The I9 infotainment is as described a bit much to setup, but once done properly, there is little that needs to be done on a day-in, day-out basis. And it's super high tech for today's driver. X3 has the controls like previous BMWs and Mazdas I've owned, but I want something more updated - like the X1 has, Besides, even X3 will get the new I9 info screens when it get's a refresher. The learning curve is quite short - and permanent.

What most impresses and baffles me is to how Thomas can give a near-perfection description of the nuances of the vehicles(s) he is reviewing and comparing in most minute detail, WHILE GOING 100+MPH ON THE AUTOBAHN. Really wished they offered this in the US, but the F48 xDrive28i we got still gets 29mpg in mixed driving with 33mpg long highway cruising.

I own an X3 30d and my mom has a iX1. The X1 has definetely come close or even exceed the quality of the X3 in some areas. Driving wise I still prefer the X3. I use it as a family car. The X3 is really good on long distance driving. Has a more planted and safe driving feel at higher speeds. The suspension feels more mature and less sporty. But as my mom drives the iX1 mostly around town and shorter distances, it is more suited for her. Better and more maneuverable around town. I agree the seats are a bit better in the X1. But the the new infontainment system in the X1 is too complicated and too gimmicky. The X3 has more user friendly interface and controls.

I prefer the X1 . As with all of them, I have had to resort to the app , for guidance. We haven't even conquered the profiles yet 😂. Great cars tho and I love the new X1 in sport mode (minus the lag )

Very interesting comparison. I owe a X3 3.0d and I am ready to buy a X1, since the daughters have grown up and I do not need such a big car. But, as I went to see the X1, big surprise, it is no such little as I expected: 21 cm less but plenty of space where it is needed. So, no game: X1 will be soon in my garage.

I found the double-clutch in X1 annoying and laggy in city vs all time great and quick ZF in X3. Also when M suspension, X1 on 19” runflats was way much stiffer and less comfortable on bad quality roads vs. when 19” run flats on X3 with M suspension. Noise isolation on X3, plus still manual controls, I have chosen X3. But X1 looks great and is good choice if budget is limited.

I had a 2020 BMW 330i and jut got the 2023 X1 and the noticeable differences on the 330i are: Nicer exterior paint+better stereo+comfortable seats, nicer sport gearing. I do like the new X1 driving and visibility factor and large open roof.

If budget is not a concern, I recommend opting for the X3. The X1 seems more like a glorified hatchback, sitting low to the ground and feeling cramped inside. The X3 offers a more spacious interior and a higher driving position, providing a better overall experience.

Hi Thomas! Thanks for the thorough comparison! I own a X1 XDrive 25e PHEV and I am able to drive 80+ km in summer (temp. above 20 deg). When the temperature drops to 10-15, about 70 km. We'll see how the electric engine performs during winter time (I live in Finland). Overall, the X1 was a great choice!

Great comparison Autogefühl! Looks like with the new X1 the X3 really starts to be obsolete... it's bigger and more expensive but doesn't give you any more value... only when you want a bigger engine, but usually most X3s I see are 4-cylinders.

We have a new (almost 2022) X3 M 40i and New 2024 X 1 28i too! All wecan say is we love them both! We use them for almost the same the purposes, but, on long trips 300 miles or more we chose the X3 because we can easily carry all of luggage and the souvenirs we pick up along the way too. They are both comfortable, quick, economical (the M 40i which is the BMW inline 6 with almost 400 hp get over 32 mpg!) and the "little" X 1 is great in city and highway driving. We also have the new X 1 in the color shown in the video and it is just gorgeous with the light color seats. We love them both, We drive them both and we're having a blast! If you can do it, get them both! We did! Oh, we gave up a 2020 330i M sport to get the X 1 but, only because it is easier for us as seniors to get in and out of. We loved that one too! @@colettejaques2559 We have them both! The little X 1 is nice for just running about town. On long trips the cargo capacity of the X 3 and the power of the inline 6 is great. The X 1 gets really good mpg in the city (depending on how we drive) and the X 3 on long trips get 32 mpg. Two very nice, comfortable and easy to drive SUVs. We have two because we each drive and sometimes we head off to different directions and each of us needs a car. Thanks. J

Sounds to me like the X1 is the better out of the two. I would like to see a test between the first ever X3 and this X1, or a comparison between the two. I am aware there is almost a 20 year gap and the engines have shrunk in size, but the comfort and the space would not be far off, between those two.

I have 2019 X1 fully optioned wirh 19" Niche wheels. In October when it's available, I'm ordering the new 2024 X1 M35i with the option 20" wheels. By the way the turning knob is called a dial. The new M35i is without a doubt much better than the current X3 and is much cooler too. The M interior is absolutely stunning.

Thank you for your comprehensive and clear review! I have previously owned an X1 and have been driving the new X1 Plug-in Hybrid for a week now. I completely agree with your experience in terms of comfort, driving and user interface. What I would like to add is that the new X1 has a fixed centre console with a very shallow, narrow upper storage compartment. This is really a design flaw in my opinion. Because it is fixed, the lower part of the console is not easily accessible and the upper compartment is shaped in such a way that hardly anything can be stored in it. That loss of (usefull) space is such a shame!

Having owned both, the X3 is definetly a better car and more luxurious interior. However the X1 is very competent, and actually a more comfortable vehicle in-town. On top of that the new X1 has a pretty cool design and has more modern ADAS functions.

Thomas, I like your reviews, but it is frustrating that you do not elaborate on the engine/gearbox of both cars. The X3 has the conventional ZF 8 speed torque converting gearbox while the X1 has a 7 speed DCT box. How did the 7 speed compare to the 8? The 7 has no torque converter and must feel totally different. Do these cars both have the X drive system? Hope you can acknowledge and take more time in the future to elaborate.

The hood length is what give the X3 more total inch/cm's. The extra length is for the optional V6. Legroom and headroom numbers are nearly identical in both. The 8spd in X3 vs 7spd dct in X1 does make a difference as well. I know these are PI hybrids, I'm speaking of ICE variants.

Another great video. I agree, X1 everyday, however I believe the X3 is showing its age and now needs the tech and body refresh. I also think the outer profile sections of the rear bumper of the X1 has a similar family appearance to the rear of the M2. 😮

The X1's shorter screen for the instruments kinda ruins the whole thing. You can really see that thick top border when driving in sunlight. I'm amazed that they chose to cheap out on it and not use the same display as the center one, with bigger "dials" to fill it up obv. Such a shame.

I cannot believe they have not fitted the iDrive controller on the X1. On long journeys in our X3, being able to check alt routes, fuel stations etc without touching a screen is logical and far more safe. Total fail on that 1 point alone. And I dont think the X1 has paddle shift either...

We had the previous generation X1, and it was a super disappointment. This one is a whole new story. We will be back to the brand. As for the current X3, nice, but the new X1 has the edge. JMO … GO BMW !

Just ordered the X1 for my States' location (Tucson, AZ), and your review confirms my wise choice. Great review as always Thomas. I'll drive this vehicle alone 99.9% of the time, so space, or mpg either, is of no importance to me. I ordered the ICE M Sport X1 with Veganza black inside Alpine White outside. Love the vehicle (in advance of having Regensberg do the custom build). 4th BMW for me - but I've bought 49 new - many brands of course - in my 79 year lifetime.

X1 has many great features, x3 is only slightly wider and longer, yet cabin space is great. Interior is more modern. Sport seat looks nice, but may not be ideal for a larger person.

Had all three; ‘17 X1 M sport , ‘22 X3M, ‘20 X5 M50. I would get a ‘24 X1 M235. Unless you absolutely need the extra room and space of the very refined X5, the space efficiency and driving dynamics of the X1 is the best IMO. The X1 M235 drives like a Focus RS with greater utility.

Hi Thomas, regarding @ 17:37 “The steering here is pretty crisp and precise, more precise than in the BMW 3 Series actually,”, my X1 has better steering and road feel than my newer 2 and 3 series cars with electric steering. I suspect this is due to the X1 having more front weight bias over the wheels that steer, as opposed to 50/50 distribution in the 2 and 3 series cars. My older E39, E60 and E90 cars were 50/50 distribution, and excellent steering feel, but had hydraulic steering.

To feel a RWD bias on the X1 you can change to a high gear then exit out. The engine is now at low rpm so producing less power while the motor is at full power. The effect is strong in my 25e so must be very strong in the 30e.

I tested the X1 - The middle console and arm support is just not good and feels very filmsy and cheap (there is even a whole airgap beneath it.. yikes), whereas the X3 feels like a fully integrated cockpit. This was for me the ONLY reason not to go for the X1. In the end I went with the 3 touring 4 cilinder (320i G21) and very happy about it. The 5 was a great option as well.

I have one on an active tourer. It doesn't move at all, I can't understand how you can call it flimsy and cheap (it's in leatherette definitely not something cheap). I would have liked for it to have more positions, but you can't have everything.

@@Andrei-kh6kr You should try to sit in a 3,5, X3 or X5. The immersion feel to it is totally different. Even while you might be correct and the arm rest does not really move (that much), it does have quite the office chair armrest feel to it. It was literally bothering me within the first second of sitting in the X1. Could I get used to it? Maybe, but I suppose it would bother me indefinitely.

@@fredez6763 I did. the 3 and the 5 force me to have the legs way way too stretched and the SUVs are way too high, I feel like I am driving a bus. but this has nothing to do with the armrest. anyways you didn't say anything about the position you said it was flimsy and cheap, which means something completely different. That's what I was pointing out. and now from what you say I understand that in fact it was something else bothering you. so basically you used the wrong words.

another great review and for a non native English speaker most impressive. I have had my X1 30E M Sport since January and when plug in regularly ( my tarrif is 10 pence per KWH and I average 3.5 miles per KW) its impressive as well as the electric range which for a car this size is pretty near top of thr class. The acceleration is really impressive and driving experience is very good. I chose 20 inch wheels which are not to everyones taste in terms of ride but I am happy with them. The lack of a rotary controller is a bit of a miss by BMW and the very small centre console hatch that is designed to open for left hand drive not for the UK ! I have cut my running costs considerably by investing in a 7kw wall charger. So overall I love the car and it would be even better if there was more robust App connectivity with the car, a rotary controller and a more simplified was of swithcing between hybrid, electric and ICE. 😀

The only reason I can never buy a BMW is for the most trivial reason imaginable.... the interior front door handles. The position of the handle makes it impossible to catch the door from banging into the car parked next to you. The handle is too far forward for the pivot point of the hinge. Plus, parking spaces are getting smaller and smaller... I know, trivial, but BMW's not getting my vote (or money). Otherwise, a very good review and comparison video.

@autogefuehl what do you think about transmissions comparisson for the city driving. I've seen reviews where they say DCT in X1 is bit choppy for city driving and that ZF is superior. I see it mostly in US reviews, maybe because they do not have mild-hybrids always there and it drives diferently if it is mild hybrid and not pure petrol powetrain? Did you have this impression of choppiness during take offs, or is it just fine?

Thanks for another comparison video 👍 The X1 looks fresher and the X3 a bit dated but much greater usability with the older infotainment. Though the X1 looks more modern it also seems "cheaper", and somehow the interior cabin looks a little less spacious than it's previous version. The X3 though bigger has always not made the best use of space, when i was investigating the new(ish) Active Tourer i found it much easy to access the rear seats in that versus the X3 as the rear door opening wasn't large and you have to lean over the wheel arch. That's one comparison video you MUST do - the Active Tourer vs the X1 - van or SUV.

For the right hand drive markets I cannot accept that BMW kept the X1 centre console opening on the passenger side. Rediculous and impractical. A deal breaker for me - how much extra effort (and cost) would it have been to have it opening from the driver's side?!!! I hope they sort this out in the 2024 X3 otherwise they will lose me to Merc, Audi or Lexus....

Excellent comparison, just a thought, could we get a thought from the passenger on how comfortable the ride is, as the passenger doesn't have a steering wheel to hold onto, do the seats keep you in position nicely, thanks Wazza from New Zealand.

Like for instance X1 vs. 3 series, as they seem the closest in specs. There may be a lot of people looking to change clas one way or another, and this may help with the decision.

Losing the gear stick, castrating wheel usage, and moving more or less everything on the screen is a mistake imho. No more driving mode buttons? Come on. It is really annoying and unpleasant having to tap for stuff that idrive7 forces you to, while driving. It's a dawn of a driver oriented era cars. Hope the industry starts to offer all the buttons as a premium again :) but since masses will buy, little chance there. At least you get to have 8 fast memory buttons in x3, when that is also gone in idrive8.. I miss direct AC on/off, instead of climate menu button etc. The enhanced engine sound is also kinda strange.

Great video. We have the X3 in this video and it's lease is due up next March. We looked at the X1 as well but the X3 has all the bells and whistles and has a ridiculously low mileage too. The buyback price is reasonable too. I really don't like the way they've got rid of the hardware climate controls on the X1 either. The new X3 is even bigger than this one and also much more expensive, its size alone makes it wildly impractical for Swiss roads and parking, so leasing a new X3 is totally out. Decisions, decisions.....

i have a e84 (2013) x1 and a G01(2020) I can confirm that the x1 is a more “fun “ to drive . alone , when with the family take the x3

I own new x1 23d m pack. Great car . The only thing I don't like is the suspension on bad roads. Bad noises and not good absorption. I had x2 last year m pack, was perfect on bumpy roads. Is it my car or is it general?

Why? They are different't cars? If you want an x3, you go and buy what is available. You can forever prolong the buy with that logic. I just got a 23 x3 and it rocks. I like the old cockpit design, not being like a public bus with all that boring screens. Eventually they are gonna cut some more costs with material and endurance on a new car.

Why do you have to touch down the screen every time you are driving? Unless you change your music every minute and change the air every 2 seconds. I have a head up display and i do not touch the screen that often. I am so fast with it that it makes no difference to me. We are in a modern era and some people refuse change. When I worked at a hospital 10 years ago doctors refused to use the computer to write notes they preferred the crappy handwriting that nobody understood. They realized they were not way back and moved on I am so used to the touch screen that I do not miss any button. Cars are going that direction better get used to it. Look at the new X5.

@@AmilcarP Hi, I'm driving for aprox 20 years now. Mostly higher class cars. My rant is NOT about technology progress and change, it is about interacting with it. And I honestly subjectively and objectively claim that going full touchscreen is not progress in tech. It's just cutting expenses. And yes, I do change stuff all the time, maybe it's just me, I can not say. Since I have Idrive 7, I have the commodity to use the wheel and saved shortcuts on number buttons, and I literally hate it to the guts every time I need to use touchscreen. It has nothing to do with tech as I said.

listening with a headset seems the noise insulation is way better on the X3 ? other than that I prefer the X1 as the battery seems to have been shoehorned into the trunk and it ends up up smaller than in the shorter car. While I prefer direct access buttons the design of the dash in the X3 feel dated and boring while I love the dash of the new X1.
