@shananagans57 жыл бұрын
I agree. There are a few things helicopters can do that a gyro can't but they are much simpler mechanically, cost much less & have many of the same capabilities. They can't hover so getting into small landing spaces where an auto rotation landing would be dangerous still needs a helicopter & I can think of several other things where a gyro simply wouldn't work but yea, I agree, a gyro has a huge niche there. Seems to me lots of helicopters are being used simply because they don't need a full runway & a gyro could fill that need in many cases.
@oryctesrhinoceros49207 жыл бұрын
shananagans5 it was said autogyros can hover
@shananagans57 жыл бұрын
Yes, they can hover but not for very long. They have to rely on the inertia in the rotor. If they were coming in for a very low speed landing, they are committed to landing in that spot. A helicopter can start to come in, decide it's to tight & go back up. I can see that being an issue for rescue flights having to land in unfamiliar spots that may be very tight. Like I said, gyros can offer may similar capabilities but there are still cases where a conventional helicopter would be needed.

Every time I watch these fabulous machines, my nerve system is focused at the point where the propeller blades are fixed. That point must be exposed to incredible strong forces from all directions. How is it possible without fast developing metal fatigue? The same goes for the flimsy rotor.

Level of skill (90th percentile+), Quality of aircraft (same), Experience(100's of hours), Training (highest), Practicability (10th percentile or lower). The Autogyro is a brilliant viewing, distance-eating and safe machine and the vast majority of them used in this way will result in a crash. Selling these as a 'sports' aircraft will continue to stifle this industry's growth and inhibit research/development by lowering sales. To become the most used aircraft in the world marketing must be aimed at the female (safety, comfort, design, space) because women still make most of the purchasing decisions; hubby will still get his toy and she will be delighted to accompany him. A black box which is tuned to identify flight indiscretions would be strongly advisable.

Is it an optical illusion from about 2:22 to 2:40 or is the XENON really flying sideways? Aside from the overhead rotor not being powered, I had thought that it also did not have the swash plate and range of cyclic control that a helicopter does, in order to fly sideways. Was the pilot giving up altitutude to keep the rpms up on the lifting rotor, so that the collective could be used to fly sideways? I think I'm missing something here.

Nice ! Buzzing around like a fly. That craft has some awesome moves. Sharp dives, low air speed to near hovering and quick accents and sharp turns. I like the end the best when you show the best part about a gyro, a safe landing with NO power. Looks like it would be very hard to stall that thing. I want one ! Where can I get one and how much? Oh! and also a nice job on the stick !

@rosebarnes96254 жыл бұрын
@@peterhigbie2398 that does not make sense... Yes, 4 ft ground roll on landing is awesome, unfortunately that is around sea level, here at a mile high, you won't see that....
@RoadRunnerLaser4 жыл бұрын
Rose Barnes - Actually, Pete is right (even if his use of words is a little off, "two" instead of "too" and "prop" instead of "rotor"). Shove the stick forward into the panel and pull a negative G manoeuvre and you will unload the rotor. Unloading the rotor is a fast way to take on the aerodynamic properties of a house-brick and it's something which is drummed into us in training - to always ALLOW the nose to drop and never to PUSH it down. Even at a mile high, a gyro should be able to stop like that - if it has enough lift from its rotors to keep it airborne, it has enough lift to stop the thing dead on touchdown when the stick is pulled all the way back.
@rosebarnes96254 жыл бұрын

God I love this flying. Not so sure I'd want to be IN the thing as this guy throws it around though :-) Can I ask what must be a very naive question to you pilots out there? As a non-flyer, I can grasp what 'G' loading is for a fixed wing, I know what a wing spar is... But how the Hell does this thing here not snap it's rotors off when fully loaded coming out of a dive, say... those skinny rotors can't have much of a spar in them can they? I do see that when they're spinning that will cancel out some of the loading, I guess, but what stops them just snapping off?? I'm all ears guys.
@badoli10749 жыл бұрын
Chris England G-load is not only for fixed wing, it's just the amount of force your body or the vehicle experiences during any maneuver. You have the same in formula one (or any racing) and you experience it yourself when you turn your car (alltough minuscule in relation to a plane). Those wings are probably made from aluminium or carbon fiber and designed to withstand such forces. There are some very dureable materials out there ;)
@dirkkoopman1749 жыл бұрын
Chris England Basically what happens is the "G loading" is turned into rotor speed. The more loading there is implies that there is more air flowing through the rotors which, in turn, increases the rotor speed. There is roughly a nominal 4G limit, but it isn't that simple as it isn't the blades that "feel" the G. Effectively because of the way autorotation works, together with the "plumb bob" that is the fuselage, it isn't possible to get more than 4G of turn - the whole package won't allow it. On the minus side, any negative G manoeuvres (at all) and the "plumb bob" ceases to exist, the blades will flap about and hit the tail/engine blades and it will fall out of the sky.
@trickcyclists9 жыл бұрын
+pen mightygun Yes that's my understanding too. A 4G load is a 4G load isn't it? As you say, if it's NOT four times gravity loading, then it can't be a 4G can it. So, thanks for the replies guys, but I do feel just as in the dark as I was, lol. I simply can't grasp how such flimsy blades can remain intact !! It is of course patently obvious that they do.. so I'm just as obviously not 'getting it'. Yes, thank you Badoli, I do understand what G load is, as you say, we all experience it every time we drive a car, as a horizontal loading... Which is why and how Formula 1 drivers need to have neck strengthening exercises to withstand the large sideways loading on them. Also, yes, carbon fibre and aluminium are very strong, especially aircraft grade aluminium, which has a high copper content I believe. But still, if a fixed (plane's) wing was built of either material.. and with the proportions of gyrocopter rotors, i.e. very long and thin, I wouldn't trust them on a plane either, lol. I keep imagining the whole gyro' suspended by the tips of each rotor.. held up and off the ground... would the thing remain suspended? Or would the blades give in and fold up? I think they would at least flex upwards at a crazy angle.. but would they break? I guess not.. I can only think that there is the dynamic effect, somehow, that mitigates the g loading. Yes, Dirk, I do see that the rotors would sort of translate any high loading into rotor speed, I see that. In the same way that an 'engine off' dive and then a flare would do the same thing.. but I don't feel that this fully explains how the rotors remain intact in a high G loading. My apologies for being a bit dim in this, lol. I'm an engineer and have fixed and produced many machines in my lifetime, both in maintenance and in R&D.. So I feel I have, generally, quite a good grasp of many different principles... but I must admit to being in a bit of a fog regarding this 'thing' !! I feel an email to the makers of the Xenon might be in order... :-)
@Traqr8 жыл бұрын
The rotors are heavy and spinning fast. Tension from centripetal acceleration helps keep everything in place, but you can see the rotor disk "coning" in many of these maneuvers.
