For the repair of your autopilot, it is good to see that there are still people able to make a real repair and not just a standard exchange of parts… Good shop to remember 👍👍👍

I ran a thriving business with my wife for ten years. It got to the point where it was us or the business. We disbanded the business. I imagine that sailing is the same way - small space - constant companionship - it's not easy. However - I've watched hundreds of youtube videos through the years - and that was the first honest exchange I've seen. Thanks for keeping it real.

Be careful when using the strap. I have one. The same one. The threading on the loop at the end is not strong enough compared to the rating on the strap. Use a clove hitch around a tree or any method that constricts itself instead of just relying on that clip which relies on threading. Also you can buy from the UK 3 ton rated 50m strap for about 30£. Make sure the 50m is continuous and not in two or more pieces. And you can also buy rated buckles that will hold it in place for a few bucks. A great deal for extra strong cheap safety lines. You should also get yourself 6 meters of 8mm chain for rocks and chafe.
@SailingABSea5 жыл бұрын
We really like your idea of getting a length of 8mm chain to prevent chafing on rocks. Thanks Mat. 👍

If Niall was correct and 2diodes were blown then it is highly likely it was connected to 12 volts with reverse polarity which burned the diodes and fried the integrated circuit (chip).
@SailingABSea5 жыл бұрын
Yeah someone else mentioned that Norman. It's working fine since the repair, so do you think it's possible that the reverse polarity was an issue on the previous boat it was installed on and we just got unlucky that it was on its last legs when we got it?

If the repair tech said your diodes burned out then it is likely the last repair tech hooked the power up somehow in reverse polarity. Diodes help electricity to only flow in one direction...likely they did their job for a bit then fried. If you keep frying autopilots either your power supply wires are hooked up in reverse or perhaps the insulation has burned off and the wires are touching.

Hey Rita, can't remember the name or location of the chandler because we went into them all. The only thing I (Baz) can remember is that it was not on the main street where we got our autopilot repaired, it was on the edge of it all near a street corner.

Have you still got the ST7000 head? Can that be repaired by Nial (?) to give you a working standby head? If you haven’t still got it why did you accept a lesser head from Raymarine, Istanbul? Did they have the ST 7000 back for refurbishment (hopefully a more successful refurbishment than they managed on the ST 6000)? Could you get it back?
@SailingABSea5 жыл бұрын
Hi Wynn, the ST6002 is actually and upgrade from the ST7000. Because it was so old we binned it, in hindsight it would've been a good idea to have Nail look at it to see if he could repair it.

Unfortunately these days are over in Turkey. Currently in Didim and you can basically call it rip off city. The simplest of simple work will cost you here between 1000 and 2000 euro. That is where it starts. Something that online is being sold for 166 USD will cost a whopping 1500 euro. A simple bracket for an alternator ? 2500 euro. 5 liter of engine oil ? 155 euro. Even in chandler shops this practice happens. The other day I bought 2 anti-rat discs for 350 TL a piece. Came back 2 days later for 2 more, different sales person and all of a sudden the price was ...............200 TL a piece (same disc). Adjusting injectors for the engines ? In Greece 10 euro per injector, here in Didim 50 euro per injector, so needless to say that almost nothing got done here. We will go back to Greece, have most of the work done there and other jobs will wait until winter season, then we will simply fly in a mechanic from the Netherlands. That is still 1/3 of the price they would charge in Greece and 1/7 of the price in Turkey. Both countries are on the road to self destruction when it comes to boating. Not very clever.
