A minor for alto saxophone, also you can play C major over it an it will sound right.

Stupid question: but how does one "learn how to play" from this. Does anyone have a link or advice on how to use a Backing Track to play Autumn Leaves?​ Am I supposed to be finding the melody from the written chords? thanks!

Paul Banas It might be worth trying a Real Book if you want to get in to this sort of thing. It’s in E minor in there but it’s not too tricky to chuck everything up a tone and a half.

Stay away from the Real Book if you want to play real music, jazz is music, not a set of changes written down on a book. So I suggest that you find a version of autumn leaves that you like and transcribe the melody, after you understand the relation between harmony and melody, add your own stuff and make it sound however you like. The more versions you listen to, the more you'll understand how it works. It's normally played on G minor so the real book is an awful resource that will only confuse you and stop you from making actual progress.

Two ways to spell the same chord...

almost ! the crossed out circle is a shorthand way of writing 'half-diminished 7th,' which is another way of saying m7b5 . a fully diminished 7th chord, symbolized by just a circle with no line thru it, would have a Gb instead of a G natural like the 'half-diminished' chord. that would be incorrect, but it's not what's written or played here.
