This anime/manga has made such a cultural impact on people that: “A Taiwanese man who helped to stop a knife attack on a train in Taichung city has cited an anime hero as his inspiration, local media reported. Mr Hsu Rui-hsian, dubbed Long-Haired Bro by local media, was one of 17 civilians who stopped a knife-wielding man on a train near Taichung City Hall station in May. ‘Even if I had to do it again, I’d make the same choice’ said Mr Hsu, a fitness coach and powerlifter. ‘It’s what the hero Himmel would have done.’”

himmel's legacy transcends beyond just in fictional world. bro so goated not only he inspired a man to stop an attack in public transportation, he also inspired elementary school kids to do their homeworks when they procrastinated. many also tried to try to be reconnect to their friends, families after watching frieren. he, to me personally, also taught that you don't have to do grand thing to leave behind a memory, just "insignificant little thing" is enough.

I think the reason why they went for 28 episodes instead of the usual 24 eps is so the ending of the season will fit perfectly. Also the director and animators deserve a huge credit, in the manga it feels goodbye for other characters but in the anime it felt as goodbye for the anime and us viewet. It was perfectly executed.

7:19 Good detail in the anime: When Wirbel mentioned Himmel, Frieren's eye flinched a little
@WonSab
@WonSab Ай бұрын
Two fun echoes of earlier stuff in this episode: First, Serie giving Übel another instance where she has an exchange with another character about whether or not something is necessary (previous instances being Wirbel in the first exam and Denken in the second). Given the direct reduction in her kill-rate over time after the first exam, there's probably something to be said about her picking up some metaphorical restraint along with learning Sorganiel from the guy who uses it to hold off on killing people. Second, Frieren calling mages who only know how to fight "awkward" - she makes that same observation about warriors back in the episode with Stark's birthday, and on their way into Aüßerst Stark observes that a lot of the qualities Frieren says are important for a mage sound like warrior qualities. Bonus third round: Serie being disappointed that most of her apprentices never reached her level but not being able to tell them how she feels about them brings to mind Lord Orden's answer to Stark about his surviving son Mut ("He'll be a better swordsman than me some day." "You should tell him that." "I did. It went to his head and he stopped improving.") and Kanne's flashback to her flight class with Lawine ("If it'll help you fly, I'll be as nice to you as you want." "So you can fly after all. I'm done being nice to you.") There's a lot of rhyming history in Frieren and I look forward to when we can finally see these folks again in Season 2.
@Diablos-pi2qy
@Diablos-pi2qy Ай бұрын
Regarding your bonus point on Serie, I can agree that praise may stunt growth and make someone overconfident/lazy/etc. However, I don't think that Serie's method is correct either. She's (almost) actively/constantly insulting her students (she doesn't feel that way but they can't tell that). This kinda creates a toxic relationship. See instead how Frieren is hard on Fern when it comes to it (like pushing her in Ep3 practice duel that they had and admonishing her for not reading the magical history textbook/tome), but also praises her and is honest with her like at the end of Ep28.
@WonSab
@WonSab Ай бұрын
@@Diablos-pi2qy I definitely wasn't making a value judgment on Serie's approach so much as observing its place in a trend - Frieren as a story is also quite direct about praise and emotional support being for more than just children (see Frieren's interactions with Sein and the sick episode shortly after that).

The author had good editors helping them to structure the manga and perhaps also thought ahead for an adaptation to anime how to set up chapters to get things neatly packaged.
@rediciclepop4639
@rediciclepop4639 Ай бұрын
@@Airwave2k2Is that even true? Every arc in the manga has always had a good concluding chapter. I don’t think it necessarily was made with the anime in mind. I mean you can even see it in episode 13 with the end of the Aura arc.
@Airwave2k2
@Airwave2k2 Ай бұрын
@@rediciclepop4639 I assume it to be very likely since Frieren is published in Shōnen Sunday with decades long experience since 1959. They have the staff to work with the authors from the start of the publication. I guess strongly they recognized the potential and gave advice for structure from early on to fit. Also with winning an award I guess the decision for an anime adaptation was more so on the table than before. And from there on rounding it out to fit in the 11-14 episode per season structure was taken into consideration even more.
@rediciclepop4639
@rediciclepop4639 Ай бұрын
@@Airwave2k2 I mean Shounen Sunday was in a crisis with its editorial staff for the past few years and only got its stuff together recently with the previous editor-in-chief. It’s not impossible that editors were involved but I’d rather credit the actual writer, Kanehito Yamada. It’s clear they know how to write a story. Hell, the editor even said they barely had to make any edits to the drafts they’re given. It’s not like the arcs are even structured to fit proper season lengths. The series notably had 28 episode that’s why out of the stand 24-26 that would come from most 2-cour seasonals. The next season is actually going to pose a bit of a challenge because at the pace of the adaptation, a standard length is going to position the end in a weird spot.
@Airwave2k2
@Airwave2k2 Ай бұрын
@@rediciclepop4639 You are right that the author will though of it too. It is not to credit the editors, but they are something to bounce of ideas, give ideas and advise. Having a crisis doesn't mean all experience is gone, it just means that the focus shifts to the highly valued prospects to get out of it eventually. How the decision was made to conclude the arc I don't know. How the segments of the exam arc work they also could have cut after the second exam and opened a 3rd cour with the 3rd part of the exam. The release was unconventional to begin with the premier of 4 episodes in one and a 2 cour that is. Maybe at some point information comes out how the decisions were made. But going back to the 28th episode that at its end is a send off written in seems to be deliberate with an anime adaptation in mind and conclusion for the arc. It just worked out that this is the best way to adapt the manga and everybody involved agreed to it I guess.

Frieren is the only anime for a long time where it got me excited every week again waiting for the next episode. Before, I'm pretty much tired of anime for many years because i've watched so many animes and probably have watched 1000+ of them(i've been watching anime continously for almost 20 years). Especially when almost all of anime are following the same trope over and over again. That's why even popular animes now that alot of people get hyped for like MHA, chainsaw man, JJK, solo leveling, demon slayer, etc. I can't even finish those because of how many generic tropes they have (it make sense though, why change the tropes if it still works right? They still make money doing those tropes) I can't even finish most of anime now i just ended up just watching 2 or 3 episodes i immediately get bored and stop watching. That's why I'm happy that watching frieren somehow made me feel the joy of watching anime again.

Aw... here we are. The end to a great first season! I think Serie's mentoring always was battle oriented. That's the way she taught Flamme and that's the way that Flamme taught Frieren. Frieren loved magic but after training for a long time under Flamme, when she's old, Frieren responds somewhat, because there's no joy in combat magic. She followed Flamme's directive to not be known and just keep a low profile, until Himmel and his party showed up. That chance let Frieren rediscover the joy of magic and searching for it. Land's interview was great phoning it in and Methode's was hilarious. She and Sein would make a great pair. But we see in the credits he's probably with that lady on the beach... The manga is still going on and they proabably have enough for another season.

There _is_ a manga. It's far from finished, but there's a lot of content left, at least for one more season, maybe two, and it's just as good as what we saw in season one, if not more (the _fourth_ fan favourite character after Himmel, Frieren, and the mimics will probably appear in season two, for instance, as hopefully will a couple of the best arcs in the series so far). It's currently on an indeterminate hiatus... but it's done that before; last time it lasted about six months, and it was due to the author collaborating with the development of the anime, so... maybe we can be hopeful for a second season..? And if not, well, as I said, what's been published of the manga _is_ still great, even if we were left on a bit of a cliff hanger before the hiatus.

@@Circle9ru Good point why did he not actively peruse to become famous. I don't know, but he is clearly from a moral perspective not the guy to take the best decisions anyway since being a murder to become famous is out of the question for most individuals. I think we didn't see enough of him to make a judgment. You see Genau and other 1st class mages are operating in the north, so Lernen may also did do demon subjugation there. We don't know. Or maybe he is to bound assisting Serie with the leading the Continental Magic Association and for that has rather become a bureaucrat.

Important lore that a lot of people get wrong (complete but spoiler-free version) Short version; Visualization is important, but it's not the be-all-end-all and Frieren doesn't fall for mimics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long version; (I) The magic system and especially the thing about visualization A spoiler-free explanation of the magic system in the Frieren world is as follows: There are 4 components to a mage's magic-casting in the Frieren world: (1) Mana: How much mana/magical-energy they have. Note that other than a mage's initial mana-capacity, which is affected by the following; (a) The mana in each of the parents when the child was conceived (and maybe even the mother's mana until birth). This is because mana is to some extent inherited (eg, Ehre benefitting from being Lernen's grandaughter). (b) MAYBE your race (ie, demon vs elf vs dwarf vs human). However, it's unknown how this affects your initial mana-capacity (eg, Flamme in her 20s-30s? and Aura in her 500+ years of age, had similar amounts of mana). (c) Other currently unknown factors (eg, maybe the Goddess' Blessing since Heiter had a ton of mana even in his 20s?). a mage's mana-capacity is directly proportional to the amount of time that they have been training it (which correlates to their age). (2) Control: How much mana and how precisely they can control it. This also includes controlling spells after they've been fired off (eg, Frieren curving her Basic Offensive Magic around Fern's Basic Defensive Magic). Note that even raw mana can be used to achieve simple yet effective results if a mage has a high degree of control (eg, Frieren defending her neck against Draht's wire). This point will be further expanded upon in a later arc as well. Another very important case of mana control, is the act of limiting output. Any decent mage (with a good amount of mana control) can temporarily limit their mana (for the purpose of surprising a foe). This is called Concealment. It's basically a mage reducing their mana output from 100% to as close to 0% as they can, while they try to sneak attack an enemy. However, after the sneak attack, there is no value to doing this, since an enemy with magical abilities can probably detect that the attacker is reducing their mana output from the fluctuations that they see through their own mana detection (and they can even detect the attacker's unconcealed mana level, thus making the limiting completely useless at this point). Examples: (a) Fern sneak attacking Lugner in S01E08. (b) Lugner sneak attacking Fern in S01E09. Suppression, on the other hand, is the technique of limiting your mana output at all times (to say 10%). This is a useful technique because it can easily create situations where your enemies underestimate you. A mage that performs Suppression, can also do Concealment and how that works is as follows: They reduce from 10% to as close to 0% as they can, and then go back to 10% after they lift their Concealment. Now, the reason why Suppression isn't feasible for most HUMANs (and here I literally mean just humans and not dwarves and definitely not elves) is that to be able to fool demons and monsters, you either need to be very talented at mana control like Flamme and Fern, or have a very long time (ie, at least a few centuries) to practice Suppression to reduce the fluctuations as much as possible like Serie and Frieren. Thus, making this technique not worth it, since the return for your time-investment is so little. As Serie says, you're better off training other things. As for why Suppression is a dishonesty and mockery of magic, consider the following examples, which are somewhat equivalent to what mages practicing this technique are doing: (a) A martial master taking part in a beginner martial arts tournament. (b) A soldier disguising themself as a civilian and then attacking a target. Basically, mages performing Suppression are hiding their power to create a situation where their opponent is led to underestimating them. This would make them dishonest, but also shows them to be not truly proud of their achievements in magic to be confronting their foes straight with their full force and without trickery. (3) Spell: The magical formulas that they know and are able to use. Examples: Basic Offensive/Defensive Magic, Reelseiden. Note that the spell formula dictates what is possible or impossible. Examples: (a) Basic Offensive Magic cannot pierce dragon scales or Basic Defensive Magic, regardless of the attacker's visualization. Otherwise, Frieren would've taught Fern how to do it when she asked Fern to attack the Solar Dragon in S01E05 in the former case, and Basic Defensive Magic would actually be useless in the latter case. (b) Frieren's spell to clean a bronze statue not being usable for a stone statue. If it was purely a visualization based system, then there is absolutely no reason for why Frieren wouldn't be able to use the folk spell in S01E16 to clean Kraft's & Unknown-Priest's statues. (4) Visualization: Needed to activate/use a spell since a mage cannot make something happen if they can't clearly/exactly picture the outcome. This is actually very similar to how it is in real life as well. Note that a weak visualization might further limit a spell, but a strong visualization cannot strengthen a spell. Examples: (a) Regardless of Aura's visualization, her scales were already tilting towards Frieren, even though Aura was unaware that Frieren had more mana at that point. If it was a purely visualization based system, then Aura should've been able to dominate anyone including Frieren. (b) Ubel's visualization is ONLY taking advantage of Reelseiden's formula to cut anything in a 5? meter radius. Even she is unable to fully maximize the spell, since she cannot visualize cutting Basic Defensive Magic. However, she can visualize cutting more things than most people, so she's still a very proficient user of this spell. -------------------------------------------------- In summary, the visualization component of the magic is just like in real life; you will surely fail if you have a 'bad' mindset, but a 'good' mindset does NOT guarantee success (ie, a 'good' mindset is a necessary, but insufficient condition for success since external factors are still a thing). Visualization is important, but it's not the be-all-end-all. Spells determine what's possible or not, and a mage's visualization can make them achieve between 0% to 100% of a spell's potential. They cannot just bs visualize/imagine themself into winning and/or doing-the-impossible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, there is technically one more component, which may fall under Control, but since I'm not convinced that it definitely does (and also because it's not completely crucial for just casting magic alone as a singular mage), I've written it below as a separate point: (5) Detection: How accurately a mage can detect mana in a certain radius with themself at the center. This is extremely important for battle, since it relates to: (a) Finding hidden enemies (who are probably concealing their mana). (b) Becoming aware of surprise attacks not caught by the physical senses (eg, being shot from behind). (c) Not underestimating a strong foe who's pretending to be weaker than they are (ie, mages who suppress their mana like Serie, Flamme, Frieren, and Fern). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above info is from: S01E02: First half of the episode with Frieren teaching Fern. S01E03: Second half of the episode on Killing Magic. S01E05: Second half of the episode with the Solar Dragon. S01E08: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E09: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E10: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E15: First half of the episode on Goddess' Magic. S01E16: Second half of the episode with the statue cleaning quest. S01E20: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E21: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E26: Pretty much all of it. :) S01E27: Second half of the episode with the CMA heads meeting. (CMA = Continental Magic Association & CMA heads = Serie + 1st class mages) S01E28: Credits showing Ehre introducing Lernen to Wirbel, which when combined with the info from S01E20 with Ehre & Wirbel, allows us to conclude that Lernen is Ehre's grandfather. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally, there are a few additional minor notes for points 2 and 3 (ie, Control and Spell) that I have not included due to being spoilers for anime-onlys. (II) Frieren vs Mimics Putting aside jokes and memes, I have seen far too many people and even video essays on KZbin (some of which claiming to be serious analysis types) thinking/saying that Frieren falls for mimics. The truth however is; Frieren doesn't fall for mimics. She chooses to take the risk because she doesn't lose anything of value (and because the mimic-check spell is only 99% accurate). She loses a little time while in the mimic and then later when fixing her hair (but she doesn't care about that because she has practically infinite time), and suffers a little reputation damage (but she doesn't care about how others view her all that much). On the other hand, she may gain something. In summary, she loses nothing and may gain something so why not try them all?

The last scene of Himmel, turning his back with the cape is the same scene we see in his funeral. Like the final "bracket" of the story telling is closed. Full circle. I see that they were curious about the false granddaughter relationship between LAUFEN and DENKEN but no one mentioned or noticed if there was a true blood relationship of Granddaughter and Grandfather between EHRE and LERNE. Ehre feels a great attachment to WILBER (infatuation or gratitude) believing that they would not pass the first test. When she heard that Wilber turned around on the boat, she wanted to keep him by confessing that his grandfather is one of the first-class magicians. We also get a reference to this when Ehre fights Fern and comments that her style is old-fashioned but regional as if she were fighting a veteran magician like her grandfather. All this is confirmed in the final images of the last episode where we see how Enrhe introduces Wilber to her grandfather, the magician Lerne. Since I think they will get along well as they are both magicians who only know how to kill and fight.

There's actually an isekai reincarnation light novel where the main character, a high elf who will live for a thousand years (either that or 10K, but I think it was just 1K) decides to pick up sculpting a few books into the series to honor the memories of the people he met who have since passed on. I like how this series treats the "minor convenience" magic as legendary spells from the mythic era in contrast to how all the other game-like high fantasy series treat "daily life magic" as something even Villager A can do, since it's not something as crazy as combat magic. Nah, being able to skip "Physical Labor: Laundry" with Real Magic That Affects You is great! You literally gain hours in a day to do something else.

Have not read the Manga, but believe that Übel already learned the clone spell, and it's just sticking to Land because she find him fascinating. Serie's memory of Flamme running in front of her means that, deeply she knows Flamme was always ahead and managed to achieve the main theme of the story: 'true immortality' - Legacy. Which is essentially friends + leaving a lasting impact in the life of future generations. Without Flamme and Himmel, Frieren would like had become another disillusioned Serie. Still unsure the role of the "Goddess" and why Priest skills are so different to mages, though.

The hilarious thing i just realized is that with Frieren failing the 1st class mage exam and now being banned from all Magic Association facilities for 1000 years, she's never going to even get certified as a mage at all. (To be fair, she probably wasn't going to get certified anyway.)

They're keeping elves' lifespan pretty vague. (no manga spoilers please). It seems like Serie and especially Kraft are 1000s of years old. Next to them, Frieren seems like the elf equivalent of in her early 20s or so, even though we know she's probably ~1500 years old. Kraft is old enough for his legend to be all but forgotten about, he could easily be 3000-5000 years old

@pwarner I wasn't implying that 1000 years would be the rest of Frieren's life. I just don't expect she'll be back in 1001 years with a sudden need to be a 1st class mage. As for the life expectancy of elves, it seems strongly implied that elves simply don't die of old age or experience age-related degradation of their health. Or if they do, it happens so slowly that statistically they're drastically more likely to die if other causes first.
