Just completed this hike Aug,26,2023 with my son and 10yo grandson. It was the most strenuous hike I have ever done and also the most beautiful and rewarding. I needed to take my time and make sure I caught my breath frequently. I will admit to being intimidated by the portion along the spine, I moved slowly and carefully (like a grandpa😂). I used trekking poles and HIGHLY recommend them for this hike. Great video!

@@captainchaos7579 I was 63 when I did it. At the time I was regularly walking 1.5 miles a day on the treadmill. It took us 5 hours total up and back and I was sore for 4 days afterwards. So I’m not sure how “old” and “out of shape “ you are (many would consider walking only 1.5 miles a day out of shape), so it is hard to say. Also, if you are seriously overweight it would be a problem. I was slightly overweight when I did it (6’1”, 220lb). The hike gains 2000’ in 2 miles so it is a constant 20% grade. Does that help?? Start early in the day (8:00am), bring lots of water, take your time…..ps, it’s cold and windy at the top.

Just hiked this with my son in July. We were in the park for 5 minutes hitting the East entrance and yup...we hit it first. EPIC! very windy at the top...40mph winds at the top and wow! Quite a difference in temp bottom to top! But so worth it!

Yes, a tough hike yet a lot of bang for the buck, as far as views go. August brings the best hiking conditions, generally you don't have to do the snow then. Hiked it several times. The last go was memorable. A ranger led the hike, and toursits were making good time with the ranger. A bunch of us employees were left in their dust!!! Although then we had it to ourselves at the top and then coming back down.

As always, beautiful filming. Now we’re you excited or scared at first seeing the bears. Snow? June? Oh woah. I do not do snow. Don’t you need special gear for that? Special shoes? But the views were amazing. But I’m sure it was more fabulous in person. It’s so hard to show what it’s like on the top of a mountain like that. This was the hardest hike I have done, and yes it was much tougher coming down than I expected. Yes the bears were a real concern for us especially after just seeing them nearby. Parts of the year they close this trail because of the bear traffic too. These bears were so big too, it wasn't like the black bears in the smokies that we had experienced before!

Having a sturdy pair of boots on your feet takes the scare out of hiking mountains and long walks on trails. They ground you, balance you, support your arches, and allows you to scamper up ledges. Sneakers will disappoint you and maybe give you a bloody nose as they slip on a ledge. It's so worth it to put down some serious cash for the right fitting boot. I pay about $80 on sale, $120 for the best.

I would take grampon or shoe spikes. They always help with snow and ice. Can't wait for my trip in July. Definitely doing this hike it's look like pictures I've seen of the Iger in Switzerland my top bucket list item.

Microspikes are great for that type of snow. Crampons have huge spikes used for ice climbers. No way I'm doing that. Microspikes are pulled on your boot. They fit snug on a rubber ring. We carry them in our backpack for easy on and off.

Barronette. My Pick. Electric is basically 11,000 few feet short. epic views especially Barronette. 10,354 feet. Avalache is about the same as Electric. Bunsen has surprising views. Same TH as Electric just on other side of the road. Washburn is best for center of park. If you go up to the tower from north side go out along the ridge for at least 700 yards. Road up from other side is okay also. Barronette is one helluva a view. No lake but best hike we ever went on. And I have worked at Yellowstone Rocky Yosemite Teton. AZ Strip BLM. Yellowstone is magical for wilderness peaks. It is just different. User freindly. Nobody goes down to Beckler lol but it is out there too. For Barronette, Park at Icicle Canyon pull off, cross road, go up the hill, follow ridge up, one section through Bear Maul woods. Up scramble, then epic view looking up to top at the tiny snow pack left in July. At top the Valleys surrounding it are what make it amazing, and the route up the ridge. It goes forever. Electric is a slog from TH. Long day, like five false summits, then giant rock blob to scramble up at top. The trail goes through the woods but I took the ridge. At its end you literally walk out onto the 2 foot wide trail junction wher it goes up Electric. Do all four. The views around electric looking at Bunsen and surrouding mountains Swan Lake soem other lake are really nice. SOme go up from side or from out of park north side. Thunderer. The other side of the Thunderer is the woods. For real woods out there. The loop from Petrified tree back around to Roosevelt Corral is sweet. Lost Lake. And Blacktail Deer to Yellowstone river then to Gardiner. 13 miles but really nice walk along the river, sweet lake, good view of electric. I also like crossing the creek above Undine Falls and going down to the bottom. Yellowstone is king of walking off a trail and never seeing anyone. But you can get eaten or killed. Most definitely. Grizzlies are there and up in the the tooth too. The Beartooth is the real deal, we did it from fire tower and pass definitely saw some Griz and they sure as hell were not afraid of us. Gave us the death stare. Up on hind legs standing few hundred yards away. I take a real gun in Yellowstone you can do what you want. I have had 4 grizzlies walk out of the brush less than 50 feet from me, never knew they were close until they appeared casually walking. One 15 feet from friend, on the pull off going up to Washburn from Tower where we used phone back in 2010. Grizzlies are what make Yellowstone Yellowstone. Just saying. Big difference from no Griz places. Big. My take on Griz is you probably are fine if they know you are there but probably dead or FUBAR is you surprise one. Or get the one mean SOB. Realistically gun spray or whatever you are probably done if the thing is near you and decides to maul the sht out of you. They can run about 40mph. Their heart beats like 25 a minute. So a griz is gonna go 6 minutes or more chewing on you even if shot if pissed off and motivated to maul you. Lol. It is against the law to discharge a firearm in Yellowstone. And of course if you kill a bear you are gonna be crucified anyway. Kangeroo court federal magistrate. Rigged deal. I just state this so you can decide what you want to do. Do not care. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE between young males and females down low and an 800 pound male up top. That is twice as big as those big females. I have seen a 900 pound or more one a few times. About sht. Out side of Alaska that is big the WY record BLACK BEAR is stuffed in Sinks Canyon Ranger Station in Lander it is 750 pounds. Yep. But hey you can listen to the tree hugger if you want or go with nothing. 99.999 percent of the time you will be fine. I am still alive. We went as three all carrying bear spray and all armed big bore pistols. Just like if we were at home in town. I have walked much of the park alone though. Maybe even bear management areas. Possibly. Perhaps. Alledgedly. Carried gun in multiple combat tours as infantryman not a supply guy, as cop, as USAF security Forces, including Presidential orders. Carry all the time as civilian. It is America. Southeast Southwest and West aka Great Basin. If not in griz country then I don't care but if with kids in wilderness carry. Had dozens of black bears walk by me. But not the 350 pound TN ones, western ones. CA WY MT WA UT ID CO.

Thank you so much for this video. I noticed one of you used hiking poles. Did she find them helpful? We have never used hiking poles before on any of our hikes. However, this hike had what looks like lots of little rocks that might be slippery. Maybe the poles would be useful.

We love having the poles, it just helps so much trying to steady your steps on some these harder hikes! We saw plenty of others with them too. So on more serious elevation gain hikes, we always have them on hand and ours are collapsable, so we can put them away when we don't need them :). Thank You for checking out our channel!

Hello, just a question about the bears. How did you guys react to the bears? Did you guys just walk away without them noticing? Just asking because my family and I are looking forward to hiking this trail. It looks like fun!

We did not run into any bears on the hike, but I did have my bear spray out and ready during the portion going thru the forest areas!! The bears we saw were on the road up to the trailhead about a mile away. We traveled as a three person group and waited up for two hikers that we followed up the trail so there was five of us and that is a solid strategy!!

Got to disagree with you about the view. The view from eagle peak at the Southeastern corner of the park looking into the Thorofare, the most dense mountains of the Teton and Washakie wildernesses as well as Yellowstone Lake.
