avaneesh is just one example of a much larger issue in the brown community. whether we admit it or not, we tend to prefer european features over our own, to the point where we go out of our way to emulate white features. this is because of the fact that we were colonised by the british, and the idea that they were the beauty standard lingered long after they left. i think the most common example of this is the idea of fair skin. people with fair skin are systemically regarded as more attractive. it's such a large issue that there are literally products that promise to lighten your skin. i bring this up because it's likely the reason avaneesh has the mindset he does. he has difficulty seeing his own people as beautiful because that's the atmosphere that has been nurtured on a larger scale. i'm not trying to baby him, he's an adult who's responsible for his own actions. i'm just using him as a prime example. i've seen people, guys in my class, act like him. this is a far deeper issue. a reminder that being brown is NOT a bad thing. our culture is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated. internalised racism is extremely normalised in our community, and sometimes it becomes externalised, giving rise to well, assholes like this guy. if we want shit like this to change, it changes with *us*. edit: a lot of replies have pointed out that this isn't just an issue with the brown community, but has shown up in the east asian and black ones too. which i mean.. i could write an essay about, but in short, colonialism *really* sucks. there is NOTHING wrong with being non-white. all cultures are worth celebrating
