So use the apollo for clear if at all possible. Gotcha! Man you are on a roll. Good stuff!!!

The Apollo is an excellent choice to use if at all possible, and it has many available air caps and needle and tip combinations to choose from. But, in the hands of a refinisher that can paint anything - either choice will produce excellent results. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I can't wait to see you spray some 4:1 clear with either gun soon and on the avanti turbine. :)@@JakeLesada

Great video. I am happy to see this. I did just purchase the Apollo 5. I also get a free gun with the promotion they have going on. Thank you for the video.

My friend in the next town has the same machine you have the Apollo 5 - he loves it. He's using it to restore a vintage Mini Cooper. The paint he's using is Spies Hecker. Have fun spraying.

How did you attach the gauge to the gun? Been looking for something like this but there doesn't seem to be anything available?
@JakeLesada3 ай бұрын
I attached the air gauge thru an Apollo coupler with my own custom mod.

Hey jake can you give us some timings for #2 zahn cups recommended flow times plus or minus 2-3 seconds?? Im tired of guessing and just going by ratios. I think for some of us beginner's I say start with the ratio per TDS sheet then time it and then make adjustments with reducer or thinner depending on what your spraying for most consistent spray patterns Primer coat time Sealer coat time Base coat time Clear coat time

If you can recognize how paint drips from the paint stick, you'll understand how that paint material will easily flow through or get choked up - as it's trying atomize out the spray gun. For beginners or advanced refinishers, I always recommend following the TDS sheet instructions for mixing paint. When checking my paint flow in the mix cup, I prefer to do the drip test - and from my experience it's easiest to see how it's going to spray by doing a wall test spray. I really don't rely on #2 Zahn cup times for my mixes. I prefer to mix according to TDS instructions, and mostly without extra thinning or reducing the paint material. Then, I'll adjust my choices with choosing an air cap with needle and tip combination. A common #2 Zahn cup time for water is about 17 secs. Most clear coats can spray similar to how water flows from the #2 Zahn cup time. Back in the 80's I was taught to see the flow time through the Zahn cup, and also with the drip test. The drip test was just a confirmation as to how the painter liked the mix - thin or thick. But, I think the most important is the manufacturer recommend dry mils paint thickness. The paint has to be the correct mils thickness after it's dried and cured. I know you probably wanted to see the #2 Zahn times. Thank you for watching and commenting.

The most I get out of my Apollo Precision 5 is 7.4 psi. Is this the new 6 stage Apollo you are working with?
@JakeLesada9 ай бұрын
This machine is the larger Apollo Maxi-Miser M3000 circa 2016. The new Apollo 6 Stage is similar in size to your Apollo Precision 5, but the 6 stage has a more fans stages internally with the turbine motor, and it will produce more output. More fans internally can equal more output.

@@JakeLesada If I point a leaf blower to the inlet will I get more PSI ? :)

That's a good question.

And the Apollo uses less air so it is more lvlp than the Avanti?
@JakeLesada9 ай бұрын
Remember, the Apollo turbine spray gun is an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) type turbine spray gun. The internal air passages are larger to allow for the larger volume of air CFM (cubic feet per/minute ) to flow through. It is not an LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) type air compressor spray gun. Both the Apollo and Avanti are HVLP turbine type spray guns. The Apollo spray gun is very efficient with how it uses less air to atomize paint material.
