From "A Big Band Musical Tour of America," the 2024 Commencement-Eve Pops Concert at the State University of New York at Fredonia. The Fredonia Jazz Vocal Jazz Ensemble, James Harrington, Director; with the Fredonia Jazz Orchestra, Dr. Nick Weiser, Director. Arranged by Darmon Maeder.
AVALON was written by Al Jolson, Buddy DeSylva, and Vincent Rose. It was first recorded by Jolson and Rose in 1920. However, the most well-known version of Avalon was recorded by the vocal group The Four Freshmen in 1958. The lyrics reference Avalon, California. It’s often interpreted as a metaphor for a utopian or idealized place where one can escape to find happiness and peace.
