Jeff, I just came across this video and thought I'd share something with you and the viewers... Take this way of checking the displacement as a 'Rough Idea',,, "as it being a Factory stock engine" Point being... Back in the Late '80's,, I bought a '75 F-100 pickup from a Gentleman, that was his son's.... His son had passed away a couple years prior and everything was being sold...All he could tell me about the truck, was that his boy had put headers and a Holley 4 Barrel on it and He thought it had a 360 or 390 engine, but didn't know which... just that it was a Big Block and his son was planning on Drag racing it.... After buying it and getting it home, I had my Stepdad take a look at it....(He worked in a FORD truck assembly plant for over 15 years back when these were being manufactured)....He did this same procedure that you just did and told me that I had a 360 engine....and the way it idled, that it had a Non-stock cam in it..... Anyway.... About 2 years later, I had a blown Head gasket and when we tore into it,, we found that it was NOT a 360, But a 390 with domed pistons that the man's son had installed.... Never would have known if we hadn't tore into it....Just sayin'... Keep up the great work, love the videos.....

I had a 75 F-350 supercab, the first year Ford produced a lot of Supercabs and started to build crewcabs. Now you can hardly find a regular cab truck! 74 was the last year of the in cab fuel tanks, and 76 they introduced the over the shoulder seat belts. Mine had a 460" engine and C-6 from the factory, as well as the much desired 3.73:1 rear axle. I would turn around 2,700 RPM at 65 MPH, so a 3.54 would have been much better, and get better MPG. I rebuilt the distributor, and got a LOT more power out of the engine, rebuilding the distributor is something that should be done with a truck of that era! Surprising how much more power it made afterwards! The book that came with my 75 described all the options, and there where 3 or 4 engines in the truck, from 302, 360, 390, and mine at 460". They described how many more pounds are added to the front and rear axle, so you could calculate how many pounds are available to carry a camper! Even the second battery option, they said add 55 pounds to the front axle, and take away 7 from the rear axle.

You sed there no way to tell if its a 428? The 410 & 428 both had 3.98 stroke vs. The 390/406/427s 3.78 stroke. So the same method can tell you what stroke it is. The 352 & 360 both use the same stroke crank, just diffarent bore. But you can usually go by the year for those engines. The 360 took the place of the 352 so if its 67 its probably a 352 but if its a 68 its probably a 360. There is probably a small grey area in there.

Jeff, I have a question which I know you can answer. Not realted to this video but one you did previously. I have a 67 Mustang CVT, factory PS, A/T. It has the early 67 long shaft steering. I am going to replace it and I know there are several options. I saw a video where you went with the Borgeson steering box. And it appeared to me that you used the parts which were already there (Pittman arm, cylinder, control valve). I was wondering if I could use the Borgeson steering box and keep my current parts, rebuild my control valve ande use my current Pittman arm. If I do this will I have to go with the Borgeson power steering pump and change linkages and other things, or just be able to replace the box? Another alternative is to use the Formoco steering box which I have, cut off the shaft and install a coupler so I could use the IDIDIT steering column. This would be "easier" since I could retain the parts I have which are in good shape, but I am still left with the original steering box which is prone to leak. The one I have looks to be in good shape and the linkage feel good with no skips or hangups. The engine is out of the car and I am rebuilding it from the ground up, so before I replace the engine (302) and transmission (C4), now seems like a good time to tackle this issue. I have learned alot from watching your videos, and trust your opinion in this matter. Thanks for the help
@AutoRestoMod6 жыл бұрын
I believe Borgeson offers a pitman arm end cap that allows the use of the Borgeson box with the old power steering pitman arm. We would use a new/rebuilt Ford pump or the Borgenson; your old pump has trash in it that can contaminate the new box. The other components will stay stock. You won't need to change anything. If you stay stock PS get the alignment shop to give you 3 degrees of positive caster. We achieved this with 3/8 of shims on the front bolt of the upper A-arm.

@AutoRestoMod5 жыл бұрын
The automatic part is where the problem comes in. Since the FE was long gone by the time the Automatic overdrive came into use, the only way to get even four gears is to buy a AOD and get an adapter plate OR invest in a Gear Vendors overdrive which bolts to your existing C6 and gives overdrive and can split the lower gears on the C6.

You might be better off looking for a fuel injected engine with a 4 speed automatic. They tend to get better MPG, and have much more power than your 360. And change the rear axle ratio to something like a 3.07:1 or at the most 3.54:1. With a 4.10:1, the engine will spin way to fast to get good mileage. But the lower RPM, along with a higher HP motor, you will still have power and get decent MPG if you try hard enough. My Ford Edge has a 3.5L V6, 265 factory HP rating, and runs around 1,500 RPM in 6th gear at 65 MPH. I get 18 - 22 MPG with it. Wish I could put one of those motors in a older looking truck, it would run great!

So there is absolutely no way to tell if it’s a 352, 360, or 390 just by looking at it? I’ve taken my truck to 4 different mechanics, they have all told me that it’s 390 just by taking a gander. One of them is an older gentleman, told me that just by looking at (I don’t remember) that he could tell it was a 390. So idk if this is bs or not without actually doing what you did, or tearing apart the actual engine.

Only way to tell is the way we show. Now that these vehicles are so old, blocks have been changed, 352's bored out to 390s...SO the best way? the old stick in the hole...

running the casting numbers may help.certain heads were used only on certain engines.what is beautiful is the heads can be swap from a 352 all the way up to the 428. the 429 is a different engine type i think it a 385 block i could be wrong

Gas mileage. Don't expect more than about 12 MPG out of a 360 in a truck. You CAN get more but on average, they are not great at sipping fuel.

THIS METHOD IS ROUGH AT BEST. GOOD LUCK CENTERING A DOWEL IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE TWICE. ESPECIALLY WHEN MOST ALL THESE PISTONS IN THESE FE MOTORS HAVE VALVE RELIEFS OR DISHES. PULL THE PAN AND READ THE NUMBER OFF THE CRANK. ALSO NOT A GT IT WOULD HAVE 3 HOLES PER EXHAUST PORT NOT JUST TWO.
@AutoRestoMod6 жыл бұрын
We were not looking for a hard number on displacement, Just a quick way to identify if it is a 390 or 360--something that could be done while buying a car. You are correct in stating that you will have to remove the pan to find out more. I misspoke about the GT part of it, you are correct that the GT head would have the 3 bolt holes, the 360 head would have the boss but not be drilled. Not an FE expert by any stretch. I didn't bother looking for casting numbers or anything.

Jim, your wrong?? The 410 isn't a 4.000 bore, its a 4.05 bore with the 3.98 stroke. The 390 ,406, & 427 use 3.78 stroke not 3.75. Alot of people just say 3 3/4 to idacate its a 390. But actual stroke is 3.78. The bore of the 406 & 428 is 4.130. The 427 is 4.230.

Bought a 71 F100 and I'm never selling it. My understanding is that the 360 & 390 use exactly the same block, so getting a 390 out of a 360 is as easy as swapping the 360 crank (and heads) for the 390 crank (and heads). Supposedly, the 390 block (as it's called) will also take a 428 crank, though you can't get 428 CI out of it b/c the block doesn't have a deep enough stroke (lower deck height from the factory).
@AutoRestoMod5 жыл бұрын
The 352, 360, 390 and 428 share a common block, major difference is the stroke and bore on them: 352 4.002 in (101.7 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm) 360 4.052 in (102.9 mm) 3.500 in (88.9 mm) 390 4.052 in (102.9 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm) 406 4.130 in (104.9 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm) 410 4.054 in (103.0 mm) 3.98 in (101 mm) 427 4.232 in (107.5 mm) 3.784 in (96.1 mm) 428 4.132 in (105.0 mm) 3.98 in (101 mm). The thing that is an issue is wall thickness. You CAN use a 390 block and bore it out to 428, but some 390s are too thin in areas due to core shift. Sonic the block and have it checked for adequate thickness before you bore. Cylinder heads are all the same dimensionally but have different ports, combustion chambers and valve sizes.
