open recalls, because diesel gate actually impacted all diesels sold in North America; my 13 s350 still has engine warranty until I hit 177k.

DEF does not need to stay topped up. This car has two tanks and they take roughly 6 gallons total and that amount lasts for roughly 10k miles. They should never be topped up to the lid because DEF then can get into the overflow and vent openings and corrode everything. When the DEF warning light comes on it means that the passive tank is completely empty and the other one just below it's full mark. Google has the refill instructions

It’s a shame the US doesn’t seem to adopt these smaller diesels. My dads got an f150 diesel with a 3.0 powerstroke in it, which is basically a Land Rover engine used in Europe ford redesigned for the f150. Such a fun truck and it gets like 27 mpg on the highway! These types of vehicles are very popular in Europe. I think you got a steal dude. Guessing the dealer let it go because of the year and mileage. They probably gave the customer like 5 grand for it, so they still made something or broke even. I bet a lot of bmw customers probably prefer gas. I love my diesels!

Randy, don’t jinx yourself. You know dealers have units on their retail lots that they own for too much and that interest payment is due every month. Have you ever been short of cash when you have to make payroll? First thing you do is dump a unit that’s retail-ready. It’s evident that they invested money in it to put it on the front line. They wouldn’t have done that if they knew of a problem with it. It would have gone right to a wholesaler or an auction! Then they could relax for another 5 days, lol!

Not reliable if you ask the UK Police lol. They've recently had to stop using them because they keep blowing up, though that's partly down to way they are driven at high speeds and hours of idling.

I think it's because from what I see and what I hear on KZbin that in the USA they do not like diesels in their cars so I think that's probably why the dealer had no choice but to sell it off for 60% off

Randy, you need to get yourself a proper Range Rover with the M57 diesel engine.

This is supposedly the most reliable x5 model although I'm assuming they are talking about the gas version.

Good buy might make some money. The dealership probably has enough vehicles to get rid of and just let this one go down the road.
