Bryan, I really appreciate you doing such a thorough and complete analysis of a Sleepytime Gorilla Museum song! I think they are a wildly unique and challenging band to grasp, but deeply rewarding once you develop the taste and get close to their music. I was also put off by their sound on first listen, but that small bite of "intriguing confusion," as you put it, brought me back to them 6 months later or so. It takes time to process this incomprehensible band, as their layers are complex and deep. But I think they are aiming precisely to be an enticing confusion literally every engrained step of the way through their music, and from a place of deep honesty and mischief. Their first two albums are great, check them out. Also SGM's early reincarnation of sorts, Idiot Flesh, was legendary. If you want to see what they were like in their 20s, go check out their album Fancy and any VHS live footage you can find online. Absolutely astounding, and in the 90s!!

I think the two worlds, water and fire, are like peace and strife, love and hate, ignorance and realization, order and chaos. I think the being in two worlds indicates a concept of harmony here, where life is the understanding and balancing of these forces. Anyway, I always love STGM's imagery, and this us no exception.

This song is similar stylistically to a lot of their last album (In Glorious Times), so if you want more music like this I highly recommend it.

Good video. I've dug a couple of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum songs and this song was pretty good.

Salamanders are amphibians, animals of two worlds. I interpreted the song as a salamander family trying to survive in an increasingly hostile world of acid rain, & other man-made environmental hazards. Even the food that sustains them, serving as poison which harms them as well. This fits into recurring theme in SGM's music: humanity's destruction of the natural world. How we fail to live in harmony with nature, striving instead to destroy the world around us instead of attempting any sort of deeper understanding of it; & how & where we fit in with the natural order. Basically I saw it as mostly literal but I appreciate seeing an alternative perspective as well!

Was a big fan of these guys back in the day. Had no idea they were releasing new music, but I'm definitely hyped! I think you said it best in that this was expectedly unexpected. I definitely enjoyed it, but like all their music it's going to take a few listens to get a grip on. Definitely excited for the full album release.

SGM will also be putting out a short film that's based on the album which is aaaabsolutely a concept album. It might not be straightforward, but I'm guessing the lyrics will be clearer with the visual component.

Great review, friend! I love the song. I don't count or think theory when I listen, I just let my body inhale it to recognize it more and more for each listen.
