RECENT REALIZATION: The Storm: In Aang's flashback, Aang is going to be sent away to the Eastern Air Temple to finish his Avatar training. Guru Pathik lives at the Eastern Air Temple and aims to help Aang "finish" his Avatar training by teaching him to control the Avatar State. Appa's Lost Days: Guru Pathik tells Appa that he's been expecting Aang and Appa for quite a very long time. He had a vision of helping Aang and was why he moved to the Eastern Air Temple. The Guru: Right when Aang meets Guru Pathik, Pathik says that he was a spiritual brother to the air nomads and a PERSONAL FRIEND of Monk Gyatso. So... meaning Guru Pathik is ancient and was old & wise before the genocide. WHAT IF... When Aang was being sent away to the Eastern Air Temple, he was being sent away to train with Guru Pathik, and Pathik was waiting for 100 years for Aang to show up. Maybe Guru Pathik was suppose to be the one to train Aang on how to control the Avatar State and wipe out Firelord Sozin and his army before Sozin's Comet to prevent the war from even happening. Just a theory

"Don't flatter yourself. You were never even a player." By far one of my favorite Azula lines of the show! With no effort at all, she literally stomped Long Feng's ass without even trying. Lol I can't say this enough, but Azula is such an amazing villain. I mean, she came up with a coup by using the Dai Li, played Long Feng like a fool all throughout it, was able to successfully turn Zuko to her side with just the right words, and she took the initiative and actually did something about Aang while Zuko and everyone else were standing around, waiting and watching him power up. She was basically "I have no time for games, BAM!" I love that! She knows people's weaknesses, when to use it against them, and she's so damn smart and always two steps ahead of everyone. And if she sees an opportunity to take advantage of something, she'll do it. She saw the chance to kill the Avatar and she took it. Went behind him and everything in order to blindside him as soon as he came out. I also find it ironic that the way Azula took down Ba Sing Se was basically how the Gaang took down the drill. From the inside! Infiltrated Ba Sing Se, organized a coup, and quietly took down the city. By the time everyone finds out what had happened, it will already be too late. Unlike those before her, she didn't take down Ba Sing Se through pure force, she took it down through cunning intellect. I'm glad you girls also seem to understand why Zuko chose to side with Azula. A lot of people at times don't understand. I usually like describing Zuko here as akin to describing a recovering drug addict relapsing. He was on the straight and narrow for a bit, but then along came a pretty strong incentive that causes him to relapse. In this case, it was Aang being right there in front of him and Azula appealing to Zuko's weaknesses. His honor and his father's love/approval were quite literally within reach in this moment. Being the master manipulator that Azula is, she knew this and she gave him that nudge, that incentive. She also did it in a way where it felt like Zuko had a choice as opposed to Iroh who was trying to push and lock him in a certain direction. And honestly, from my perspective, even though Zuko appeared to be happy with his life in Ba Sing Se, it always felt like he was just settling because that was going to be the best that was offered to him. Deep down though, what Azula was saying was probably what he still wanted. He just finally, with the right push, made the choice here to have his desires realized. So in a way, from her perspective, Azula was right when she said Zuko restored his own honor.

I've seen Zuko compared to addicts or people in emotionally abusive relationships, and it's a pretty apt comparison if you ask me. Zuko's been slowly healing and withdrawing from his "addiction" for honor, rage and his desire for approval from his father. However, when he's actually tempted with the thing he's addicted to, he ends up relapsing and giving into his baser desires. This isn't helped by the fact that the person offering and tempting him is, in many ways, his emotional abuser and knows exactly which buttons to press in order to get him to give in.

The way Katara holds Aang after he is struck down by Azula's lightning greatly resembles La Pieta, a famous sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus after he is brought down from the crucifix. All of the cinematography and symbolism going on here is incredible for Zuko's crossroads of destiny. They make it clear throughout the battle that his presence is what would have tipped the scales either in favor or against team Avatar. You can't help but imagine what would have happened if he chose differently. They could have stalled long enough for Iroh then Toph and Sokka to join the fight, and they could have taken on the Dai Li (how's that spelled?). One thing I always liked from this chapter is that when Iroh creates the opening for Katara and Aang to escape is that he is using negative and neutral chi. He is using defensive moves to make enough time and once they`re gone he just stops. I like to think he is very aware of all the possibilities. If he would've kept fighting, the best scenario he manages to take down enough soldiers to run away but with some injuries or worst case scenario he is overpowered and taken down. The only logical reason is for him to do nothing.

zuko joining azula is one of those things that you hate when watching it, but realize that unfortunately it makes a lot of sense, at least when he can have capturing Aang be a mutual enemy. While Zuko is a good person at heart, he is still a fire nation prince a country full of propaganda that it's hard to deal with when you're going from high to low. He never turns against the Fire Nation in all of season 2 despite his progress, even when the Fire Nation has turned against him which I think people forget when they expected him to join Aang and the Gaang here. A few episodes ago he was willing to hunt down Appa to get to Aang so he could restore his honor, Iroh stops him when he confronts him, but it shows that that obsession is still a poison in his veins, like you both said it's an addiction, and once Azula dangled the little bit of hope Iroh talked about in the Storm, Zuko relapsed. While it was annoying at the time and with the unholy break between season 2 and 3 that Nick had for some reason, it is actually really brilliant writing for this show
@99thJediWarrior4 жыл бұрын
A lot of people were disappointed in Zuko with this episode. Which is understandable. But if you really think about it, it was partly because of a Azula that he turned back to his old self. If you look at it, he never really faced what was eating at him on the inside. In a way, it was like he forgot everything happened to him. Then Azula comes out of nowhere to disrupt his life. But then when she hits him with that "You're free to choose" line, that was what got him. All this time, Zuko never felt like he had the power to choose for himself. His whole Avatar-chasing journey made him think it was the only way to get what he wanted. But Azula saying that made all the difference for him. He chose what was familiar to him. Old habits need to die hard for people like Zuko.

This is the first time Aang uses the Avatar State without bending any element. The Dai Li agent with the scar on the right side of his face, which Azula stops to face during her speech to mention how she will fix any disloyalty, is the same agent that is questioned by Iroh, Sokka, Toph and Aang. This possibly suggests that since Azula is a "people person", she knew that particular Dai Li Agent would be a problem.

Now that I look back at this episode,why is aang saying sorry. The guru said that he can go in and out at will and be fully conscious in the avatar state. He can still love her after, it’s not like the charka will relock itself if he goes against it or something.

A lot of people forget / don't realize, but Katara defeated Azula! How's that for a waterbending prodigy!
@tomking91914 жыл бұрын
I think Azula just underestimated Katara, she was not using much against Katara if we take a look at the details of their clash..
@jimmoryaty69034 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Manx people forget, the problem is just Azula’s jobbing.

Tom King well (spoiler) katara still destroyed azula at the finale even if azula was crazy she was sane enough to use lightning bending AND had the comet power up...katara is just badass and one of the best
@jos-josradvanji62034 жыл бұрын
@@KanChiateyallsfavsup it doesn't matter what kind of power you have if you're so crazy you don't really throw anything properly anymore. if azula was sane,katara wouldn't have beaten her. the way katara beat her was through a rouse which azula wouldn't fall for in her sane state.
@Moxy1254 жыл бұрын
@@KanChiateyallsfavsup Azula fell for a trick. She never falls for tricks when she's sane. Even then, she was fighting on home turf, there's no way she would've just disregarded the water underneath if she was sane.

friendly reminder that if you die in the avatar state the avatar cycle stops and the avatar ceases to exist. So had Katara not had her special water (ie had she used it on Zuko) Aang would have died, the avatar would have stopped being a thing, and the fire nation would've won the war.

This season was the show’s Empire Strikes Back storyline. Azula is one of TV’s top 5 villains!

Remember the start of the seas when the Earth general tried to get him to master the avatar state? Roku explained if Aang was killed in the avatar state he would lose his connection to past avatars and break the cycle. I think that's why the giant avatar fell, Aang's life was in serious danger after getting shot and the process was starting.

Remember these words for the Book 3 finale. Stop reading to avoid spoilers "The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light."

Also for the people who dont know. Azula did kill aang with lightning but aang was brought back to life by kataras spirit water. Think about it like you being dead and someone is doing cpr on you then you come back, you were technically dead.

Even though Azula says the Earth King and the five generals must be taken out simultaneously, Sokka and Toph reach the Earth King after seeing the coup take place, meaning that the coup was not at the same time, as the Earth King was taken much later than the five generals. Katara uses the octopus fighting form in battle for the first time. Zuko mentions his mother to someone for the first time in the series.

During Katara and Azula's fight, after Katara entangles Azula's arm and leg, Zuko saves his sister with the same firebending move she performs in the opening credits.

Azula had success, where even the greates generals in the history of the fire nation failed. To conquer the Capital of the Earth Kingdom. A 14 year old girl had success, where the most experienced and glorified generals failed.
