About 10 or 12 years ago, a friend of mine had one these cars up at his house in Connecticut. We took a short drive, and we didn't go that crazy. The car felt like an absolute beast. Later that night, I had trouble sleeping in a strange house. I went out to the garage an just stared and looked all over the car for about two hours. It was mesmerizing.

But you stand there looking at 1969-72 917 Porsche or 63 Ferrari 250P and the of coarse the Ford GT 40. All of them are world beaters. They’ve been around the world and dominated their group. You can touch them, smell them. lol That sounds weird I guess. To me they are mesmerizing.

People are idiots, and driving on *any* public road is always inherently unpredictable. Although you're 72 and maybe not familiar with games but please do yourself a favor and look into Gran Turismo 7. It's laser scanned vehicles in laser scanned real race tracks. With the new technological advancements in Virtual Reality, you have one of the closest feelings of driving in real life that you can pay for. Getting a wheel, pedals, cockpit, vr headset, PlayStation 5 may be an initially a large cost, top of the line youre looking at 2k-3k depending on your wheel and cockpit but you have access to over 400 cars including this GT, the original GT40 from the 60s and many other all time classic cars over automotive history. It is well worth the experience and a whole hell of a lot cheaper than trying to rent or purchase those cars, some which are just plain unobtainable (McLaren F1 for example or the F40s, F50s). Look into it, don't be afraid and if you need some help just reach out. We're a large community and many of us are in the advanced age 50-70+. More than you realize. Plus it doesn't have to be competitive, you can just grab your favorite car and go to your favorite track. Gaming isn't all about 13 year old kids screaming obscenities. Gran Turismo 7 has an average age of 35 for ppl playing.

The guillotine doors, as you called them, have a historical background: as soon as the race started, the drivers who had been standing at the starting area until then had to run across the track to their cars. Here Ford's innovative door design helped the drivers to get in faster. However, this traditional start was abolished after Ford's 4th Le Mans victory in 1969. But at the same time (1969), Ford driver Jacky Ickx, protested against this type of race start, in that he and his team-mate Jackie Oliver only "walked" slowly to the car and did not run, as they considered this relay start to be too dangerous. They were also to be proved right, British amateur driver John Woolfe, who was driving the only privately entered 917, had a fatal accident. In addition, debris from the car hit Amon's Ferrari, among others. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful reminisce of Ford's 4 victories at the time and is still something very special. A thoroughly iconic car that is part of many childhood dreams!

The 2006 Lincoln Navigator has the same engine as the GT (5.4L Triton, without the super charger or manual transmission, of course) and that beast was 3 tons of fun. Ours could walk away from almost anything on the highway. Though basically the same vehicle, our Expedition drives totally different, and the newer (2013) 5.4L doesn't seem to be quite the same powerhouse as the 2006. The thing I really enjoyed with the Navigator was pulling a 3,000-pound camper in the mountains. I'd set the cruise around 70 and all those "Fast" little cars that impatiently zipped by me a few minutes before on the downhill would disappear in the rear-view mirror going up the next big grade. And even muffled, that was a good sounding, and running, engine. I sold it about a year ago and have been kicking myself ever since. I would rather have a GT, though. (Wonder if I could get a trailer hitch for it? Probably not.) Take care.

I'm a fan of Fords, I won't deny that, and my everlasting dream was to own one day a Mustang GT500 or Eleanor, the classic ones from late 70's of course, or this very model in the video. I mean cars like this are pure engineering masterpieces and I cannot imagine that one day we won't be allowed to drive them because of the Greens. Hell, I'm terryfied at the thought that there will be no more petrol cars of any kind, just bloody washing machines on wheels (which will do to classic cars what smartphones did to telephones, digital cameras etc. - practicaly killed them). I don't want to start any heated discussion here, just pouring out my sadness at the ever-faster changing world and that all this is happening without me/ us having no say in it - I just hope it won't end the way it did in The Time Machine, by Wells.

The Ford GT is my favorite car of all time. I turned 60 this year. My dad was a race engine and high performance street engine builder in the late '60's through the mid '90's. His customers and friends were really middle class, V8 muscle car guys. I didn't come to appreciate the GT-40 until later in life. When the Ford GT came out in '04, I learned the history of Ford at LeMans. I was glad to see Ford come out with this car, that could rival any exotic mid engine car, and do it in such a clearly stated American way! It's the same feeling as when the Dodge Viper came out, and we could say we finally had a world class contender in the supercar arena!

Totally agree awesome point of driver perspective but do watch where you clip things, the GT having its speedo off to the right your dash clip covered the view of the gauge until the very top and I am sure a bunch of us were interested to watch the needle climb! Great job and very minor point.

I had a much less powerful manual of a different brand that was like that in terms of just being pure FUN to drive. You and the car were a team and you could FEEL everything - it was like the car was an extension of you. Therapy.

You don’t need tons of power to have fun. A good, balanced car is fun!

Ever since my Uncle had a 2.8 injection Capri in the 80's, I've been a ford fan, and never understood the hate they seem to get, but you know what they say, its a fine line between love and hate, and only badge snobbery stops anyone loving ford's

The issue at the time was similar to whats going on now with dealer markups in the US. The dealers would mark them up from 150k to 250k, and they werent getting a lot of them. then ford cut production due to low sales, and ended production. Back when it first came out, one of the dad's of someone i went to school with was able to get one at msrp by trading his spot in line at the ferrari dealer. It was blue with the white stripes. Truly an amazing vehicle, unfortunately screwed potential buyers over with the dealer markups. He used to drive back and forth from california and said he got it up to 200 a few times, from your video it really did look stable. The geometry of the suspension must be perfect, zero bump steer.

Actually production wasn't cut it was stopped due to a change in the roll over criteria for sedans (yes agree convertibles... but its government) so mine is one of the very last made after the US model year end of 31 Aug. They built all they could get done for the US and then finished the foreign orders (Canada, Oz, UK, Europe) and shuttered the line in Wixom. Sad day. Something around 4000 made, 271 came to Canada, not sure about other countries. I love mine and it gets to on the road every year.

Worth even more now... getting on for over half a million Euros, and the best examples even higher. Arguably one of the best retro tribute cars ever conceived. Far nicer than the latest Ford GT, and importantly it has a V8 😉

Phew, this car was my childhood dream car and obviously it can still hook me, as I thought the video was maybe 5-7 minutes long! When someone pointed out in the comments something with a timestamp of 19:something I was dumbfounded, this car has the ability to bend time and space even through screen! Love it.

I once saw 14 of these in various liveries/colorways parked outside a restaurant in Indianapolis. There wasn't anyone in the lot to talk shop with so I kept walking. I didn't want the awkwardness of someone running out thinking I was attempting to steal their baby. Big regret. I've always assumed they had just attended a GT only meet at the track. IIRC, it was near/during race weekend. They're truly stunning in person...

JUST WOWWWWW! What a car - and Autobahn surely is the best kind of road available to normal civilians to unleash this beast!
