Hiram, I read an article in Transmission Digest regarding this very issue. What they say in the article is the root cause for this failure is actually a bad combination of materials. They say the material of the pump bushing ain't compatible with the material of the converter neck, so it seizes to the converter. When it does, it moves the pump drive gear off center. You just showed us what happens from there :)

Glad I could help :) I'm afraid I don't remember on the A604 cause I just started getting into the trans side of the business within the last year. I've been reading and studying various transmission literature and watching almost everything you put out like a MADMAN, so I happened to remember the article. Thank you for what you do for all the guys like me out there and keep the videos coming.

first time comment.my 722.9 came to me as a bench job very similarly as the one in this video except more severely damaged. i luckily found a core for the hard parts (the tcu is keyed into the main computer ) i had the original converter rebuild by a reputable re-manufacturer and the bell housing milled smooth and a bushing custom tooled into the new used pump lock tighted it in with an increased press fit thinking it would NEVER spin in the pump

what are the symptoms of this fault as it occuring, and gets too bad eg, noises, burning smells, etc ?

Did you find this to be an inferior bushing inside the torque converter that the input shaft seats into. That would cause the pump input to run out of true and chew the case. As I've found similar issue on a diesel Gl350cdi.

Mine is leaking in the front. Replaced the front seal but still leaking. Maybe the pump seal? Working great. How can I just replace the pump without taking all that apart? Thanks.

Nice video. I have the bearing style (2012 GL350 Bluetec), not the bushing. Leaking in the bell-housing. Took it off, replaced front seal. Still leaking. Re-replaced. Still leaking. Any suggestions? Thanks.

@@nuriin488 - Thanks but I sold it. However…I had the oil pump inspected (taken out) and it was spotless, perfect. Took it to a reputable trans shop. Put it back, still leaking. I believe it was the pump but how can that happen if there are absolutely no signs?

If your driving an overheated engine with no engine oil can that break the transmission pump? The car just shutoff mid driving after the engine broke and seized up

Would slapping on a pump plate fix the issue instead of getting a new Bell housing?

after four months i received this unit back in my lap...so the torque converter was warren teed but this time the machine shop not only made another bushing for it but they also installed two set screws between the new bushing and pump body..... it worked fine until i tested it at full throttle when it locked up the motor. i understand the needle bearing pump upgrade is the cure for this dilemma @ a cost of 800 plus dollars....

I'm in New York. I have a 722.9 (an 07 with 60K) that was going to limp mode with a PO778 stored code. I'm a mechanic 35 years but I don't do transmissions. Only reason I am fixing this one is because it is my wife's midlife crisis car, the SL550 conv. If I take it to Benz I'm not gonna afford the cost of repair. I dropped the valve body out thinking I was just gonna replace the B1 brake control solenoid but I noticed a large head female torx (looks like 8mm bolt) - aluminum that fell on the floor. I see that it is broken off and the broken piece in the recessed hole in the case above the rear of the valve body and the other bolt is not broke. I need to know if I have concern about damage other than the broken bolt. I'm gonna use a left handed drill bit and get the broken piece out (it moves with a screwdriver poke / spin) and just get a new bolt from MB parts. I assume that I can buy just the bolt? I don't know the name of the internal component that these two aluminum bolts retain, (the only bolts that can be seen going up into the case at the rear of the tranny right near the fluid passages) but do you know if this bolt fracture is indicating further damage that I should not assume will be ok if I just install a new bolt? Also, do you know the torque for those bolts?

I had fine aluminum particles in my solenoid screens - is this pump bushing seizure a likely cause? 2006 ML350.

i have a crown vic and reverse has been out for a long time. i was driving it today and noticed the transmission was kind of wining. the noise kept geting louder and the transmission started sliping. i pulled up to a red light and when it turned green i hit the gas and nothing happened. if i let it cool down the wining stops and the car drives for a few minutes then the wining comes back and it wont move. any suggestions on what is wrong? ive been hearing that it might be the pump. it probably doesnt help that it has 220k miles on it either

Hey I have a 08 C63 that is banging or clunking when shifting from R to N to D and vise versa, like there is slack in the rear end or the trans. All things are leading me to trans. Flex discs ok, rear end ok, diff bushings ok. Do you think this could be a toque converter issue, or something in the trans?

My 2000 E320 was doing the same. The problem was a bad Torque converter Lockup solenoid. I changed it and the transmission was back to normal.

Hiram, When the pump bushing seizes itself to the converter, does it damage the pump seal? You said the K2 clutch pack was burnt due to lack of fluid. Is that because of the pump damage or another leak somewhere? Thanks for the videos.
