Avalanche Studios in the Wasteland

With only a week to go until the release of Mad Max, we wanted to share one of our favorite experiences from this journey.
Most game developers never get to touch anything they create. Their work is forever locked behind glass screens. So when the centerpiece of the upcoming Mad Max game - a unique car called the Magnum Opus - would be re-created in real life, it was an overwhelming experience for the team at Avalanche Studios.
In this short documentary, we get to follow Lead Artist Daniel Persson, the original designer of the Magnum Opus, and Odd Ahlgren, Director of Narrative Content, as they witness their work come to life. Odd even travels to Wasteland Weekend, the celebration of all things post-apocalyptic, to realize a life-long dream.

I couldn't find an Avalanche or Mad Max forum to talk to you guys in Avalanche but i needed to say this after playing your game twice. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart thank you. In the sea of mediocrity that we have in the gaming landscape today Mad Max video game was not an innovative game that broke the rules in the view that it used plain and well proven formulas but what it did was do it WELL! From the moment i started the game i was so immersed that i had to stop myself to eat and do actual real life things. I haven't felt that since i was a young boy during the golden days of gaming during the 90's where everything was new and innovative, and Mad Max did that for me, i couldn't stop playing. I do have to say something about the trailers and the PR though, it ruined your chances of a bigger profit. I myself and many others, i will wager, didn't buy this game on face value because the PR portrayed Max as the "american macho man" which we are sick and tired of lately coming from everything from movies and games from the USA, so i bought it in a steam sales at a lower price. Had i known that you didn't portray him in the game wrongly, being the totally screwed up Max we know (and love) who only cares for the car, everyone he loves or cares dying around him and him chugging along as the dead man walking was extremely amazing to see in the game. And the connection to the movie was so well made. You did him honor and you were, from the game design to the story writing, spot on. It was an honor and a pleasure to play this game and wish i could say this to your faces personally and thank you for your work. Seriously, who's the idiot at Warner Bros who thought it's a good idea to go against Hideo Kojima with almost a new IP? Mad Max will go down as one of the most underrated games in history. It was let down by the marketing and the release date. I've burnt over 200 hours in the Wateland. An amazing game with never-ending things to do and explore. I can't wait for a sequel (if this ever gonna happen). Well done Avalanche Studios!!

I'm still playing and re-playing the game today. The attention to detail of everything within the world is so amazing. I'm not sure how a world with bathtubs full of gore and pillars of rotting bodies can be beautiful, but it is. Thanks for all the hard work that went into it. I would love if it would be moddable as so much cool stuff could be done. It's a bit sad when you've got the most baller car and all the enemy convoys are cleared out.

Mad Max video game was frikin awesome. The cars, the details, the sounds, the colors, the locations, the frikin story missions, everything about it was just ridiculously well polished and well done. Even the graphics hold up still today very well.

I love postapocalyptic genre in general since my first Fallout in late 90´,exploring the wasteland for stuff and relics and good action - All is in MM so yea I agree.Im playing it for 4 days now and I have like 30% finished :-D (I want to do 100% so I think I have lot to do till F4). And of course Fallout is partially based on MM so.... 9/10 for me this game

Bane For sure. I'm also personally attempting to 100% everything. I have the entire southern region of the game colored Green on the map. For me it's an 8.5/10. I am really loving the ground combat too, it got lots of criticism but it's awesome to me. I love punching warboys in slow motion.

I just got the game as a Christmas gift and have been enjoying myself immensely. As an Australian I get a little hung up on all of the weird accents and mispronunciations of things. Dinky Dee instead of Dinky Die etc. But after a few days I have gotten used to things and have really started to enjoy the process of figuring out how best to take out a compound. Get skillful enough to take on a large convoy quickly etc etc. I have LOVED my time with this game. I hope Avalanche Studios are very proud of their creation. I really hope they are working on more DLC. Well done.

Best game I've played this summer, including MGS-V. Fantastic environment, truly beautiful render engine (and nicely modeled assets to boot!), a solid story, upgrading, raiding, looting and plundering... this game has got all the goods! And that screenshot capture mode brings me back into the wasteland to tear shit up every day. Couple of bugs like F12 on PC skips cutscenes if double pressed, and the engine sounds crap out when you leave a stronghold fairly often, but man, Mad Max is a masterpiece in my book. Love love love it!

This game was great to play, but after playing it, and doing everything, there wasnt anything else to do. so, having co-op capabilities and multiplayer in the ways of, say team death matches, capture and control modes, resource runs where 1 team has to deliver resources to point B from point A while the other team has to stop you before you get there. I could go on, there is so much potential for this game!

I've never been a fan of Avalanche nor their Just cause games. That was until i bought Mad Max. It is an absolute blast and a true love letter to all post-apocalypse and Mad Max/Fallout lovers. It feels like experience tailored to me and i enjoyed the heck out of it. Every minute,every hour i spend in the Wasteland,collecting loot,looking for history relics and hunting down cars. Trying to stay alive and cross the Plains of silence. It is absolute soul-gasm! Thank you, Avalanche!

I love the car besides the wheels. I’m in the process myself of making a magnum opus recreation. I’m creating the jack and plan on taking it to wasteland weekend. So far I have a 2000 explorer chassis, soon to have a 66 mustang and I have a drivetrain.

I still keep going back to this game. So much fun! I've played through it so many times I lost count. It's a damn shame it had to release at the same time as Metal Gear. I bet it would've sold better without any competition. I wish they would make another one.

If any developer at Avalanche reads this: Please give us console and PC players a patch which makes dead bodies/corpses and car wrecks stay on the ground until the player reaches a great distance to them. Instantly fading away bodies and cars massively break the immersion! This kind of game design is absolutely not bearable in the year 2015. Most games these days offer permanently visible bodies and blood stains, which increase the realism and immersion considerably. This otherwise great game suffers badly from this issue, please Avalanche, adress this problem. There is nothing that gamers hate more than disappearing corpses. It feels so... 1998. We have next gen consoles and PC's which could run NASA simulation software smoothly, so why do bodies still have to fade away into thin air after 20 seconds? Another huge atmosphere killer is the eyesore that covers the top left screen corner - the mission objective text reminder. Does it have to be visible all the time and ruin the vista? And what's with the floating destination marker that is always visible in the distance? Isn't the minimap enough to find my path, do I need to be reminded by a floating circle within the game environment all the time? No, I don't. Ubisoft does this, yes. But they think gamers are stupid. But we aren't. We love playing most games with HUD entirely disabled, as we want to discover the game world by ourselves. So please give us the option to turn off unnecessary things and instead keep the dead bodies in. Thank you very much for reading this and I honestly hope in the name of all gamers that you guys listen to your customers and fans and release a patch soon.

Today I was playing Mad Max and there was a doubt that I never knew because there are no motorcycles in the game, since in Mad Max movies there are... I just wish avalanche studios if they did a sequence and please put the motorcycles on or they could do a dlc for mad max with motorcycles from the movie that could alter some enemies with vehicles to appear with them would be really cool.

Wholly under-rated game. Getting mostly just average - good scores, it deserved so much better. Sure it had some repetitive elements to it, but nobody minds a bit of repetition as long as what you are repeating is still fun, and it most certainly was fun in this game. Wanting a sequel. And a sequel where we have the interceptor through the whole game and not just the end.
