Yep. We used to call them widow makers. When I was a young mechanic, I'd see the older mechanics avoid certain jobs. Didn't take me long to understand why.

Wish I had a machine like that when I was a tyre technician. We had three and five piece rims. Used to service a fish haulier trailers, and the fish slime running down the tyres, made them very hard work getting the flange, and locking rings off.

I think she’s well aware of the dangers of changing split rim tires…most of the danger is when airing the tire back up and not breaking it down with no air in the tire…I remember when I was a kid, my dad was changing a tire on an old 3 ton truck that had split rims and when he took the tire off he made sure there was no air in it and when he was removing the split ring, chained it in place so it wouldn’t fly off just in case it was under tension and then he put two chains on it when he was airing it back up with the new tire…they aren’t something to take chances with…in any case she did a great job!

When I was in the Army we had some trucks that had split rims. My guys would laugh when if pull the valve stem first to ensure no air was in the tire before breaking it down. No matter what kind if tire it was it went in the cage to be filled. After I saw one dude lose a leg from a tire explosion I figured those cages were a good idea.

If we had those tools when I was in the military as a mechanic life would have been 10× more simpler. We had these special leverage tool to remove the snap ring and a 5-10lbs sledgehammer to break the bead. Reassembly was all sledgehammer

Got a scar on my chin from a split ring. 50 yrs ago. Was done in cages. When the air causes tire to pop in place the rings didn't always hold. I was damn lucky, flew for about 12 ft.
