I guess it goes with image processing softwares. It probably requires some more calibration to detect people of colour. I remember building a robot in college and struggling to get it to not bump into me. I finally calibrated it enough to identify me as an object to avoid. If young me could do it, these tech giants definitely can.

It is far and away an optical issue, given that dark absorbs more light. Is it a calibration issue? Maybe. Can infrared imaging be used, given temperature fluctuations in different climates and times of day? Maybe. Is this a case of racism? I'd say you can pull a hamstring with that big of a stretch.

Omg this is so true the soap dispenser thing happened to me for real. I was in the capital shopping and when I got out the soap dispenser did not drop soap on me until I excused myself for a white guy behind me to try and it worked. Darker skin absorbs more light and therefore reflects less light, making it more difficult to detect with optical sensors and image processing software. Maybe the issue is optical physics and not racism.

I just realised something after all these weeks in university (I’m in my first year). We have automatic hand sanitiser dispensers everywhere. Every single damn time I hold my hand under them I never get any. However, a couple times when I’ve been with one of my friends, who’s white, and he’s done that, it’s worked for him. I really just thought this entire time that it was my luck, and we’d laugh over it, but now I realise. And I think I’m furious.

There is a documentary on PBS about this. This girl who is black was an engineer. She found this out and didn’t a presentation on it. They let her go a few months later. She was trying to help improve the technology but no one wanted to listen to her.

I'm color blind, seems people who can see colors don't realize how much society depends on colors. This can also lead to dangerous and life threatening situations. Can we create something like a racial class for color blind people? And then cry racism? No. Certainly society needs to be more aware of what others endure to function in society. Don't conflate that with racism. It only serves to dilute the meaning and makes it harder to identify and address cases of true racism. Am I suffering some injustice because 99% of people can see and function easier? No.

Someone who has no experience in creating, and testing, hardware and software, defaults to racism. Here's another theory. They either didn't come up with enough testing scenarios or they didn't include enough test data (or correct testing data) to ensure all skin tones were handled under different conditions which can contain an astronomical amount of variables. To think that racism is somehow included in the developing of a product is just foolish. It's too expensive to fix an issue after it's been released and it would be embarrassing to the team that missed such an obvious thing to test for. That's why I think this has to do with than environment variable. Also, you do realize that hardware/software community is pretty diverse now and has been for the 20+ years I've been doing it.

Most soap dispensers use infra red sensors, when something interrupts the IR beam, the dispenser activates, regardless of skin color, however, cheaper dispensers that use optical sensors do in fact have a problem with darker skin
