The old rules are dead - it's perfectly fine to start a sentence with a conjunction!

I hate to criticise but playing a music track at the same time as a speaking track doesn't help comprehension either! This would be so much easier to listen to without the music.

Conjunctions aren't really the problem here -- in fact, the examples with "so" are barely even conjunctions.. The problem is that the writer has chopped the passage into short sentences (or sentence fragments) which relаy inner thoughts in a fragmentary way. The overuse of sentence-initial conjunctions disappears to a considerable extent if you consolidate the fragments into conventional sentences. The result is that only three really begin with conjunctions ('but', 'and', and 'because'). 'So' in 'so what?' is a fossilised conjunction and doesn't really count. "But Sammy wasn't about to rush home. So what if he was late? And so what if Jennifer was angry? Because the truth was, he was a little sick of Jennifer and tired of her nagging. He didn't want to hear about her annoying boss, or listen to that cheesy pop music she loved, or spend his nights watching bad reality TV because she just had to find out who got voted off the island."
