MY AVATAR PLAYLIST: • Avatar: The Last Airbe...
The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

It is funny to realize that firebenders is much weaker then others: Aang can blow away any fire by sneezing; waterbanders also stronger (but at the same time their power depends on amount of water they can use, what is also weakness); earthbenders, in many ways, are the strongest and firebanders can do nothing to ten tons boulder as well. And what they do to conquer literally whole world? They create a society based on discipline, honor, war and power also using the most advanced technologies and weapons. And it's funny because our antagonists was the weakest of all nations, but surpassed their limits by hard working and becomenig the most badass agressors in the world. What could do other tribes with such determination?

The "fire grandpa"s name is Iroh, he's Zuko's uncle and an absolute fan favorite, everyone loves Uncle Iroh ^^ I love the scene where he explains how firebending comes from your breath, not your muscles, it's such a wonderful explanation that gives bending in general a more logical and grounded feeling to it rather than just being "magic", it's a really great early moment of establishing the rules of how this world works

I think we could equate it to a form of psychic attunement to their aligned element. Psychokinesis= Air Hydrokinesis= Water Pyrokinesis= Fire Geokinesis= Earth Edit: I would have put Telekinesis for Earth, but I think it's a bit more complex than just that. Plus, Geokinesis sounds way cooler.

If you pay attention to the villagers, because all of the able-body men went off to war, all the other men in the village are either elders or kids. Sokka's sorta the "man of the village" now, so he considers it his responsibility to teach the kids how to be Water Tribe warriors. It's not that he expects kids to fight as much as he's trying to teach them to survive. In my opinion, it's also likely that his sexist tendencies are primaarily because he's a male teenager surrounded by kids, grandparents, and women.
@matityaloran9157

Based on the Northern Tribe, I suspected that Sokka’s sexist tendencies are partly due to that being the Water Tribe culture

What’s so sexist about knowing that men are physically stronger than women? Of course katara is a water bender which automatically makes her stronger than sokka of course though. But I mean as far as normal physical body strength goes
@lilscenechick1995
@lilscenechick1995 2 жыл бұрын
@@saklee1777 Because women are still capable of doing things men can do. It's ridiculous to *assume* a woman can't do something just because she's a woman. (I.e. any traditionally male role or male dominated field). Sokka assumed the Kiyoshi Warriors were men, and didn't respect them as capable fighters until he experienced their skills first hand. I'm not going to get into a heated gender debate, but it's funny your question was basically "what's sexist about [insert outdated sexist logic here]". Being physically stronger doesn't compensate for lack of skill.
@Klffsj
@Klffsj 2 жыл бұрын
@@saklee1777 It's not necessarily that Sokka regards men as being physically stronger; it's that Sokka regards women as being generally less. Sokka doesn't understand the difficulty or nature of the skills that the women possess, that he and other men aren't so good at. Furthermore, he grew up in a time where men and women had different roles, so he probably wants things to return to how they were in the good times: when men and women had different roles and responsibilities, when other men were around, when his dad was around. To him, letting women do men's work is like letting go of that golden past and the hope of restoring it. All around, this was a great character flaw to give him, as it's a very understandable flaw, given his circumstances; it's a flaw that's very relatable in that most people have at least seen some form of sexism; and it juxtaposes Aang's strong respect for alternate cultures and ways of life. This allowed Sokka to have some excellent yet subtle character growth throughout the first season, leading up to the moment where he saw a young woman bravely sacrifice her life to save many in the Season 1 finale-a warrior's death. Also, Katara isn't physically stronger than Sokka. She's strong, but he always had a little more muscle. He would beat her in an arm wrestling contest for sure. But, Katara (for most of the show) is certainly more powerful than Sokka, because of her water bending.

Just a bit of useful information (spoiler free). Most of this isn't super important, but it's nice to know. First the ages of the characters: Aang is 12, although he was born 112 years ago, Katara is 14, Sokka 15 and Zuko 16. Then something about the bending and elements. Each element's fighting style, is actually based on real martial arts, which is why they look so good and "realistic". You can look up which martial arts they're based on if you're interested. Second, the elements don't counter each other. Water doesn't beat fire, they're all four about equal, although they are used in very different and creative ways, which you will see. Just to clear this up, since I've seen a lot of reactors get confused about this, the ability to bend is something you're born with, and benders are actually quite rare. You might also have noticed, that firebenders create fire, while water-, earth- and airbenders can only use existing water, earth and air, althought air is everywhere.

One thing you will learn very quickly about this show is the emphasis of improving your own bending by using techniques from other elements. Irohs speech about breath comes from airbending, as demonstrated by how Aang breaks free from the Fire nation guards.
@needyverse

After a century without airbenders, most people aren’t prepared to battle one - practically no one has had any experience against them, and even when the Air Nomads were alive, their culture was one of peace (if you noticed Zuko mentioned Aang was raised by monks). A lot of the airbender skillset was based in defensive or meditative maneuvers (or plain fun). Teamed with Aang’s youth, playfulness and humour, many people struggle to understand that mindset. For example, Zuko is very well-trained for battle but he’s never fought an airbender, plus Aang isn’t interested in directly fighting, so a lot of Zuko’s approach doesn’t apply well yet. Aang also isn’t fighting to necessarily win or cause pain, which is alien to many people after a century of the world being ruled in a brutal military fashion.

I remember anxiously waiting for the next new episode of ATLA every week. I loved this show and only now as an adult do I get the depth of the characters and the story.

5:08, well, yeah. If I had to guess I would say it’s because it’s easier to associate the element of Fire with the imagery of Hell and the Devil than it is to do so with other elements.

You definitely in for a treat man, this show is great with it's story, lore, music, and character development. While it can be light-hearted as it is a show made for kids, they certainty ain't afraid to show things turn dark. Also, though I'm mostly joking, it may be best to not called this show an anime as some folks may get mad, I know I learned my lesson.

This entire series is a masterpiece, but there are a couple of episodes that are just next level. Season (book) 2, episode 15 "Tales of Ba Sing Se" is probably the best, and has some of the most emotionally touching moments of any show. . . ever.

20:30, Sokka’s right that Aang did that but he’s wrong to think that Aang did that on purpose but he’s right about the impact it’s likely to have. So given the circumstances the fact that Sokka banishes Aang for this actually does make sense

You’re google to have so much fun! I also really appreciate that you take notes when you watch TV shows. If you need recommendations, I highly recommend Maya and the Three, which is a mini series on Netflix that takes place in an Aztec inspired world. Also The Book of Life, which is a delightful movie made by the creator of Maya and the Three (Jorge R. Gutierrez).
