There is a crisis of imported fashion attacking the US fashion industry. It started over 35 years ago with the cheap imports but has exploded more recently. Our fashion manufacturing in the US has suffered from obsolete equipment and a dwindling experienced labor force. We are not able to compete with offshore manufacturing. We do need to protect our US fashion-manufacturing labor force. But is this FABRIC Act as it is written the right legislation? From what I’ve read it doesn’t address strengthening the industry. It allows a 30% reduction in corporate tax for companies relocating to the US, but a reduction is misleading. At any time corporate tax can be raised negating a meager 30% reduction. There should be 0% tax for companies relocating to the US for a period of 5 years. There should also be low interest rates for investment of machinery. Advanced machinery is so prevalent in overseas manufacturing. High cost of American labor with high cost of machinery have made companies leave the US for offshore manufacturing. Which brings another point. Remember NAFTA. How many thought that was so great. Factories closed and left laborers in the dust. There will be no US fashion manufacturers left here if we don’t address offshore finished goods. The bill doesn’t address raw materials needed for US manufacturing of finished goods. Yes, tariffs can be good. But the wrong kind of tariffs are really bad. During the Great Depression high tariffs were imposed on raw materials as well as finished goods. As a result almost all manufacturing ceased because US manufacturers couldn’t get the raw materials from Canada and other countries cheap enough to make goods at a reasonable price. (Also, other countries responded with tariffs making US goods too high for their consumers to afford.) We need a balance of exports and imports. Put forth a bill that will strengthen our fashion economy.

Thanks - a very interesting video. I’m in Aus and the Dior “scandal” is pretty much hush hush here and not even mentioned. No designer company would care about my boycotting them.😅 I do believe that Dior was just the one who was caught, LVMH has sooo many brands, it’s naive to think they are all heavily regulated and doing the right by employees and it was only Dior who was doing the wrong thing.
@DeeHigginbotham-mv3gc

Thank you. You are the first person to remind people that Dior is part of LVMH. It is not Dior that needed to react to, but to LVMH. We live with the illusion that luxury is made by craftsman and not by a sweat shop. Which begs the question, why buy luxury at all when they are no better than Temu? You make excellent points. I agreed with you 100%. The wallet decides what we buy. Do I pay $6.00 for the cage free eggs or $3.00 for the regular eggs? I am a pre-loved fan. All of my luxury be bags are pre-loved 😁. The most important thing any of us can do to affect change is to vote. Vote like your future depends on it, because it does.❤❤

I think the press reports mention LVMH and Armani in particular and so did some creators. My problem is that I'm not into luxury and already avoid some other brands so I can't have any more effect on their finances.

I'm not surprised that these companies do the bare minimum for worker's rights and working conditions. This is what happens when we allow for too much deregulation.

The other part of the scandal is that at the same time these inhumane working conditions are in place, products sold for thousands of $$ have been revealed to cost only $50 to produce. The premium attached to these names has become a joke.

I think the problem is not how workers were treated, although that is the problem- the outrage comes with the prices charged to consumers and the product image being destroyed. We were outrageously lied to. Either we accept that some jobs are really really bad or we look the other way because while luxury items are not necessities many necessary things are produced the same way. Until consumers demand better quality everywhere and in everything nothing will change.

I've thought this was going on in high end luxury for a while, given the lowering quality in recent years. Dior/LVMH just got caught (finally) and I have a feeling before it's over with, we will hear more companies being caught. It reminds me so much of what happened in Saipan/Mariana Islands in the late 1990s/early 2000s and the companies involved in horrible labor conditions just to get a "made in USA" label.

A,very interesting Video, thanks Autumn. If I would be buying from Dior I would not purchase from them any more. I know, it wouldnt hurt them one bit and wouldnt change anything for THEM but I would want to do do it for MYSELF because it would not feel okay for me buying a 3000 plus bag, knowing the ones producing them earn so little money. I couldnt enjoy the bag. But I'm only speaking for myself for no one else. Everyone to their own choice. Voting is and has always been a Privileg to me and I never miss out on the oppurtunity, good, you raised the topic.

Buy artisanal products . That’s a great way to support small business . In my opinion. Crochet is another craft that is so labor intensive that you have to save to buy it . That’s why I give it as gifts and not sell . People want everything for cheap . We must get out of that mentality . Unfortunately I don’t even think we can get out of it 100 % because a lot yarn is even made by slave labor.

This was an informative and enjoyable video. As an Australian I cannot understand the American way on voting. A friend has an intellectually disabled daughter. She had to go to a lot of trouble {doctors letters etc} to get her daughter out of voting because she is not really able to understand. such is our high standards of everyone having the right to vote. I try really hard to buy ethically. Here from H&M we can buy clothes made from recycled materials, but then I hear the process uses a lot of water. So ups and downs pros and cons. I try in the supermarket too and buy local clothing in natural materials. But its hard and always more expensive! I follow Dayle and she is a highly intelligent content creator. xxx

Thank you, so much for putting out this very informative video. I do love handbags, and I do think that it’s good to know the history of these companies who make these beautiful luxury handbags, not to mention the treatment of the workers who perhaps lives in these sweatshops , who perhaps sacrifice’s her health, to make these beautiful handbags for me to buy. I’m a firm believer in getting out and voting no excuses just get out and vote.

Good vid - my thoughts - if a fashion company / ANY has good practice as you said you'll be able to easily find out about it - if there is any difficulty finding this then you can bet the company is hiding stuff - I think only Dacob said about the Dior scandal 'we all kind of knew if about it - now we really know' Was the Dior scandal a surprise? I disagree that leather is a byproduct - the value of that skin will be carefully calculated in the value of an animal - as will the bones / the organs etc the glue industry / the pet food industry. A company can decide if that leather is from animals raised humanely or not. I thInk collectively the best we can do is CONSUME LESS.
