Automotive Frame Sandblasting
We are getting so close to starting the bodywork, but first we need to prep the truck frame and individual body parts. Removing the engine and having the frame sent out for sandblasting is preformed first by Alpine Products. We are having this done to remove all of the surface rust, and then will apply an epoxy primer for superior protection.
Next, we will be sending the individual body parts to Surface Recovery Technology for a special acid bath. This process is easier on the parts than sandblasting, and will remove all of the paint and surface rust, reducing the amount of time needed while performing the first step of the 4P’s; Preparation.
With over 25 years of experience, Mike Mangan his industry knowledge as he reviews the results on both the truck frame and individual body parts.

I'm rather surprised that the frame was not fully dismantled before sandblasting.

Nice to see a pro at work, what sandblaster (media, psi?) did you use and how long did it take?

Tomasmoravia We had the sandblasting done at Alpine Metal Finishing (alpinemetalfinishing.com/default.htm). We believe they used 80 Grit Aluminum Oxide Grit at 75 psi. It took between 2-3 hours to do the entire frame.

Only issue with sandblasting is getting media where it is not wanted. In between leafs on the springs and all joints and pivots. It gets forced in at high pressure.

All the rust and debris on the frame between the cross bracing still exists. I just did a Ford Ranger frame and had to remove all that to get in there properly. Otherwise it'll rot where the braces attach.

All the body panels was sealed with epoxy primer. The chassis was painted with chassis saver, which was painted over bare metal. It comes in satin and gloss black, also silver.

@Finish 1st What is the primer you put directly onto the bare steel to prevent it form rusting?

Why is is when you sandblast something it looks like grey primer?
@Finish1st

Because you are stripping all of the rusted areas out and also stripping all of the paint, primer and factory ecoats to bare metal. So why it might look like primer sometimes, it's really just bare metal.

The sandblasting process is very aggressive. It gets into everything. It can and will warp 20 gauge or thinner metal that is flat. Curved surfaces have more rigidity. With heavy media it is creating some heat, but is also like thousands of tiny hammer blows so on thinner metal it stretches the metal causing it to warp. The sand gets into everything so parts like ball joints, tie rods, brakes, and related will probably be destroyed. We did not strip it to bare frame to make it easier to move.

No you cant warp the panels by sand blasting them, they never get hot with just sand blasting... But have the frame dipped if your dipping the panels!

+Toms Chevelle Hey Tom, we actually had a 1957 Chevy hood come back warped from sandblasting. Be cautious because even the sandblaster will tell you if the sheet metal is too thin, it can warp. Also - The frame on this truck was too large to be acid-dipped. Thanks for the comment!

Finish 1st Really? I heard that the heat warping from sand blasting was a myth, I guess I was wrong. Have you see the videos showing dustless water blasting? It seems like that might be worth a shot on a big frame like that. maybe. Thanks for the interesting video.

Finish 1st Your welcome. Its cool... uses water and glass media to blast anything without warping..
