LESSON SUMMARY
What are the essential differences between playing solo jazz piano versus playing in a piano trio? Even though a tune's melody and harmony are the same in both contexts, what you play as a pianist is significantly modified for a trio setting. In today's Quick Tip, Yannick Lambrecht demonstrates a simple and tasty approach to "Autumn Leaves" on piano for a jazz trio setting. You'll learn:
-Cycle of 5ths Chord Progression
-Quartal & Rootless Chords
-4-Note Voicings for Two Hands
-6-Note Voicings for Two Hands

Yannick is absolutely brilliant and the same goes for Jonny ... I'm a Classical pianist and love Jazz however, I always seem to find voicing a key element in Jazz that one needs to make sure to sound too muddy :) This explains in such a magnificent way that I could easily adopt and play with more confidence with such a style that is light and absolutely beautiful. I adore cocktail / Jazz Bar music and this is my mission :)

Hi Johnny, I love your videos and I've learned a lot from your tutorials. Just want to ask if Emaj7 to G7 is fit when played together?
@PianoWithJonny
@PianoWithJonny 2 жыл бұрын
That is the chord relationship for the first 2 chords of Giant Steps. Major 7 to dominant 7 up a minor third. It's non-diatonic but definitely works for jazz as a secondary dominant!

In the third bar (level 1) the F in the bass should have a natural sign (under the Db7 chord)

Exactly what I need around now. Hey Yannick you're great! Question: the double bass in a jazz group is usually so quiet as to be inaudible, so why do we entrust the bass note to them alone? Here eg the GM7 chord sounds more like a C9 chord in isolation - which can make jazz hard to follow harmonically.

Ps needs F natural in bar 4 etc! :)

Thank you Bethany! Although the double bass is typically quiet, it can certainly be "felt." I think that's part of the beauty of a trio ensemble.

I adore this video thanks for posting. I've watched it at least 10 times trying to learn from it and it's been a real pleasure. Here are some things I think could make it even easier to learn from. 1. Teach only the chords you're going to play. You cover a few chords at the beginning that aren't included. So they're redundant, for the purposes of this piece. E.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6fWf5udmqyYZpo that chord is taught then not used if I followed correctly 2. Go through the chord sequences lots of times and really slowly. There is one transitional chord that is only flashed on the screen for less than a second. 3. The "whole game" teaching model you partially follow: showing the whole thing then digging in to specific methods, but you do mix a bunch of flourishes not part of the piece that are confusing as a beginner. Having something like "this is what you'll play then [quite separately] here's what you can do if you practice later" is a format I personally learn a lot from. E.g. these flourishes kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6fWf5udmqyYZpo are lovely but am I supposed to be learning those or are you just noodling? I'm trying to copy everything you did so these are distracting 4. The transitional chord isn't a strict semitone slide, one note is a whole note -- you don't explain why and it's an example of what you say is one thing then what you do is different. Finally I'm using this technique called "Pomodoro technique" which says spend 20-25 minutes on something, take a 5 minute break, then try again. Maybe you could provide guidance as to how much time each section is worth practicing? Thanks so much again it's an absolutely beautiful piece that I listen to and would love to play really well. I think this video has gone a long way to help that.

Also the transitions between chords and melody have a lot of linked notes and that really helped me weave it all together. E.g. after playing one phrase of the melody, my fingers are already on some of the notes for the chord, which makes it even easier to learn.

Yes I like your style but I’ve been singing for a good long time using piano players to play to play for me I’m now playing piano If I’m singing Autumn leaves,all i need to back me is the chords i am singing the melody All I want is to accompany myself. Can you help me with that?
@PianoWithJonny
@PianoWithJonny Жыл бұрын
Yes! You can just leave out the melody and play the chords provided here. These are rootless voicings so they work best in a band setting. If you want to accompany in a solo piano style we have courses on that too.

How does the Singer sing to this song with the piano playing the melody?
@PianoWithJonny
@PianoWithJonny Жыл бұрын
If a singer was singing, the piano part would focus on the chords themselves. Some melody doubling is ok, but typically the focus would be more on responding with chords and countermelodies in the gaps of the vocal melody 👍
