During The ICE 2024 in St. Moritz, which has been cancelled due to weather conditions, I filmed this 1954 One-Off Pegaso Z102 SERIES II.
This particular Pegaso made its debut at the San Remo Concours d'Elegance, presented with pride by Pierre Saoutchik himself and was thereafter shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1954. The only cabriolet in its series, it was a one-off creation, capturing attention with its hand-built Saoutchik coachwork and striking ice blue color. Less than 90 Z-102s were built from 1951 to 1958, adding to its exclusivity.
The 1954 Pegaso Z102 Series II Cabriolet, chassis 0136, stands as a rare gem in automotive history, showcasing the brilliance of engineer Wilfredo Ricart and the artistry of French coachbuilder Saoutchik. With its unique four-cam, alloy V-8 2.8-liter engine producing 240 HP, the Z-102 was a pinnacle of performance in the early to mid-1950s.
The Z-102 was Wilfredo Ricart's masterpiece, featuring innovative engineering like a four-cam V-8 engine, a rarity in road cars of that era. Its high performance allowed it to outshine competitors, making it an iconic sports car of its time. The complexity of construction, coupled with the exquisite coachwork, made the Z-102 a costly venture for Pegaso, leading to the project's eventual halt.
In 1958 this beauty was transformed into a berlinetta and in the 1990s, a meticulous restoration by Automotive Restorations Inc. returned the car to its exact original configuration, presented in a concours-worthy condition.
The elegance of the Pegaso Z102 Series II Cabriolet extends to its design, featuring a distinctive radiator grille, forward-sloping headlights, and a beautifully contoured rear. The interior boasts a wooden steering wheel, large round dials, and leather seats with impeccable craftsmanship. The engine compartment proudly showcases the magnificent four-cam 8-cylinder V-shaped engine.
The Series II Pegaso, particularly chassis 0136, epitomizes the perfect balance of style and performance. Pierre Saoutchik's refined design, especially the ultra-low windshield and side-glass, contributes to its daring and stunning aesthetic.
Today, this exceptional car's engineering and rarity make it a captivating presence at concours d'elegance events, representing a bygone era of automotive excellence. The Pegaso Z102 Series II Cabriolet continues to evoke admiration, embodying the legacy of a brand that disappeared too soon but left an indelible mark on the world of luxury sports cars.
