Great line of questioning and always wonderful to hear Fred talking! Glad to hear from Fred about giving a bit of water to Mormodes during dormancy because I tried this year as they were very dehydrated and indeed noticed it helps! That he confirms this is reassuring.

These chats are my favorite! I'm looking at getting my catasetums ready for my dry winter house and found the information today to be helpful. I do occasionally spray a light mist over the plants, and also use a room humidifier. Nothing for the roots. I sure hope to see them survive and thrive next year and not throw up the white flag like they did last year.

I bet increasing the humidity in the root zone will help!

Thank you again for all you do.😊👍 On a different matter, I was looking back on some of your videos and I have a question. (Nobody really talks about it in depth, just what they do) Is it better to wet the roots before repotting or dividing an orchid?? What is more beneficial to the plant and its health?? Thank you 😊 👍

Yes, wet roots are more pliable and less apt to breaking!

Catasetinae Rocks. Great questions and I always enjoy listening to Fred's advice. Got a lot of Mormodes during this last haul, so going to have to watch them to make sure there is no excessive shriveling.

Do I have to take my catesidum out of it's pot in the fall or can I just leave it stay in the pot over winter? Thank you

Thanks for this very interesting chat. My question is: I’ve just received a bunch of new catasetinae from a nursery that are already dormant, the roots are as dry as the moss, but the other cats in my grow room are still thriving.. what to do?cheers from Rome 🤗
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids Жыл бұрын
Just put them next to your others and wait for them to wake up! No water for the dormant plants.

Thoughts on increasing humidity if growing with PET method? Add water through the side holes? Create a second container that fits snugly around the plant container?

Exactly what happens if you don't put them into dormancy and water/feed them year round? Do they rot? Stop growing? Refuse to bloom?
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids 11 ай бұрын
They’ll eventually go to sleep, but will likely do it at a really awkward time. This means they can wake up at an awkward time (like fall) and throw off the growth cycle.

If a person was interested in attempting to grow a catasetum is there one that is best for beginners? Is it better to wait until spring and they are coming into growth to purchase or is headed towards dormancy better? A couple of times keeping the humidity level 'up' was mentioned. Is that 40%, or 60% is there a range to aim for? I'm looking at the pileatum cross on the SVO website.

@SVKLOrchids Жыл бұрын
I’d say any of the complex hybrids are good for beginners as are the intergenerics. I’d say keeping the humidity above 50% is good, with closer to 70% being optimal for dormancy. Getting them in late spring when they’re about to be watered would be my advice to cut your teeth!
@BakedandCooked
@BakedandCooked Жыл бұрын
@@SVKLOrchids I'll see what SVO has this spring. I like to keep my humidity at 65-70% so that should be fine. I am a bit of a species snob, but to start out with an entirely new genera maybe some 'hybrid vigour' wouldn't hurt.
@SVKLOrchids

@@BakedandCooked For sure! Although pileatum is fairly easy and SVO had one on its most recent list.

Thanks for this great video. Question- my young catesetum from SVO I noticed yesterday has a new growth on it, I’m in CA like Fred Clark and he said about keep watering like normal through middle of October but I’m worried about the roots of that new growth, do I go ahead and stop watering now or keep watering but try to avoid the new roots?
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids Жыл бұрын
@@m3msilva just keep watering as normal and cut water off as normal! The new growths are just bonus and don’t need to be focused on. A bunch of my new SVO plants are going the same!
