WARNING: In a week or two, all your plants will be cut in half. It happens every night. Anubias, Java ferns, etc. all will be shred by those crayfish. I had them before and they are notorious plant cutter.

The tank looks great, man. I wouldn't have gone with crayfish with shrimps for predation but you have some nice species there. We used to sell loads on the marbled hatchetfish when I had the shop but could never get such vibrant blue shrimps. The first few batches we had were awesome then quality decreased to the point where they couldn't be described as 'blue' at all. When the bamboo / wood shrimp feed it is a glorious sight.

CPOs are great, if you've never kept them I think you'll soon find them amusing and fulfilling to keep! They act big and tough like their larger cousins, but generally they're peaceful. Interesting to see the female go straight for a shrimp. I assume the shrimp was sluggish (or sick) from being added, because CPOs really don't have a high predatory drive from what I've observed (mine is more of a vegetarian preferring algae wafers and you'll find it argued that as they age that should be the bulk of their diet).

RSS Aquatics How big do they get? Are these full size?
@rssaquatics9952
@rssaquatics9952 7 жыл бұрын
At most I'd say 3.5 inches, usually they top out at around 1.5 to 2 inches according to most sources. My current one is probably about 1.25 inches, and it's about a year old. The ones in this video I'd consider large, adults nearing their last couple of years (based on their size). They are not full size, hence the common name Mexican Dwarf Crayfish/Orange Dwarf Crayfish. If you're interested in getting one I'd make sure to get it from a reliable source, lots of places sell "Dwarf crayfish" that are actually just baby versions of what will eventually be a large predatory crayfish.

Because the velvet blue shrimp and 'fire red' cherry shrimp are of the same species, they will interbreed. Eventually there will be quite a few wild type colored shrimp. Do you plan on significant culling? I probably skipped a section where you talked about that. :)

@jeanfeel1946

Actually no it'll just make transparent-pale shrimps (which is closer to the wild form). The interbreeding and genetics of Davidis is well known and because the Blue type are from another lineage it'll make clear shrimps. Personnally, I tested Sakura black x Sakura Red and it was the result as well. I noticed also than the females Sakura Red like best the black males and produce very low quantities of Red babies once the 2 populations were mixed.

Gordon Hu I've experienced interbreeding myself, with a red wag swordtail and a golden panda molly. I wasn't planning on it but they breeded and I got some baby hybrids in my tank.

Shrimp are super sensitive to water parameters. My first batch I floated for 30 minutes...7 of 10 died. Lucky me I got them from petco and I returned them all...but I learned a lesson. The second and third batch I added....drip acclimated for 2-3 hours...not a single death.

spaceboyxyz that's not exactly how it works - if he keeps culling and pulling certain "undesirable" shrimp then they will continue to interbreed and keep their colours ( though rillis and the such will be more common) only if you're lazy on your culling will they go back to their "wild" colourations
