This is a Subsonic Flight Training briefing on Autoflight Overview of the Mode Control Panel (MCP).
This Training Tips presentation will focus on an overview of the Mode Control Panel. Roll modes, Pitch modes, Autothrottle modes, A/P and A/T engage and disconnect are discussed, as well as a description of toggle switches, rotary switches, windows, push button switches, and the gang bar associated with the Mode Control Panel (MCP)

Depends who you ask, LOL! I know that students dreaded my FAA Orals because I asked a lot of questions, but I was very fair. I always figured these guys and gals spent a lot of work studying so this was their chance to showcase their efforts. It was very rare that a student was not prepared. I never expected them to be able to answer all of my questions, but at least 80% of them...

I love to do the KCVG to PANC flights and come in on 07R or 15 at PANC. I'm really looking forward to the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and hope PMDG can be used with it. Best Regards!!

Your series on modern avionics is fascinating. Although I have about 400 hours as a PP-SEL, I haven’t flown since 1988. Most of my time after getting my license was in a 1976 Skyhawk with basic IFR equipment and no auto pilot. I have seen still pictures of the new displays, but never had them explained to me or seen them in action. This stuff makes it so easy it feels like cheating! I really miss flying, but these days with diabetes, hypertension, and failing eyesight, flight must remain just a fond memory.

3 years later, sorry Norman, I was answering a current comment, and saw I did not answer you. Yes, it is easy. The biggest challenge is managing the information and keeping it simple. Does not matter whether you are in a 172 or a 747, flying is flying, and the same physical laws still apply. A good stick and rudder pilot with a good scan, sound judgement, smooth actions, and an attitude of safety first will excel in a 172 or 747.

Al, I found it interesting that British uses the 747-400 London to KSAN, only a 9400 foot runway. Are they limited on takeoff/landing weights due to this? Regards!

Hi 99, sorry I missed this, they would fine landing at KSAN when they burn off fuel from London, they would be limited on takeoff however. It is about the same as taking off from KSEA on RW 34C, which also has a 9400 foot runway. There with Flaps 20, Full TO, Max TO Weight would be 368 tons, or about 810,500 pounds. It would be similar at KSAN give or take depending on obstacles and segment climbs...

When you selected altitude hold and the auto throttle automatically goes to speed just what speed is it going to maintain? V ref plus 100?

When pushing Altitude Hold, the A/T if not in the SPD mode, will go to the SPD mode and maintain whatever the Target/Commanded speed was at the time of the transition to altitude hold. So, I think in the video, we were in VNAV PTH and by pushing ALT HOLD, the jet comes out of VNAV PTH, and goes to ALT, and the A/T stays in SPD, the MCP speed window opens to the current target or commanded speed and maintains that...

Yes, A99, I am strictly PMDG now and I am on the Tech Team there as well, my videos are over a year old, I need to make some more soon hopefully...
