Howdy! Here's an important update for new viewers of this video... I did not like the internal beads for wheel balancing and ended up taking them out and going with traditional static wheel weights. My biggest complaint was that they were inconsistent, fine for several miles and you'd hit a bump and they would be out of whack. I was very happy with the wheel and tire combo!!! Awesome performance overall!!!

If both tire and wheel are high uality, you should've lined up the yellow/red dot on the side wall with the valve stem in the wheel. Balancing matrial probably wouldn't have been needed. Been doing that for five yers with the company I'm at.

I know many people like that the Patagonia MT is lighter but it comes at a price. They have thinner sidewalls. The weight savings didn't come from a special treadwear compound. Overall I do like the tire but I do believe that a heavier tire is a testament to how well it's made.

My experience with the balancing beads - they worked just fine however they played havoc with the valves when airing back up.....and that was with the special valves. Pretty much always had to remove at least one valve completely and reinsert it to clear it from sticking. I returned to regular weights after a few months.

The kmc wheels have two valves per wheel so you always have an alternate valve that isn't pointed into the pool of beads. You can also drill and add a second valve to any wheel.
@peterfalkner3905 жыл бұрын
That should be a great help. When I experienced blockage the valve position appeared to be random positions. Maybe bad luck? 1 in 4 valves would stick, again random.

Great review as always!! I just added these tires last week in the same 38x13.5 r17. Totally happy with them so far. I've only had them on the highway so far, but they're quieter and lighter than my previous 35x12.5 r17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. Can't wait to see how well they work off road! Seems like they are getting more popular everyday. The prices have been rising. Saw them a month ago and they were $199 at Walmart.com I eventually got a set at $249 a piece, still a great price for this type of tire. I also got some new wheels that have -12 offset and I have a little rubbing on the back of the driver side tire and the frame when fully turned left. Not enough rubbing to make me want to put the wheel spacers back on but a -18 offset should be perfect. Couldn't afford the beadlocks this time but hopefully soon. And you were right about the tire size, I used 36.5" on my traildash to program the tire size and speedo to be within 1mph at 75mph. Thanks again for all the info. Great video, I've had my eye on these 38" tires, what kind of back spacing did you have to get on the wheels to maintain clearance with the 13.5 width? Don't know if you've tried it but If you line up the yellow dot on the tire with the valve steam it will balance a lot easier without balancing beads, even with bead locks, its a balancing mark. if you get a tire that has a red and yellow dot then you use the red dot. The dots indicate the lighter side of the tire. Granted this really doesn't matter for your 40"+ tires and your more aggressive off road only cause they're always a pain it seems like.
@AutoEdits4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input, I've heard that a bunch about the marks on the tire but are you sure? How in the world do they measure the balance weight in the manufacturing process? About the Patagonia's ... I love them. Only tip to getting best results is to rotate them every 5k miles. They are susceptible to "cupping" but are absolutely worth it. I try to rotate at that interval but let them go to about 8 and started to notice a slight vibration... rotated them and it went away and they've been exceptional ever since.
@adventure18874 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits I was preached about those dots during auto tech and then again during motorcycle mechanics school. Honestly didn't get to see why till I started working on industrial equipment and had to go to to a toyo plant to help install a gantry robot that moved tooling around. After the tire is demolded it goes down a quality control line and one of the stations is a dynamic balancer that checks it. Do you think a -12 offset on the wheels is enough for those tires or do I need more back spacing for it to have clearance at flex?
@AutoEdits4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. These wheels have a -18 or 4.5 backspace and did require me to add one bump stop spacer to keep them from rubbing at full stuff.

Like the look. Did you just choose to go without the black center cap? (I think it looks much better without!)... Also, what gears are you running?
@AutoEdits4 жыл бұрын
They don't really offer center caps for these and I'm running 4.88 gears and it's perfect.

@@AutoEdits Really... I expected you might say 5.12s. Cool! So, I assume good around town and on the highway? And the beadlocks... also fine for a good amount of necessary driving around town? (Asking because my set up is very similar to yours, but I have to daily drive... so really grinding on the decision of what gears and wheels to go with.)

The yellow dot on the side wall should be lined up with the valve stem, for balance, so i am told!

Great vid! For next time ~ a. you did not mention why the tire's yellow dot's position in relation to the valve stem is important for balancing, b. 6 ounces should be plenty since less is needed in tire vs on rim, and c. AFAIK, you can't later add more beads through stem if you are using tire pressure sensors. HTH

Pretty sure the yellow dot on the tire is supposed to line up w the valve stem
@AutoEdits5 жыл бұрын
I've heard that from other comments but never from an actual tire manufacturer. I don't think they spin balance them in the factory to find the heavy or light spot.
@henrycruz45cal4 жыл бұрын
If you want to know how NOT to mount BLs watch this video. First, he didn't line up the yellow dot. Secondly he didnt line the edge of the tire with the rims edging before putting the BL on

A: when mixing chemicals in random bottles safety protocol requires you mark it according , i.e. “ soapy water “ or “ not booze “ B: the new wheels look like Mustang GT wheels with bead locks C: I like the “ chunks of rubber “ art work in your garage.

@@AutoEdits You mentioned they are called F-Manx in your description, but the link says 398 Manx beadlock and shows a 6-lug. Is it so new, it is not on their website yet? If so, how did you get them? I am looking for new beads and tires and was thinking about these.

Love your videos. Just got a 2016 Jeep sport unlimited. It’s my new baby- I am not gonna be content until I have some good tires and wheels. Then a lift later.. can you help me find some good 33” or 35” that won’t break me! I’m pretty broke now that I got this Jeep. So also I have 17x9 stock rims which I hate! Tires are like mew so I plan on seeking them. I’m on line all the time now Trying to learn the less expensive mods I can do write away. Love that you are so nuts to put bigger and bigger tires on your Jeep. Are you going sell your 35”? Or were they 37”?

Howdy and welcome! Check this video for a couple easy upgrades kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4K3nmCcmrR_bNk I would swap the JWSpeaker tail lights that I put in the description but otherwise great stuff! I've been happy with the Milestar tires and they are still affordable in the 35" size.
