I'm writing a historical fiction set in the 1940s, and I've been diligent about dialogue. The term "dating" was a new word and uniquely American. Brits still called it "courting." My characters would not know "modern" Americanisms. That on top of naming the characters, period-correct clothing, location names, researching literally any object they come in contact with to be sure it existed back then, I even began to keep notes on what the weather was like on a specific day so I can work that into the plot. It's been a challenge, that's for sure, but the research is fascinating.

Couldn't agree more on the modern versus period attitudes part. It's the reason I love the works of authors like Tim Willocks and Bernard Cornwell, both writers who place factual accuracy and brutal realism over political correctness and relatability. It's a big part of why films such as Ran and Kagemusha by Akira Kurosawa or the film adaptation of Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick are masterpieces. This video just cannot be recommended enough to anyone looking to become a good author of period pieces.

In fact, I'd also go so far as to say the movie The VVitch (sic) was much like this. The son's modern hair and the lax parenting (by Puritan standards) notwithstanding. Realism and good soundtracks go a long way with me.

This was an excellent intro to working with historical fiction. Although I already knew about the names and technology aspects, it never occurred to me that the stakes would be different in other eras! I'm beginning to work on a novel set in early Victorian England and these tips are really helpful. Also am glad you mentioned the differences in 21st century sensibilities and historical one.

I've been wanting to make a story about WW2, but in a world where some people are born with super powers. I just don't know how to arrange the superhuman regiments for the military and whether they should just be part of other regiments or their own or if they should also be segregated.
