I have a Seiko 7009-3040F which I bought new back in the 90's. In the manual, after warning not to set the day date at night close to where it would normally advance, it said to in the middle position, rotate the crown clockwise to advance the day of the week and counter clockwise to advance the date. Now, clockwise to advance the day of the week did nothing but counter clockwise to advance the day did work so I just wound the time till the day of the week was right and then set the day for 30 years. Now, after 30 years, the watch runs out overnight so I took it into a horologist for cleaning and replacing the main spring, he said you just press the crown like a button to advance the day of the week and that worked. Now the watch had English/French day of the week wheel for 30 years but when I got it back from the horologist, it's English/Spanish, he claims he never changed the day of the week wheel and tried to convince me that it was in French but I had used it in French for 30 years and I have worked in Venezuela and Mexico so I knew it was an English/ French for 30 years and is now in Spanish. I've asked him to find an English/French wheel preferably from Seiko Canada so we'll see if he comes through but I fear I may have to buy an old 7009-3040F for spares, fortunately the Seiko 5 sub brand are dirt cheap even new, indeed buying a new one is less expensive than any maintenance so having it repaired is purely for sentimental reasons, I'd be really upset with a more expensive watch. Now mechanical watches tend to start running fast when magnetized by stray magnetic fields so they need to be degaussed when they are running fast, a jeweler should be able to do it for you but a degausser only costs $15, however no matter how often I degauss it, it still deflects the needle of a compass so getting the magnetization all the way to zero isn't likely. The lack of a hack function on the Seiko 5 means that to set the seconds, you have to let it run down completely and then shake it to wind once the real time seconds matches the second hand on the watch so really you just keep it within a minute of actual time and not to the second.

Interesting story! In actually have a demagnetizer and had to use it on a Baume & Mercier of mine that became magnetized. It immediately resolved the issue.

Bill The HOW-TO Guy hi my watch Stop working completely when I pull out the crown to set the time the hands won't move anymore I try my other watch crowns they don't work eather even I took out the battery out of my watch to put it in for it to work but it dosent work at all it's a cheap watch that I got from Walmart a year ago it been like this since September or October and it dosent work anymore how do I fix this the crown won't change the hands at all

I set the hand near the 6 o'clock position first and then set the date to the day before. I then turn the hand until the date advances to the next day. If I'm setting for 5AM, I stop when I hit 5 the first time. If I am setting for 5PM, I stop when I hit the second 5. If I went again, it'd advance to the next day and I'd have to start all over. Does that make sense?

Hi, I was given an automatic Seiko 4R35 as a gift, and due to excitement I failed to notice the text below the manual "DO NOT CHANGE DATE BETWEEN 9PM and 1AM", unfortunately the hands were set on that time period and I changed the date.
